Lots of progress...changeover for hay is fairly involved, but for the acres you have to do...time well spent. Nice view of the Fall Foliage during your move to the last field of silage corn. Quite a crew of "tire pitchers" LOL
Farming is expensive. To be fair, that chopper costs a fortune to buy,run and maintain. But look at the work it does and tonnage of feed it has chopped. Credit due to Andy Hourighan, he knows it, runs it, maintains and repairs it. Well done on another fine video!
Greetings Andy! The man, the legend, ultra-farmer, ultra-farm equipment tech, ultra-family man! This one had a bit of everything. I enjoyed it immensely! You all take care!
Congratulations on a successful corn harvest. 🌽 Glad to see everything working well and all your helpers healthy and happy. It never get old watching you switch up machinery. Got yourself a camera guy now, nice! Lol. You're the only other guy I know that goes through stuff like I do. When Jered came in and said all the hydraulic oil was out of the 8120 and the tractor was in the middle of the road… That's what I get, someone walks in the shop or calls me but it's never to say how awesome things are going
Quite the impressive operation you have to chop and fill those bunks. Appreciated going along with you to watch again. Enjoyed it all. tks Taking that long spout off looks like a great place to rip a hand open. Hope that doesn't happen.
Idea for future video maybe some of the old dairy barns on your farms . The years built or near as you can guess and the changes that came along in the area. Can you imagine when some of these barns and silos were new the happiness it brought to the farmer and his family. Good Luck Andy from NE IOWA
@@rickburns8492 you are so right Andy and his family are good people one of those videos come out and some nut would cause them all kind of problems and the stuff they go threw on a daily basis they sure don’t need something like that even though you know and I know them cows are taking very great care of I’d say them cows live better and treated better than most humans
The worst part of doing silage I love mowing and raking but hate covering a pit. The wind always picks up aswel, soon as the sheet comes out! Lol glad all went well for u guys!
Awesome video Andy. Corn silage seems like it went by fast this year, maybe not for you I don't know. Hopefully you guys make short work of the hay then onto the combine and before you know it it'll be shop videos. Take it easy man. Just the tip
Not a farmer here...but before plastic was available to cover silage bunkers, were they covered with anything or just left open to the weather elements?
We need a new music video....with all the rocks this year......Rolling Stones..... in-between a rock and a hard place! Or one of my favorites TOOL H. For Haying Harvesting and Having fun!!!
I saw you guys covering the small bunk(s) today when I delivered cm..... I see now how heavy that kickout bucket is from using it last week to push up the cm before unloading.
Couple of questions about the Bunker Silos. 1. Instead if having to use the plastic and tires to cover the silage in the Bunker silos; have you checked out the bunker silos that have roofs installed on them ? Some are fixed to the bunker silo. One company makes removable roofs that look a lot like half round green house roofs. Seems like it would save a lot of time and work, if something like that could be installed on the Bunker Silos. 2. Do you know what the % spoilage is in a Bunker Silo, compared to the upright silos ?
Enjoyed the video. Almost worth having 2 choppers with all that you have to do to convert back to hay. Are all brands of choppers like that to go from hay to corn and back?
Hopefully they have come up with a easier way quicker way to switch from corn to Haylage. The kernel processor and switching the snout is unreal. Admire you Continually switching
I thought the girls were wearing light colored clothes when they started, but after they were in black... Lol, tires are a hated thing to deal with on a silage pile, but a necessary evil. Great video again!
Hi Andy watch this video DIY Tire Cutting Machine you could make a better one also I have an idea on a tarp roll up system without the need of tires or sand Bage's and a one-man operation and reusable for year's would save a lot of cash money and we could sell it to other's a one-of-a-kind system. Hope to hear back from you Phil
when u were headed to jump off the tire, I said 2 myself ... "he's gonna jump off that tire & my knees are hurting just thinking bout that" ... when u did jump, I heard u grunt ... I Feel Ur Pain 😔
I'm wondering if anyone does anything about the grit and gravel that gets tracked up on the silage pile frrom vehicles running back and forth from roadways? Seems like nobody is the least bit OCD about it. Cows with cracked or broken teeth wouldn't be very productive.' Would steel cleated dozers find a place as packers? They pack dirt pretty good! The vibration. Asphalt rollers have vibrators built into them for better packing. Just always curious.
the 10th generation dairyman used a sheep's foot roller last year. They went back to tractor packing this year because a tractor does a better job for them. I don't know, I'm just passing along what he said.
I really enjoy your video's , wondering if we could see the milking process .. I live in west branch Michigan , a lot of farmers are selling their milk cows here . really sad . god bless you and your family

