The total SUV vs Sedan debate is wrong. It is too idealistic. I think the confidence argument you guys made is not right. And I have seen too many sedan owners hogging the lane and driving rashly on populated roads than the so called SUV drivers. Although manufacturers are claiming every thing to be SUV, customers are I believe smarter than that. They are not buying them because the manufacturer called it SUV, but they found other benefits with these raised crossovers. Those points are not covered enough in that debate. Why is choosing comfort equals to lack of confidence?

"Most" influencers are grifters....plain and simple. All they care about is money and followers.... EVERYTHING else be damned. Most are morally bankrupt and don't give a duck about being polite and nice.....they very well know how to create click bait headlines and thumbnails. That should give 1 enough info about what they really are. These 2 guys are more mature, well rounded and seem to have a conscience.

9:35 Completely agree with you guys on this!! I recently took back to back test drive of Elevate and City. I thought the bigger wheels would help the Elevate over the bad roads. But to my surprise, it was City that felt more plush and comfortable. City is one of those gem of a car that offers great handling for the ride quality it has. Elevate has great suspension for the segment but I think none of the crossovers in the segment can actually offer the ride and handling balance of a traditional sedan.
Suvs has more stiff suspension to reduce body roll cause they are tall boy design whereas sedan are low that's why not much issue of roll over that's why you see soft suspension in sedan.
Spot on, I was ignoring City until last minute and was fixated on Virtus/Slavia/Seltos since I already drive a Jazz .... Thought why not check out.... I just took delivery last week despite wanting a different brand this time, prime reason being plush interior, comfort and known reliability of Honda. Also, the sound of iVtec.

You gotta drive slow and carefully... I didn't take that road on the way back and I wouldn't in a Creta as well... Only in Thar... Why buy smaller Venues/Nexons for the price of 1.5 City.... Just returned from Bangkok. Roads and traffic are not much better than a metro city here but the driving etiquette is far better than in India. People just follow their lanes, rules and care about other drivers, no honking. That makes all the difference. The country feels developed simply because of how they drive. Great video btw!!
@@remojoseph1985 their bikes makes a racket more than modified REs though. It’s so funny them zipping through traffic on a moped with crazy loud exhausts. I believe, they want to be heard by the cars and that’s one of the reason they do that. Heard= safer (my assumption)
Adding to the discussions on the topic, I feel that as motorists, and enthusiasts, majority of us are yet to realize, understand and accept that vehicles are very individualitisc & intimate experience, whether 2 wheels or 4. Its very seldom that while finalizing a car or a bike, we self introspect our capabilities and our must have experiences, rather the decisions are function of the HCFs and LCMs prevalent in this market. There is no better way of deciding on a vehicle than experiencing them ourselves. Take multiple test drives - even for the same model, check multiple dealers, plan different routes, take your back-seat elderlies & families for test drives, emulate your real world usage as much as possible in decision making phase itself. Question, research, test drives and feedbacks, these steps give us much better clarity as to what REALLY suits our needs from the vehicle, rather than the wants!

Like Shumi said, most of our parents aren't going to just 'set you free'. You have to sometimes be assertive about your decisions, regardless of your parents' opinion about it, especially if you are financially independent.
Can you guys make a dedicated video on how to take care and maintain our bikes and cars, like what are the do's and don'ts for brakes, paints, other moving parts of bikes/cars and everything else which are important and we should keep in mind always??? I guess maintaining our precious vehicles needs some very basic and intermediate skills and informations and you guys are the most trustworthy source for motoring knowledge in Indian space... Love what you guys have built and I hope this is just the beginning ;)
Disagree on the automatic opinion, I live in Bangalore where even a 5 km commute may take 30-60 minutes and after a day of work , an automatic is a god send for us to just get home
Yes, though i have been driving MT for years, but AT starts making sense for city drives. Also, though MT gives the actual drive pleasure, better overtakes and control, but AT does give comforts for a very long drive
About the manual vs automatic transmission part, I think it’s essential to learn with a MT, master it and then gradually move to any form of AT, especially in cases of disability or fear. These days we see people solely rely on automatics and fall in trouble thinking that the vehicle will do everything by itself‘ automatically’ hence causing potential problems for everyone around them. Also, MTs are difficult for young children to operate, thereby reducing the occurrences of underage driving (the internet is filled with videos of the opposite cases).
On the SUV vs Sedan conversation: I prefer driving a sedan or hatchback in the day time for really long drives for the comfort and confidence they offer. In the night drives I always prefer a high seat MPV or SUV just because of the lights from the vehicles in the opposite side. These LED projector headlamps falling in people with less road etiquettes is making driving in night literally a nightmare!
This is actually very relevant and probably could be a topic on This Connect, night time driving/ riding. I am 6 feet tall sitting on 845mm height himalayan and i find it a bad experience when the highway dividers are not far away and most indian drivers do not understand the concept of high beam and low beam.. especially the dark, unlit roads.
And to add to this - the overwhelming desire to install white lights (and not yellow), 100W bulbs, I mean proper attempts being made to blind the other person
Why don't more channels use the 'Episodes' tag feature (or whatever it's called)? I haven't seen this feature since at least five years ago until now on this channel. It's incredibly convenient to access the playlist this way. Honestly, many UA-cam channels seem clueless about how to organize their content, but this channel is exceptionally well-planned and structured. You guys have hired the right people. They do it because usually when people come across a random episode and it's say no. 4 for example they are less likely to watch it as thinking they have to watch other episodes first, while if its just a generic name they will at least click on the video
@@kallampraveen One big reason that channels do not mention the video/episode number on the thumbnail, I believe, is that they want you to keep searching through their videos, for the one video you once watched, so they get more "views" out of you than just on a single video by mentioning the episode number.
I20 n-line is the best handling car in our country right now. To get to the level of i20, if you have a polo, it would take a lot of money, and this is a factory car. Great choice

