- It's been almost a year since we first took a look at CavEX - a Minecraft clone that runs on the Nintendo Wii. Since then, there have been some major improvements to the game that make it even more like the real thing. So let's explore it again!

Smooth lighting, 3D item drops, fancy leaves, clouds enabled. The resolution may be low but the visual details are surprisingly higher than I would expect
I would honestly enjoy this low res version. It just has that old nostalgic look to the game that I miss
it's an incredibly well optimized clone. I've checked in dolphin to see how many polygons it pushes at max: in some scenes, it'll show over 650k polygons in one frame above 30, which is very good for the hardware.
This brings me back to the old days where Minecraft was a fun block game with no PvP or Hackers
@@Liquifiedpizzas600k polygons on wii.... that's insane
Games can perform very well when they're not written in Java.
Wow the creators really went through a lot of effort to make this feel like a legit beta 1.7.3 port, absolutely lovely
Fr
1000% agreed
This is a cool Demake/Port. Hope Mojang won't shut it down like what Valve did to the Portal Demake.
@@legospartan3.042Portal 64 was shut down because it was made using leaked development tools, and Valve was hesitant to give its support due to fear that Nintendo would take legal action.
CavEX is developed above the board with publicly available tools, so Nintendo has no real legal basis to take it down. Plus, Mojang has not been known to take action against fan projects like this in the past.
@@CocoTheMii Well, the issue remains that Mojang/Microsoft could absolutely take it down so, not really reassuring
Minecraft on wii was something I always wanted as a kid, not because I was limited on devices to play Minecraft but because motion controls mixed with Minecraft would've been awesome.
In general, Wii-FPS controls work best for more chill games like Metroid Prime, so it would be great
They got it on the 3DS. If it was a port of pocket edition like the 3DS it totally would have been possible.
Minecraft Wii U edition: allow me to introduce myself
Rerez would beg to differ. See literally every “Just Bad Games” episode featuring a Wii game.
Yes!! Imagine if motion controls were implemented like in BOTW, I imagine it's a lot of work but man that would be so impressive
I love how they implemented the legacy console button prompt tips
Considering how the Wii is ps2 era hardware with more memory this is very impressive. It’s already insanely difficult to optimize this kind of game on a modern device
It's pretty comparable to the original Xbox in terms of performance, and the GPU is definitely adequate for a game like Minecraft. The main limitation of the Wii is its measly 64 MB of RAM, so fitting chunks in memory is tough.
@@pikachuchujelly7628thats half of a ps3 so it shouldnt be that awful
@@kitty.x3the ps3 has 512mb, split 50/50 between the gpu and main system - 256 each way. the wii has an eighth of the total ram the ps3 has, or a quarter if we're only counting the system memory. it's actually the same amount of ram as the original xbox, so way less.
@@z-buffer1273The 64MB on the Wii was just system memory.
The GPU had its own 24MB of VRAM.
It worked on the new 3ds which is close enough to the Wii spec wise
This is surreal, it’s like watching a video straight from 2010/2011. Really neat stuff!
That's really impressive! It replicates the movement and animations better than just about any other Minecraft clone I've seen - if you told me this was an early dev build of an official port I'd believe you
i think its an unofficial port
@@Matthew_MBG It is, I'm just saying it's looking as polished as I'd expect an official port to be when early on in development
It definitely has that feel of the 4J versions
@@olzhas1one755 yeah, it feels like a cancelled wii port being developed at the same time as the 360/ps3 version
Damn. This looks so official that I'm now surprised it never came to the Wii. It's just like the first versions of 360 Minecraft
Probably because the Wii was kind of weak. The 360 version I had did run pretty good in early updates, but got worse over time, especially in split screen. The Wii would probably struggle a bit as the game went along
@@adamspeiser6449did u not watch the video lmao hes literally playing minecraft on the wii
@@avgredditmod, clearly you do not know that it is a dumbed down version of the game. You can tell from the graphics alone that it is not the full game with many limitations. Sure it probably could run on the Wii, but the point is that if a more powerful system could not run it the best, the Wii had an even smaller chance of running the game as updates came out. Yes, it is technically Minecraft on the Wii, but it would likely be tough to get the game running well with the full package deal. That is likely a reason why it was later put on the Wii U instead of the Wii. Just because a game can run on hardware does not mean it should
@@adamspeiser6449it’s an extremely optimized ‘version’ of Minecraft, not just an old one. They had to do a lot to get the Wii to run it
@@Hidden_Fern, exactly. Minecraft is not an easy game to run ironically enough. The 3DS was acceptable, but it used the pocket edition, which is also an optimized version and it lagged still. The Wii needs a lot of help if it were to run it smoothly at a good frame rate and good graphics
The fact the they made this run on something with a 32 bit PowerPC cpu and 64mb ram is absolutely insane.
