      He reviews obscure games and has weird thumbnails. The results aren't a big surprise.

    • @EggBastion
      @EggBastion 4 роки тому +5

      "weird thumbnails" - Weird? In that they're tasteful? Accurately and faithfully represent the content of the video? Are constructively branded and not a complete fucking eyesore? Or are they 'weird just because they don't have a gurning idiot mugging confusion and horror at something so poorly shot and/or framed that you wouldn't even -know- _be able to guess_ what the subject of the video was if it wasn't highlighted with a big red circle and arrow _and_ all too clearly spelled out in the ALL CAPS title along with "YUO WONT BELEEVE" "OMG" "3AM" GONE WRONG"
      I don't really get the impression you're using 'weird' as underhanded way of saying 'crap' but I don't see what's 'weird' about them either... Maybe I'm just losing touch

    I think the gameplay works as part of the horror due to the main theme of the game being that of violence and how we express it. Whether as a means of discovery(killjoy), a craft to perfect (hermes),or just this burst of emotion we can’t rightly explain why we did so (Horace). Torque (the player ) by fighting his way through this menagerie of brutality he finds his own conclusion to what violence can be and how he personally uses it. That’s just the way I’ve come to see it of course and one can argue that spec ops the line may have done this better but I admittedly have not played it but nonetheless to each their own

    I know that the spoilers issue has been discussed earlier but I for one would love you to go over the stories of games in more detail. Since you mostly review old games, there are people who have played them already or I'm guessing there are also quite a lot of people like me. I'm never going to play any of these older adventure games that I haven't already played back in the day but I'd love to know more of the story than just the basics. Of course I could go on and read about it myself but then I would be missing out on your take on the matter. Anyway, top content, keep it grim.

I remember I played on normal, *never died* during Suffering 1 and was terrified I was like playing an Iron Man version of the game, given I had no ideea how the respawn system works. Dunno why that train of throught crossed my mind though.

    I still like the first game. Has a lot of little secrets and quite a bit to explore.
    Usually the levels were sometimes only gave you one of two alternatives, but the level design and geography were real well done. Everything looped and met back at the prison and branched towards the camp and the east side of the island. I thought that was the game's strongest aspect.
    Sure, it's a dated game by now, but it made me go back to it again. A lot of small details, like sergei's secret stash and cannabis farm hidden in the woods a 'live and let live' sign and Killjoy's many patients laying around the property. There's way more, but I bet 90 percent of people that played the game missed them.
    I think the sequel tried to address some of the issues by adding a two weapon limit and not letting you hold painkillers. Honestly, the most entertaining oarts of that game wwre the two killers; they just chewed the scenery so well.

    • @Lucifronz
      @Lucifronz Рік тому

      I honestly feel like this game, like most of Midway's titles, is just fun to play. They always nail the gameplay on some level. Even if you don't feel it's revolutionary, it's never boring and that's important.
      But like you said, it has a lot of small details that builds it up, which in my opinion is it's strongest aspect. The game really builds up Carnate Island's history and the spirit system is an effective way to tell you these stories instead of just relying on notes (though it has plenty of those too, often making the scenes redundant, but it can help provide clearer context on what you saw in the scenes, with the scenes adding more emotional depth to it by letting you see how everyone was affected and how they reacted, like the miners who were left to starve/suffocate in the mines by the guards).
      As far as personal story goes, it's nothing exceptional. It's a basic plot in that regard, but it works because Torque isn't the only character. Nor are the island's residents, living or dead. The whole island's a character and it's a good one.

    Aaand I just found two new music artists to get into. Very cool.
    It's a game that wants to be survival horror and also wants to be an action power fantasy, where the main character is an unbeatable badass who turns into an even more unstoppable killing machine when in any danger. These two concepts just cannot co-exist.
    Bloodyrayne, for all its faults, understood the action-horror genre it was working in. The Suffering is effectively in the same genre as Bloodrayne but doesn't understand that.

  • @chillhour6155
    @chillhour6155 4 роки тому

    This game for me really is more then a sum of it's parts with lost potential, there's a lore/story behind this game somewhere that wasn't fully realized, evertime I play it it impresses in it's confidence in it's game design and knowing what it wants to be, but it needed more time, also of the many times that I've played it strangley enough I never drew comparisons to it and other popular horror games, it just always felt like for me that it was a mid tier game doing its own thing with a slightly too strict a budget and time frame to be fully realized
    Wish we had !ore of these brave and confident efforts in videogame development these days

    the weird foetus with bulging eyes that sometimes shows up midway through the game as one of Torque's visions is genuinely disturbing.

    To be honest, I actually like the idea of horror themed action game. The Suffering for me faltered in that it didn't really seemed to commit to the idea. Horror atmosphere was there, but it somehow lacked the impact, and the action was okay, but it lacked punchiness. In my opinion, making ammo less abundant, monsters more dangerous and having more of the ideas like with the light and slayers, it could have worked really well. The way it is, it is decent enough game, enjoyable, arguably somewhat original. I would really love to have the ideas in this given a reboot with a more clear vision (closest I can think of would be gory and less phantastical Remnant, for example, with a more of a focus on story).
    Also, love your channel, let the goth gamer nation prevail :D !