As a family of four with a Labrador, our only reason to go for a “suv” was it’s tougher to go on long trips with a dog in a sedan. I wish we had the option on estates in India!
A fully loaded average sedan and Bangalore speed breakers might be the real test for your driving skills. P.S I love sedan, it’s just that anything below 180 mm can’t be driven worry free in many cities in the country.

I am an amateur driver, my father owns an alto and that's what I've driven for 5-6 years. When I sat on my neighbour's nexon and my cousin's duster, the biggest trait I noticed was you can see more of the road and ahead of bonnet of the car and that gave me instant confidence. If adv's are more safer because you sit taller and can see farther, shouldn't it apply to SUVs also ?
Seeing more does not matter except on offroad. On driving looking further ahead is what matters. At the speeds we do under the bonnet is too late already.
The point is people are buying SUVs for the wrong reasons. Also the budget SUVs being sold are not real SUVs. The bigger wheels on a SUV do not automatically mean it will have a good ride quality. There are sedans which have even better ride quality and provide better stability and control on bad roads. Not to mention SUVs are generally more expensive and for that extra money you are not getting much.

Don't be scared to get something with a higher ground clearance. Being confident is also knowing to be confident of your short coming. Crossovers can give you the confidence you need as a new driver.

Regarding the Skill, I do not agree with Shumi this time.. 1. when you sit in the driver's seat the judgement made to stop keeping only 1 feet (30cm) from the front car, is that not a skill? 2. when you sit in the driver's seat, you have to make the correct judgement so that the diagonal end will not bump into another pedistrian, car, bike which is standing on the left side? 3. Parallel parking - is that not a skill? 4. 3 point turn is that not a skill? 5. reversing a car with or without a rear camera - is that not a skill? 6. driving a car in the night on a highway when the big volvos coming on to you with 6 headlights and still you survive, is that not a skill? 7. 8. 9 ... many more... I dont think we can compare the skill set of a driver and rider. Both are uniquie and may not be compared. However, if I mis understood your point, then I really apologize.

There's also lack of options. There aren't any D segment sedans anymore. All the RnD budget going towards crossovers means they're getting better while sedans are getting worse due to lack of RnD due to low sales. XUV 700 is probably the best value for money car specially the lower variants. There's no sedan that can compete with it. Big diesel engine, independent multi link suspension, space, comfort, ride quality, power, ease of ingress/egress. Wish we still had Civic, Octavia, Jetta, Elantra but even those were CKD so couldn't complete in value for money due to being so expensive.

I appreciate your podcasts a lot. One argument that resonated with me is people wanting bigger cars as a status symbol. This is so spot on. Its one big reason why Creta, Seltos and XYV700 or Scorpio sell a lot, even outside of big metro cities. Once someone owns a bigger car, they automatically think they are entitled to their own space on the road. This is also amplified by social media, pop culture where you see regular type people in movies, reels etc almost always own a Fortuner, Sumo, Thar etc. I am in the market for my very first car and would appreciate your advice. I have only driven a Swift Diesel till this point. I have two sedans at the top of my wish list, Slavia 1.0L/1.5L MT and Verna Turbo MT. I found the Verna Turbo to be much easier to drive because of the lesser clutch travel and the gear changes were so smooth, clutch was butter smooth to operate. VAG clutches on the other hand felt a lot more clunky. Also I found their clutch travel to be on the longer side and the biting point was in the last stages of the clutch travel. Because of this I also ended up stalling the engines on inclines and in stop and go traffic. The Slavia and the Kushaq were a bit of a pain to operate in stop and go traffic. As a first time car buyer, is the long clutch travel and the high biting point something that one gets used to ? My requirements are as much passive safety I can afford (5-star GNCAP rated) and I would be driving this in stop and go traffic a couple of days a week and would take it out on highways 2-3 times a month. Brother I would not suggest but request you to test drive City. Smoothness, Comfort, and reliability are unparalleled. Maybe lacking on features end compared to the competitors but it gets every feature you need and again lesser the electronics, lesser the chances of failure. Just test drive it once and reply your experience afterwards. Good luck with the purchase of a new car.