Great variety today. Even got to see some bunk packing. Very enjoyable.
the feed production is just awe inspiring.
Congrats on getting chopping done for the year

Love your videos Andy
Thanks Andy
That was one good day Andy! Really enjoyed it!
As we used to say "Keep cutting" Andy, Spot on as usual. Catch the next.
I'm amazed how much you get done while you video

It’s a process with many steps…. Good job
Great video, all that help got me to thinking how do you guys go about time off for such a crew?
Nice to see Nate get some air time on the bunk. All the guys in the field get all the camera time and poor Nate is forgot about 😄
Not a farmer here...but before plastic was available to cover silage bunkers, were they covered with anything or just left open to the weather elements?
Way way back in the day in my area anyway it was more popular to put the Feed up in a wooden or cement silo sometimes even wooden bunks under cover
Some guys didn’t cover the pile
Class machinery and video

Seals out oxygen to allow fermentation, otherwise you get a lot of rot on the top.
Thats a good idea cutting tires in half
Have you looked into buying a tire cutting machine? Our local tire place has one, so he can get more tires into his semi trailers to haul off.
You surely chop alot of corn and hay I can't imagine how many tons
Do you tack any hi monster corn to the elevator or do you keep it all. Stay safe and keep the videos coming cheers.
Not sure if i asked you this before . How often do you Re bearing Kernel Processor ? I know we did the one were i use to work ever other year .
Every 2 years
Enjoyed the video. Almost worth having 2 choppers with all that you have to do to convert back to hay. Are all brands of choppers like that to go from hay to corn and back?
For $700,000 that would be a hard sell.
Yeah
Do you have any idea of how many tons of silage you have on hand?
Yes he does,
Yeah
Upon Rose Hill in Marietta
Hey Andy. How's it going with The Jack of All Trades & The Master of None?
Hopefully they have come up with a easier way quicker way to switch from corn to Haylage. The kernel processor and switching the snout is unreal. Admire you Continually switching
Changing the kernel processor is easy compared to the old way where the knife drum had to be removed.
MrPaw45-yes indeed
Hey Andy, where are those adorable daughters of yours today I sure like to see them in the video. They are so cute.
Curious if a 3 point sheep foot roller would help pack on the 8r tractor? Never done silage so just asking
Tires are good enough
What do you do with the old bolts that you remove from the knives? Do you use it for different projects or throw them away?
Throw them in the scrap barrel
No more Giants hangin out there?
Hope y'all had a good weekend.
Looks like you filled the high moisture bunk with corn silage, where is the high moisture corn going now
Andy, are you concerned that the alfalfa you are cutting fit this last cutting will have winter kill or are these fields going into corn next year?
Some of them going into corn and the other we’ll just have to wait and see
I thought the girls were wearing light colored clothes when they started, but after they were in black... Lol, tires are a hated thing to deal with on a silage pile, but a necessary evil. Great video again!
Lunch and watch!
We like them!! so far!!
What was the first self propelled chopper the farm purchased? How many employees does the farm have and how many are family?
John Deere 6750
Is there a difference between corn and hay knives
Yes

I'm exhausted just watching the switch from corn to grass.
Andy about how many cows those it take to eat all the feed you harvest each year?
He mentioned in a recent video that they milk just over 1700 cows. He didn't say how many they have that aren't being milked at any given time.
About 3500 on feed that that chopper has cut
Andy do you pretty much use all of your bunks every year or do you have stuff that is over a year old
Yes
New to this channel Is that crane standard on that type of machinery Sorry for my ignorance on this matter thank you
On this series yes
How many hours did you put on that chopper this year between alfalfa and corn Andy?
Over 600
How many total tons of feed of all types do you guys put up? It amazes me how good a job you do.
70-80,000 tons

There isn’t any gravel or dirt getting into the feed
How many hours are on the chopper and corn head?
3000 on chopper
Andyn You must use a lot of fuel just going from field to field.
Where’s the high moisture corn going this year?
In the silo
You filled your high moisture bunk with corn silage! Where are gonna put your high moisture corn now? Bags
He said in silos in a previous video.
Did you order a new harvester for next year?
No
The tire you put on your bunks do you have to buy them tires from somewhere how much they charge you for
The cut tires we have to buy
Hey Andy, do you have any farmers around your area that grow sweet corn?
Yes
@@FarmingFixingFabricating have you yourself tried to grow sweet corn with any success you know as an experiment to see if I can be profitable?

Just the upright this year