Wii does not have 64 mb ram. It has 1gb or 2
@@spinningsquare1325 I think you confused with the wiiu which has 2 GB of ram. The wii has 64mb of SDRam and 24mb of Vram
@@spinningsquare1325 The Wii U has 2, the Switch has 4 and the Wii has 64MB.
the Wii has a total of 88MB of RAM
@@codezero7981 shit nevermind
*NEVER* thought I'd see something resembling a Minecraft "lets play" on this channel! Beta 1.7.3 was the version of Minecraft that I started on, so the nostalgia I feel from seeing even the homebrew Wii port is really something else!
Would love to see the motion controls work with the camera, I think it would be interesting to be able to tilt the wii remote and immediately point at something
Yeah, I've heard the Wii had some really good first person shooters with remote aiming. _Call of Duty_ in particular was extremely customizable and dedicated a button to locking the camera so you can free-aim like a rail shooter.
If you're on PC this isn't hard to do at all. You don't even need to mod Minecraft itself, you'd just need to have the wii-motion controls be your mouse input. Sidenote: this would also work with Joycons and PS5's motion controls. Hell, if you're feeling extra masochistic you could set your phone's gyro to be your mouse... I don't know why you'd do that(outside of those BoTW puzzles that need gyro to work), but you could.
The performance is amazing honestly… whoever is doing this work is pretty talented.
ClassiCube (Minecraft Classic clone) has now Wii and N64 ports available
N64? HOW
Link?
Source?
SOURCE?
I think you're confusing the version that adds Mario. Which is not an n64 port
Kinda reminds me of really early Xbox 360 Minecraft, where the tutorial area was this castle place iirc, and a lot of it was very different, still using flatter textures Good times...
Man this is awesome, it feels like a beta version of an unreleased legacy edition of minecraft for the wii, I hope this project gets picked up by someone who knows and wants to continue developing it but if that doesnt happen its fine, very thankful for all the work the dev put in!
Someone should put the things you say on a shirt
you ever feel nostalgic over something that just came out?
thats how i feel looking at the wiimote using items idk why
As someone who never got into Minecraft, I'm learning so much about how the game even works.
It's like a Minecraft tutorial for me.
Good to see this getting updates still
Holy shit this is INCREDIBLE! This looks like exactly like the old console versions of Minecraft. Outstanding work to the dev of this project!
Oh this is an impressive port. The graphics are almost identical. That's amazing work!
EDIT: Lmao the same source code is linux compatible if you change the makefile and source libaries. GPLv3 Minecraft clone time
Happy to see more wii content, keep up the good work though man ❤️
yes finally another wii homebrew related video i love your wii homebrew and wii your wii videos in general thanks michael
This feels so nostalgic like it was actually an official Minecraft version for the Wii
Great video! Your let’s play career is taking off ;)
Also wow, that outro music is smoooth
I absolutely love CavEX, super happy to see you tal, about it more.
Just realized that your one of the few UA-camrs I've been consistently watching for years. It's You, OneyPlays, SaberSpark, and LS Mark lmao
I'm loving the videos man, keep up the great content!
Very impressive technical achievement! I find it funny that is actually looks a little _better_ than b1.7.3 because it appears to have anisotropic filtering.
I hope the creator eventually finds the drive to bring this all the way to feature parity with b1.7.3, or someone else does.
Also when you were testing sources of damage it was painful watching you walk right past a cactus without thinking to touch it. XD
I love the effect the resolution creates
As far as I got: Full iron armor, Gold Pick/Iron, Gold Axe, Mining lapis gives Ink Sacs, doors don't place, chests don't work, flint and steel doesn't light
Beta 1.7.3 was my very first version of Minecraft I ever played. I can't wait to try this
This is very impressive, and is basically indistinguishable from a old console version of the game. I will try this tomorrow!
Wow, quite a major improvement and really worth playing!
This is absolutely incredible! Seeing Survival be implemented makes me so excited to see if all gameplay elements can be added in. If the option for Motion Controls were to be added, I think turning the Wii Remote or Nunchuck for the camera, and swinging one of the controllers for Jumping would help a lot in speeding up gameplay
nice video! Amazing content, love it! Keep up the good work! ❤
Did anyone else watch that Minecraft Wii edition video where it was IRL, and you had to do the actions in real life? I would love that in this
It's so cool seeing such games get ported to the Wii. keep up the great work.
yay new wii video :) keep up the good work!!
The best retro channel on youtube
This is actually amazing! I hope audio and mobs will be added into the game later
I just hooked up my Wii again so this sounds like a great thing to check out myself
this is seriously impressive. i hope someone else can pick up on this in the future!
never thought id see michaeltholomew emjaydee do a minecraft lets play
The quality is impeccable in every regard!
omg!!!!!! definitly installing the update!
Really cool project, glad to see it’s still in development and has evolved into a more playable state
This blows my mind. What a cool project
man this will be an amazing homebrew to add to a wii when this gets game cube controller support (or better wiimote + nunchuck controlls)
before i had a pc i literally dreamt this.
this really just feels like playing minecraft on the xbox in the early days
cool video, mr mjd ❤
Minecraft on the wii was my dream as a child.