I usually drive to Northern Karnataka every other weekend . The hump’s in those areas are mini mountains. I have ford freestyle which has really good ground clearance still in some of the hump’s i need to be careful. So just for the ground clearance i hesitate. I understand now vw and skoda sedans have really good ground clearance but still when i used to drive the sedans by default my bump used to raise as soon as i see a hump coming 😂

Indian car audience has become a SUV lover, even if it is a pseudo SUV, in similar fashion India will become an ADV loving country with respect to two-wheelers. IMHO, India is not only following new trends but it is the need of the hour, potholes, road joints, age long construction, waterlogging and what not.
Along with unskilled I would also add distracted. See, on the roads I see a lot of distracted drivers(distracted by calls, talking to family members). They are more dangerous than the unskilled ones since they are more confident than the unskilled ones, while being unaware on the road.
Definitely don't like Tablet sized screens within the car. As such we're exposed to way too much screen time, I don't want more screens while I'm driving. The Maps thing is convenient, and for that I might give a concession. But otherwise, the lesser automated nonsense inside a car, lesser the headache acc to me.
Adding to the conversation about 5 star cars, I have noticed it on the roads and with some people I know end up spending more time on their phones while driving a car with adas. Just cause it will brake for them. It’s interesting how supportive tech gets misused. Worst part is this can’t get regulated, behavioural change is the only solution I suppose.

I know the fans are gonna hate for this : 1.I may be in the minority when I say "more people in India should get Automatic because after a stressful day in offices dealing the traffic is way more easier in AT" 2. Many buy the raised back hatchback for number of other reason so marking everyone as noob for driving one is a little too much. 3. I am with Kartik on prices seldom or shouldn't come down because the raw material price changes have very less to do with the actual cost also - case in point the jimmny where customer thrashed the dealers left and right once the prices where down.
Toyota claims to make only Rs 50k for each Fortuner sold (can’t wrap my head around that, but) will they ever resort to cutting prices even if all the sheet metal scrap from Ukraine makes raw materials dirt cheap??

hey Kartikeya , i am here for you man spokes wheels on modern classic bike like RE, Triumph, Moto Guzzi, Jawa, BSA, BMW R18 etc.. looks so much Cooler more appropriate and there are option in market to convert spoke wheels into tubeless like Outex tubeless kit, way to speed tubeless conversion kit etc.. The above mention modern classic are in a way life style choice if you want the old school look go for it if not that's okay too enjoy whatever you like man. We as a country need strict law on licensing for sure so that idiot with money don't have access to performance bikes it will just increase the chances of them getting injured and other people too . It took a year and a half for my family to convince me to take an SUV. Decided to go ahead with the fortuner (only SUV that drives the way I like) and now with this video, I am back to square one.
Had this wall breakdown moment with regards to royal Enfield thumpers. Had gone to a friend's wedding in Chennai, around 2018 or 2019 I think. Was an owner of the second gen Duke 390 then. And somehow automatically had a hate towards RE because I saw the ktm and re fans fighting over the net and decided to side with my colours. Young blood stupid head type of thing. Had a day to myself before my other friends reached. Was going through the internet trying to decide what to do for the day. All of a sudden just saw this recommendation from some person for this cafe in pondicherry that had this excellent coffee. And I decided that's what I'll do. Rent a bike, head over to pondicherry via the east coast road, have this coffee and come back. There's some situation in Tamil Nadu where rentals were an issue. So the rental I went to was kinda off paper thing. He had a decent selection of Indian bikes . Dukes, dominars and bullets. I had taken my own helmet, it was the HJC fg17. He asked if i ride a fast bike. I said I have a duke. He said you can rent a duke. I said no. I want something else. And just out of some craziness, said I want a cast iron bullet. He said okay. I paid, took the bike and left for pondicherry. And for such a long time I was trying to see it's performance. It just wouldnt go. I said what a waste. Had the coffee. It was meh. Thought the day is ruined. The city of pondicherry is gorgeous though. Has a charm of its own. So walked around a bit and my head calmed down. Went into a bit of sedated state. Amd it was time to go back. on my way back, as I was tired and was already in a calm state of mind, rode the bullet at a much more sedate 65-70 kph. And then everything fell in place. My bums were sore at the end of the day, yes. But that ride through the pleasant east coast road , genuinely thumping along, feeling the wind, was an eye opener. It still isn't my cup of tea. But whenever I go to Goa, I rent an old cast iron bullet once and roam around on that.