    I loved RE: Outbreak, even though it wasn't until over a decade and a modified Japanese ROM later that I was able to play it online (even solo it's fun), Obscure 2 was one of my earliest and most enjoyed horror experiences, and Silent Hill 4: The Room is the only Silent Hill game I've ever personally played and I loved it. Granted, all of these I was able to play with my sibling. Even Silent Hill 4, just... you know... not real coop.
    Technically every source online says that Outbreak did not have same-system coop, but my memories say it happened and I've learned from a recent election that how I feel matters more than the obvious facts, so I'm gonna stick with believing it until I can come up with a better opinion to save face.
    But really, I loved those games, and I loved The Suffering, as well. I even replayed it not too far back by modifying the PC controls to work with a controller so I didn't have to rely on the really outdated Xbox version (or play with mouse + keyboard, because I don't play third-person games that way now shush, eat your breakfast). I'm not really the main target for horror games, though. I love a good story and I love coop games or games with AI partners. Fear is not my goal with horror. I like a little bit of it, but most have boring bland unimaginative gameplay and near-constant tension, often caused by enemies that just instakill you, which is as frustrating as it is tense. So big shocker I loved all of these more forgiving games. Sucks that more people didn't, but I'd argue that just because they didn't do well commercially they're still all pretty well-received games after the fact. I rarely hear anyone complain about Silent Hill 4, but then again I'd just plug my ears the moment I thought the conversation was turning negative, so... yeah. Suck it, whiners.

    7:30 “You buy this for the scare and atmosphere factor which cannot be beat!” Tell that to DUSK, Soma and Fran Bow. Especially the former on Duskmare difficulty or Cero Miedo when the 1 hit kill rule of Duskmare gets annoying.

    I've been binging your content and have yet to comment but I just wanted to say I've enjoyed all your reviews, while having my disagreements I can appreciate your take. I do have to question why exactly you avoided using the transformation mechanic, if for no other reason because you didn't see it as "necessary"? I mean I personally don't find playing games to be a necessity but simply as a thing I want to do and so generally if I find a game mechanic fun I'd use it despite potentially having a conventionaly simpler way of achieving a similar result. Just curious, great review.

    Oh my, play it on Hard. You ll be left with less ammo, rage mode is pretty much mandatory if you want to progress, same with grenades.

      I play this game on Impossible myself. A much better experience in my opinion, because enemies have a higher damage tolerance and do way more damage to the player. This combined with the overall tone of the game makes gameplay feel 10x more intense.

  • @Lucifronz

    Though I don't agree overall with your assessment of the plot or tone, I will say that I played this game once or twice when I was a kid. This was back when I could barely handle horror. It was a little difficult to get past my hesitation, but I *did* complete the game more than once back then.
    So while I don't feel it was a disappointment at all, if you're looking for "scares", this game doesn't really have it unless you're a 4-year-old. There are certainly some scary moments, the whole game has a great horror *atmosphere,* but it rarely consistently scares you. I think it's best to look at this more as a action title with horror as its set-dressing. It deals with brutal themes and you're not really playing a hero, but you can redeem yourself or damn yourself accordingly, and the setting is a really fun one to play around in. I mean seriously, how many great story titles have you busting out of prison? Like as part of the plot, not backstory bullshit like that one (of many) trash Silent Hill game(s). Even less that have monsters getting in your way.
    I would argue that where the plot of the character is simplified, the character of the island and its history is *rich* to make up for it. Carnate Island has a dark past that the game is constantly trying to show you and it's not to scare you, that's the wrong way to look at it, it's to immerse you in the setting. I wish more games would put that kind of focus on the world. It may be why I liked Silent Hill 4 so much. All of the places you go to have some sort of significance to the main antagonist and you will learn about them and their history. There may be exceptions, but I'm pretty sure they all matter.
    I can't play a horror game that doesn't have either great gameplay or a great story. I can't even watch a horror game that doesn't have something going on with the latter. I want to be intrigued. Carnate Island intrigues me. Torque's story isn't unimportant, it's the driving force of the game and your interactions with the people you encounter (ghostly or otherwise), but it's intentionally put to the side of the immersion of the setting. It comes up only as much as it needs to in order to satisfy your immersion and give you some choices to make. That's entirely fine by me. What would have sucked is if there were *nothing* to make up for Torque's simple story, which is what so many action titles fail to do: give you something to balance it out.
    But that's just me. I've wanted to play the sequel for a long time, ever since I learned about it. Never knew it even existed as a kid, so I couldn't exactly support the developers with a sale. I've had no luck getting it to run on PC, either, though I haven't tried very recently with my totally different hardware and experience.

    ...why would you use the meelee weapons?
    because firstly, when you're a 16year old noob for whom this is the first third person shooter ever, you run out of ammo quite a lot.
    and secondly, and MAINLY, learning to reliably kill burrowers just with the shiv is SO. INCREDIBLY. SATISFYING. and the learning process itself is SO. INCREDIBLY. SATISFYINGLY. SCARY.
    EDIT: The sound bug where weapons and enemies go silent for some time also ocurred in the original CD version (or at least the "Prison is hell" edition, which I'm not sure how it differs from the one without the subtitle)

    It's a sweet little action thriller. I never realized that people can actually perceive it as a horror game, lol.
    Oh, by the way, have you played Ecstatica? People tend to laugh at the way it looks, but I find it one of the most atmospheric horror games ever made. The combination of somewhat lighthearted visuals and deeply sinister undertones is really a strong mix in my eyes.