Wanted to play minecraft so badly but only had a wii
With a bit more work, this will be amazing, I really hope that there will be fully implemented motion controls that way I can make my childhood dreams come true.
I love your videos!!!!!!!
I have been watching since 2018.
this is so good dude
So cool that the creator updated it!
Do you know if the world generation continues passed what's generated in the world when you make it on your PC? If not is there a limit? Like if you travel very far on your PC, and then go to import it on your Wii, will everything that's generated appear?
if you think about it, the experience is basically what it was around 4 years ago when running the older versions on the minecraft launcher didn't let the audio work. Unless that was just alpha versions, I just remember trying to play some old versions years ago and there wasn't any audio. This port port of minecraft will be great once it has compatibility with gamecube controllers
the gameplay in this video is extremely nostalgic, it feels like i'm watching minecraft on youtube in the early 2010s again.
Y'know the more older I get, the more I feel like retiring from the java edition and sticking to the legacy edition of the game. I'm almost 20 years old for god sake.
If I may ask please, how do you capture footage from your Wii, is it modded to have an HDMI port, you got one of those little Wii 2 HDMI plugs that go in the AV port, or you capturing straight from the Composite/Component cables?
i imagine he’d use a Wii 2 HDMI plug along with a capture card, seems like the easiest option to me.
I would have spent *hours* on this when I was younger. It's incredible to think of what could have been.
I'm very happy to see that video
This is the best Minecraft Letsplay I've ever seen
As a long time minecraft player, it's one of the most impressive demakes i've ever seen. The lighting is on point, the animations, the texture work, the console editions UI, almost looks like an official port
this is honestly really cool. feels a lot like the beta versions
looks like an early 360 build, amazing.
OMG og style mjd video :O
How come they got Minecraft running this smoothly on a Wii yet the official PC version is like 10 FPS on low-end devices?
Man I would have loved this game on the Wii as a kid if it came out on the Wii. heck I would play it now to get around at playing a classic version!
Kinda amazing that they've gone through all this work, and yet haven't bothered with sound, one of the most basic things.
The fact that someone thought, let's just make Minecraft on the Wii!
Wii Remote + Nunchuck would be a fantastic control scheme for Minecraft! Hopefully this version at some point adds support for the Wii Remote pointer.
I’ve been waiting for this for years it’s finally here Minecraft for the Nintendo Wii
I really like your videos ❤
Hopefully we can get motion controls to be able to control tbe camera with motion control like other First person games on tbe Wii.
If the next update comes out, they should add multiplayer. It would be funny to build a boat elevator or cobblestone tower on a WII.
Wii Love New Homebrew & Updates
this seriously feels official. like to most people this is probably indistinguishable from the real beta 1.7.3 at a glance. looks awesome
This is Hella cool! Although they should probably make the crafting like legacy leagcy editions since the controls aren't as good as keyboard and mouse.
I do wish they would implement the Wii cursor for easier controls when playing with Wiimote and Nunchucks, seems like it'd make inventory and camera controls much easier
It took me a second there to realize this WASN’T a port. Damn.
Huh, it's interesting to see how Minecraft isn't so difficult to make, even for hobbyist-level developers. It's a game with near-limitless worlds and being *designed* for numerous creative possibilities (especially through mods), but there's been some really impressive Minecraft-like projects lately, from Minetest to Classicube to now this.
It feels like an alternate universe were they released Minecraft on the Wii.
I did not expect Wii to have enough horse power to run Minecraft
Now, you gotta do streaming series with this for your Wii videos’ fans Michael! (pls)
Man Minecraft inventory with Wii pointer would go hard. I hope that gets implemented.
it is
I liked how it was sunset when he did the outro
Man i remember when i was a kid with just a wii at the time wishing that minecraft would be on the wii one day, maybe i should try this out to fulfill my childhood needs.
I hope someday they add motion aiming at some point. That would make this even more insane
Yo, Mike, headsup, there's a Classicube Wii port that's WIP out there. It's MC classic only, but it's pretty darn complete!
This really makes me want to get out of my chair, boot my Wii up, and download this right now.
In Minecraft.
I love your videos, have since 2018
the inventory system could use the pointer to move around the items.
it's the only reason i would play minecraft with a Wii Remote
holy shit i just noticed i have the same cambridge soundworks desktop speakers that are on your desk!!!
i’d like to try this some time
I hope they will eventually implement Wii pointer controlls. I always found Minecraft to be very unpleasent with analog controlls, but I feel like motion could actually work very well.
Wow for a clone if anyone ever told me that this was some lost cancelled version I would believe it this pretty much looks like a legit minecraft version
I hate how even without SFX my brain remembers all the SFX from the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions.
damn this is amazing!
I think so the hoe would function when right clicked or whatever that control is or else when the dirt is in contact with water.