Team Motorinc - Excellent episode but for one point that you may have missed out on regarding the ground clearance. Most often ground clearance is not the prob but Approach Angle is. Approach angle for Sedans and Hatches are relatively lower than that of SUVs and couple of times I have had to take a hatch in reverse on an inclined path because of the low approach angle which would end up scrapping the front .
Another fantastic conversation. I, too, am bewildered by this SUV craze. I have been driving cars for the last 30 years and for most of my life they have been hatchbacks and sedans. The car that enjoyed the most was Ford Figo with 1.5 L diesel engine. It had fabulous handling and ground clearance was enough to clear most speedbreakers. I used to enjoy it more than my C Class which felt more ponderous although it was far more powerful. When I test drove a Landrover Evoque, I just found it incredibly top heavy. I could never see myself driving an SUV, ever. However, serious deterioration of road conditions in the next few years meant I had to go in for a SUV with better ground clearance. I hate that decision today but have to live with it. I extract no joy in piloting a ponderous vehicle. This conversation gives me the courage to go ahead and buy a sedan / hatchback again, while mentally preparing to be more careful while negotiating the roads.
34:55 motorcycles with automatic transmission are not motorcycles. They are scooters. And most motorcycle riders have a mindset that if you ride a scooter, you're not manly enough or that you don't know how to ride a real motorcycle. Yeah. We're pretty conservative.

"As an Automotive Engineer, I appreciate how well this video highlights the fundamental principle of Form follows Function (Need vs. Want). Although I am highly inclined towards Sedans, choosing between an SUV and a sedan becomes challenging when considering a car for exploring India's beautiful landscapes. The first 50 minutes of the video convinced me that I don't need an SUV, but the point about 'ADV being best suited for Indian roads in the current situation', has me rethinking the sedan vs. SUV debate(* Especially for our country). Yes, let me compare it better. Is a person buying ktm adventure/xpulse/himalayan and attaching 50 extra fog lights and removing silencer, are they putting on a show or following their passion. Counter intuitively, if someone buys Lamborghini Urus or Mercedes G Wagon, are they putting on a show or following their passion? 90% of the time, any suv owner like fortuner, uses it to pick up their kids from school and go to malls, they have only touched dirt if the roads weren't repaired.
The skill a driver needs to have is also getting removed more and this is also coming to motorcycles as well. Automatic transmission. I love how safety and needs comes into the same picture when you talk about SUV vs Sedans. I totally agree, we as drivers/riders are not very inclined to learn the skill of driving a manual anymore because of the hassle of driving thru a traffic is more than a hassle. It has become a integral part of our journey. Driving a manual pushed you to have all the awareness you might need to drive on the road but now the scope of being a better driver has also decreased because of the automatic transmission. The older generation are still able to drive at ages above 60 because of the constantly honed skills of driving a manual and hence they know what speeds does a car can complete a turn and how deep you need to go but I don’t think so a guy/girl from our generation can drive that well(maybe not even drive due to AI) at all. And this concern is now coming to motorcycle as well. This concern of not having to shift gears on time and making your brain concentrate rightly on them will free you brain to be filled up stuff like stress about work, life and all hence taking away the point of riding a bike- to have that feeling that the faster you go, the further away you are from your problems. The deeper you go in the jungle, or higher the mountain it is, the harder is for your problems to find you.
You guys are doing the best if the stuff for me at least. I can easily correlate with what you guys did with the last pages of editions you worked on. Me and my younger brother had it by heart. And we vouched the data you shared there. This whole conversation was soothing and very responsible. I mean, for riders, society and provides lot for the administration to thing, (I know they will not). Thank you for bringing me back into right mood. Such as front-back breaks, clutch and gear shifter. - suspension sag, damping In cars: Seat position, steering wheel angle and reach. For a given user's parameters such as height, weight and usage scenario. Coming from a cycling background I know that bikefit can dramatically change the comfort level.

Not for me, I am from Hinachal and have very very tough roads, I am so much in love with Skoda Slaviq and Honda City, I crave so much to buy either but I will have to go for Kushaq, Elevate or maybe Skylaq.
Lovely podcast. Thank you both of you! Wanted to point out that you missed out on one aspect of why many elders are opting for SUVs nowadays - easier ingress/egress. I have seen how some elders who struggled getting in and out of sedans/hatchbacks are so much at ease after switching to an SUV. And with bikes, there is one big wall everyone seems to have - number of cylinders!

There were several moments during the podcast, where I was nodding vigorously, agreeing to what either of you said (Sedans make more sense and yes, we need much better driving license mechanism) I see many parents riding with their kids, in the wrong way and I instantly know, they are adding another idiotic rider to the road (their kid in the future). And, we lack terribly on Patience when it comes to the road.

Another angle to it is the fast paced life, which demands you to move fast, meet deadlines and just crawl up the ladder. Who has every rejoiced in it? In the end all one seems to seek is the enjoyment in the journey, which seems to be missing in a larger lot of people, since they have just experienced money. Oh boy! Tubes being used as rubber bands is exactly what we do in our home! We use the tubes as rubber strips to tie down things & one the places where the tube rubber strips shine is connecting the water pipe to the tap. Believe me we've used metal screw type collars for the same purpose but the rubber strips hold on the tap so tightly that it's a bit of a hardwork to untie them once the work is done!😅😅 My dad was the 1st person to introduce us the rubber strips cut from the tubes & we were like, why go through the mess of cutting & opening old tubes & trust me, now that we've seen what there're capable of, we don't what anything else to tie down stuff other then the rubber strips!
Quite a few things in this episode that made me smile, laugh, or reflect. I had one incident on my motorcycle many, many years ago where the rear tyre burst because of excess air and a hot summer - I was lucky. About Pink Floyd, I was asking myself which album was released in the late 90s when The Division Bell was released in '94. And then Schumi mentioned Division Bell! It is such an underrated album and I think this is the first time I have heard someone else mention it!
I rode the Jawa 42 for almost a year and half. It was a great ride as I had only ridden 125cc bikes before. Then the Jawa started its thing, being a complete pain in the head. I switched to a Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX last month, and I'm happy with the bike as I selected it after much research. So Shumi's point is spot on that you do learn from your mistakes, and ultimately you have to learn to think for yourself and choose accordingly.

The total SUV vs Sedan debate is wrong. It is too idealistic. I think the confidence argument you guys made is not right. And I have seen too many sedan owners hogging the lane and driving rashly on populated roads than the so called SUV drivers. Although manufacturers are claiming every thing to be SUV, customers are I believe smarter than that. They are not buying them because the manufacturer called it SUV, but they found other benefits with these raised crossovers. Those points are not covered enough in that debate. Why is choosing comfort equals to lack of confidence?

9:35 Completely agree with you guys on this!! I recently took back to back test drive of Elevate and City. I thought the bigger wheels would help the Elevate over the bad roads. But to my surprise, it was City that felt more plush and comfortable. City is one of those gem of a car that offers great handling for the ride quality it has.
Elevate has great suspension for the segment but I think none of the crossovers in the segment can actually offer the ride and handling balance of a traditional sedan.

Suvs has more stiff suspension to reduce body roll cause they are tall boy design whereas sedan are low that's why not much issue of roll over that's why you see soft suspension in sedan.
Spot on, I was ignoring City until last minute and was fixated on Virtus/Slavia/Seltos since I already drive a Jazz .... Thought why not check out.... I just took delivery last week despite wanting a different brand this time, prime reason being plush interior, comfort and known reliability of Honda. Also, the sound of iVtec.

Baffles me
Just returned from Bangkok. Roads and traffic are not much better than a metro city here but the driving etiquette is far better than in India. People just follow their lanes, rules and care about other drivers, no honking. That makes all the difference. The country feels developed simply because of how they drive.

Adding to the discussions on the topic, I feel that as motorists, and enthusiasts, majority of us are yet to realize, understand and accept that vehicles are very individualitisc & intimate experience, whether 2 wheels or 4. Its very seldom that while finalizing a car or a bike, we self introspect our capabilities and our must have experiences, rather the decisions are function of the HCFs and LCMs prevalent in this market.
There is no better way of deciding on a vehicle than experiencing them ourselves. Take multiple test drives - even for the same model, check multiple dealers, plan different routes, take your back-seat elderlies & families for test drives, emulate your real world usage as much as possible in decision making phase itself. Question, research, test drives and feedbacks, these steps give us much better clarity as to what REALLY suits our needs from the vehicle, rather than the wants!

Disagree on the automatic opinion, I live in Bangalore where even a 5 km commute may take 30-60 minutes and after a day of work , an automatic is a god send for us to just get home

I own a 1.5 NA petrol with torque converter ford ecosport. I must say that i love that combo. Fun, simple and easy to maintain.
Yes, though i have been driving MT for years, but AT starts making sense for city drives. Also, though MT gives the actual drive pleasure, better overtakes and control, but AT does give comforts for a very long drive
About the manual vs automatic transmission part, I think it’s essential to learn with a MT, master it and then gradually move to any form of AT, especially in cases of disability or fear. These days we see people solely rely on automatics and fall in trouble thinking that the vehicle will do everything by itself‘ automatically’ hence causing potential problems for everyone around them.
Also, MTs are difficult for young children to operate, thereby reducing the occurrences of underage driving (the internet is filled with videos of the opposite cases).

On the SUV vs Sedan conversation:
I prefer driving a sedan or hatchback in the day time for really long drives for the comfort and confidence they offer. In the night drives I always prefer a high seat MPV or SUV just because of the lights from the vehicles in the opposite side.
These LED projector headlamps falling in people with less road etiquettes is making driving in night literally a nightmare!

This is actually very relevant and probably could be a topic on This Connect, night time driving/ riding. I am 6 feet tall sitting on 845mm height himalayan and i find it a bad experience when the highway dividers are not far away and most indian drivers do not understand the concept of high beam and low beam.. especially the dark, unlit roads.
And to add to this - the overwhelming desire to install white lights (and not yellow), 100W bulbs, I mean proper attempts being made to blind the other person

They do it because usually when people come across a random episode and it's say no. 4 for example they are less likely to watch it as thinking they have to watch other episodes first, while if its just a generic name they will at least click on the video

I am an amateur driver, my father owns an alto and that's what I've driven for 5-6 years. When I sat on my neighbour's nexon and my cousin's duster, the biggest trait I noticed was you can see more of the road and ahead of bonnet of the car and that gave me instant confidence.
If adv's are more safer because you sit taller and can see farther, shouldn't it apply to SUVs also ?
Seeing more does not matter except on offroad. On driving looking further ahead is what matters. At the speeds we do under the bonnet is too late already.
Hey Palash, the thing is with that confidence we just drive faster or get careless. So, back to square one.
The point is people are buying SUVs for the wrong reasons. Also the budget SUVs being sold are not real SUVs.
The bigger wheels on a SUV do not automatically mean it will have a good ride quality.
There are sedans which have even better ride quality and provide better stability and control on bad roads.
Not to mention SUVs are generally more expensive and for that extra money you are not getting much.

Regarding the Skill, I do not agree with Shumi this time..
1. when you sit in the driver's seat the judgement made to stop keeping only 1 feet (30cm) from the front car, is that not a skill?
2. when you sit in the driver's seat, you have to make the correct judgement so that the diagonal end will not bump into another pedistrian, car, bike which is standing on the left side?
3. Parallel parking - is that not a skill?
4. 3 point turn is that not a skill?
5. reversing a car with or without a rear camera - is that not a skill?
6. driving a car in the night on a highway when the big volvos coming on to you with 6 headlights and still you survive, is that not a skill?
7. 8. 9 ... many more...
I dont think we can compare the skill set of a driver and rider. Both are uniquie and may not be compared.

There's also lack of options. There aren't any D segment sedans anymore. All the RnD budget going towards crossovers means they're getting better while sedans are getting worse due to lack of RnD due to low sales.
XUV 700 is probably the best value for money car specially the lower variants. There's no sedan that can compete with it. Big diesel engine, independent multi link suspension, space, comfort, ride quality, power, ease of ingress/egress.
Wish we still had Civic, Octavia, Jetta, Elantra but even those were CKD so couldn't complete in value for money due to being so expensive.

I appreciate your podcasts a lot. One argument that resonated with me is people wanting bigger cars as a status symbol. This is so spot on. Its one big reason why Creta, Seltos and XYV700 or Scorpio sell a lot, even outside of big metro cities. Once someone owns a bigger car, they automatically think they are entitled to their own space on the road. This is also amplified by social media, pop culture where you see regular type people in movies, reels etc almost always own a Fortuner, Sumo, Thar etc.
I am in the market for my very first car and would appreciate your advice. I have only driven a Swift Diesel till this point. I have two sedans at the top of my wish list, Slavia 1.0L/1.5L MT and Verna Turbo MT. I found the Verna Turbo to be much easier to drive because of the lesser clutch travel and the gear changes were so smooth, clutch was butter smooth to operate. VAG clutches on the other hand felt a lot more clunky. Also I found their clutch travel to be on the longer side and the biting point was in the last stages of the clutch travel. Because of this I also ended up stalling the engines on inclines and in stop and go traffic. The Slavia and the Kushaq were a bit of a pain to operate in stop and go traffic. As a first time car buyer, is the long clutch travel and the high biting point something that one gets used to ? My requirements are as much passive safety I can afford (5-star GNCAP rated) and I would be driving this in stop and go traffic a couple of days a week and would take it out on highways 2-3 times a month.

Brother I would not suggest but request you to test drive City. Smoothness, Comfort, and reliability are unparalleled. Maybe lacking on features end compared to the competitors but it gets every feature you need and again lesser the electronics, lesser the chances of failure. Just test drive it once and reply your experience afterwards. Good luck with the purchase of a new car.

I usually drive to Northern Karnataka every other weekend . The hump’s in those areas are mini mountains. I have ford freestyle which has really good ground clearance still in some of the hump’s i need to be careful. So just for the ground clearance i hesitate. I understand now vw and skoda sedans have really good ground clearance but still when i used to drive the sedans by default my bump used to raise as soon as i see a hump coming 😂

Indian car audience has become a SUV lover, even if it is a pseudo SUV, in similar fashion India will become an ADV loving country with respect to two-wheelers.
IMHO, India is not only following new trends but it is the need of the hour, potholes, road joints, age long construction, waterlogging and what not.

Along with unskilled I would also add distracted. See, on the roads I see a lot of distracted drivers(distracted by calls, talking to family members). They are more dangerous than the unskilled ones since they are more confident than the unskilled ones, while being unaware on the road.
But but but..unskilled car drivers are less dangerous to themselves & co passenger than unskilled bike riders..

Do you think all these displays in modern day cars are distracting? I drive a 2010 Alto LXi and the only screen I see is the windscreen.

Definitely don't like Tablet sized screens within the car. As such we're exposed to way too much screen time, I don't want more screens while I'm driving. The Maps thing is convenient, and for that I might give a concession. But otherwise, the lesser automated nonsense inside a car, lesser the headache acc to me.

Adding to the conversation about 5 star cars, I have noticed it on the roads and with some people I know end up spending more time on their phones while driving a car with adas. Just cause it will brake for them. It’s interesting how supportive tech gets misused. Worst part is this can’t get regulated, behavioural change is the only solution I suppose.
Behaviour change is hard, slow but sometimes the only way.

1.I may be in the minority when I say "more people in India should get Automatic because after a stressful day in offices dealing the traffic is way more easier in AT"
2. Many buy the raised back hatchback for number of other reason so marking everyone as noob for driving one is a little too much.
3. I am with Kartik on prices seldom or shouldn't come down because the raw material price changes have very less to do with the actual cost also - case in point the jimmny where customer thrashed the dealers left and right once the prices where down.

hey Kartikeya , i am here for you man spokes wheels on modern classic bike like RE, Triumph, Moto Guzzi, Jawa, BSA, BMW R18 etc.. looks so much Cooler more appropriate and there are option in market to convert spoke wheels into tubeless like Outex tubeless kit, way to speed tubeless conversion kit etc.. The above mention modern classic are in a way life style choice if you want the old school look go for it if not that's okay too enjoy whatever you like man. We as a country need strict law on licensing for sure so that idiot with money don't have access to performance bikes it will just increase the chances of them getting injured and other people too .

Heya RAK! We’ll share this with him. That’s one of his favourites. He always talks about how he thrashed the bike up there and kept expecting punctures… which never happened. 😁
It took a year and a half for my family to convince me to take an SUV. Decided to go ahead with the fortuner (only SUV that drives the way I like) and now with this video, I am back to square one.
Had this wall breakdown moment with regards to royal Enfield thumpers. Had gone to a friend's wedding in Chennai, around 2018 or 2019 I think. Was an owner of the second gen Duke 390 then. And somehow automatically had a hate towards RE because I saw the ktm and re fans fighting over the net and decided to side with my colours. Young blood stupid head type of thing. Had a day to myself before my other friends reached. Was going through the internet trying to decide what to do for the day. All of a sudden just saw this recommendation from some person for this cafe in pondicherry that had this excellent coffee. And I decided that's what I'll do. Rent a bike, head over to pondicherry via the east coast road, have this coffee and come back. There's some situation in Tamil Nadu where rentals were an issue. So the rental I went to was kinda off paper thing. He had a decent selection of Indian bikes . Dukes, dominars and bullets. I had taken my own helmet, it was the HJC fg17. He asked if i ride a fast bike. I said I have a duke. He said you can rent a duke. I said no. I want something else. And just out of some craziness, said I want a cast iron bullet. He said okay. I paid, took the bike and left for pondicherry. And for such a long time I was trying to see it's performance. It just wouldnt go. I said what a waste. Had the coffee. It was meh. Thought the day is ruined. The city of pondicherry is gorgeous though. Has a charm of its own. So walked around a bit and my head calmed down. Went into a bit of sedated state. Amd it was time to go back. on my way back, as I was tired and was already in a calm state of mind, rode the bullet at a much more sedate 65-70 kph. And then everything fell in place. My bums were sore at the end of the day, yes. But that ride through the pleasant east coast road , genuinely thumping along, feeling the wind, was an eye opener. It still isn't my cup of tea. But whenever I go to Goa, I rent an old cast iron bullet once and roam around on that.
Dude! That was beautiful! We felt like we were riding pillion there!

Team Motorinc - Excellent episode but for one point that you may have missed out on regarding the ground clearance. Most often ground clearance is not the prob but Approach Angle is. Approach angle for Sedans and Hatches are relatively lower than that of SUVs and couple of times I have had to take a hatch in reverse on an inclined path because of the low approach angle which would end up scrapping the front .

Another fantastic conversation. I, too, am bewildered by this SUV craze. I have been driving cars for the last 30 years and for most of my life they have been hatchbacks and sedans. The car that enjoyed the most was Ford Figo with 1.5 L diesel engine. It had fabulous handling and ground clearance was enough to clear most speedbreakers. I used to enjoy it more than my C Class which felt more ponderous although it was far more powerful. When I test drove a Landrover Evoque, I just found it incredibly top heavy. I could never see myself driving an SUV, ever. However, serious deterioration of road conditions in the next few years meant I had to go in for a SUV with better ground clearance. I hate that decision today but have to live with it. I extract no joy in piloting a ponderous vehicle. This conversation gives me the courage to go ahead and buy a sedan / hatchback again, while mentally preparing to be more careful while negotiating the roads.

34:55 motorcycles with automatic transmission are not motorcycles. They are scooters. And most motorcycle riders have a mindset that if you ride a scooter, you're not manly enough or that you don't know how to ride a real motorcycle. Yeah. We're pretty conservative.

Although I am highly inclined towards Sedans, choosing between an SUV and a sedan becomes challenging when considering a car for exploring India's beautiful landscapes.
The first 50 minutes of the video convinced me that I don't need an SUV, but the point about 'ADV being best suited for Indian roads in the current situation', has me rethinking the sedan vs. SUV debate(* Especially for our country).

Awesome, as always .. I know a guy who owns a new xuv700 and an old swift .. he brings his old swift to office (doesn't want the XUV to get dirty in pune monsoons) . I am baffled at this.

Yes, let me compare it better. Is a person buying ktm adventure/xpulse/himalayan and attaching 50 extra fog lights and removing silencer, are they putting on a show or following their passion.
Counter intuitively, if someone buys Lamborghini Urus or Mercedes G Wagon, are they putting on a show or following their passion?
90% of the time, any suv owner like fortuner, uses it to pick up their kids from school and go to malls, they have only touched dirt if the roads weren't repaired.

The skill a driver needs to have is also getting removed more and this is also coming to motorcycles as well. Automatic transmission.
I love how safety and needs comes into the same picture when you talk about SUV vs Sedans. I totally agree, we as drivers/riders are not very inclined to learn the skill of driving a manual anymore because of the hassle of driving thru a traffic is more than a hassle. It has become a integral part of our journey. Driving a manual pushed you to have all the awareness you might need to drive on the road but now the scope of being a better driver has also decreased because of the automatic transmission. The older generation are still able to drive at ages above 60 because of the constantly honed skills of driving a manual and hence they know what speeds does a car can complete a turn and how deep you need to go but I don’t think so a guy/girl from our generation can drive that well(maybe not even drive due to AI) at all. And this concern is now coming to motorcycle as well. This concern of not having to shift gears on time and making your brain concentrate rightly on them will free you brain to be filled up stuff like stress about work, life and all hence taking away the point of riding a bike- to have that feeling that the faster you go, the further away you are from your problems. The deeper you go in the jungle, or higher the mountain it is, the harder is for your problems to find you.
Bottom line, you work hard and it gets harder for your troubles to keep up. 😁
You guys are doing the best if the stuff for me at least. I can easily correlate with what you guys did with the last pages of editions you worked on. Me and my younger brother had it by heart. And we vouched the data you shared there. This whole conversation was soothing and very responsible. I mean, for riders, society and provides lot for the administration to thing, (I know they will not).

Wanted to point out that you missed out on one aspect of why many elders are opting for SUVs nowadays - easier ingress/egress. I have seen how some elders who struggled getting in and out of sedans/hatchbacks are so much at ease after switching to an SUV.
And with bikes, there is one big wall everyone seems to have - number of cylinders!

Kartikeya and Shumi.. Just want to thank you both! So much of common sense and wisdom at the same time. There were several moments during the podcast, where I was nodding vigorously, agreeing to what either of you said (Sedans make more sense and yes, we need much better driving license mechanism)
I see many parents riding with their kids, in the wrong way and I instantly know, they are adding another idiotic rider to the road (their kid in the future). And, we lack terribly on Patience when it comes to the road.
This couldn't have come at a better time, I'm planning for a car , so as a first generation car buyer and finalizing a Sedan in a world of SUVs, this video just reflected my thoughts. Very relevant...well done MotorInc team!

Another angle to it is the fast paced life, which demands you to move fast, meet deadlines and just crawl up the ladder. Who has every rejoiced in it? In the end all one seems to seek is the enjoyment in the journey, which seems to be missing in a larger lot of people, since they have just experienced money. It's a new, different experience for them. Unlike the thinker who knows where the peace and sane is. If we want drivers to be patient and understanding, we have to enjoy the journey of life we are in. And if you are not able to enjoy introspect on what is that is missing in your life.

Oh boy! Tubes being used as rubber bands is exactly what we do in our home! We use the tubes as rubber strips to tie down things & one the places where the tube rubber strips shine is connecting the water pipe to the tap. Believe me we've used metal screw type collars for the same purpose but the rubber strips hold on the tap so tightly that it's a bit of a hardwork to untie them once the work is done!😅😅 My dad was the 1st person to introduce us the rubber strips cut from the tubes & we were like, why go through the mess of cutting & opening old tubes & trust me, now that we've seen what there're capable of, we don't what anything else to tie down stuff other then the rubber strips!
I always feel that raised hatch backs, has a better upright seeting posture. Its good for a persons lower back whose day job involves lot of sitting.

I had one incident on my motorcycle many, many years ago where the rear tyre burst because of excess air and a hot summer - I was lucky.
About Pink Floyd, I was asking myself which album was released in the late 90s when The Division Bell was released in '94. And then Schumi mentioned Division Bell! It is such an underrated album and I think this is the first time I have heard someone else mention it!
I rode the Jawa 42 for almost a year and half. It was a great ride as I had only ridden 125cc bikes before. Then the Jawa started its thing, being a complete pain in the head. I switched to a Suzuki V-Strom 250 SX last month, and I'm happy with the bike as I selected it after much research. So Shumi's point is spot on that you do learn from your mistakes, and ultimately you have to learn to think for yourself and choose accordingly.
