"Ahead of the song reveal, Raiven told Wiwibloggs that her song was inspired by a real-life historical figure named Veronika, who was the first woman in her country accused of being a witch. It is, she says, a statement on how women have been and remain targets of persecution."

It is the statement that love lives for ever, you can not burn it or drown it, no matter how much hate people build around. Frederick II- never remarried after losing her....She was not good enough for his father, so he had her murdered.

It is supposed to be a real historical person. Veronika Deseniška (1380 - 1425) was the second wife of Frederick II. of Celje, but since she was a noblewoman of a lower status, Friderik's father, the powerful Count Herman II of Celje, did not approve of their union. When Friderik and Veronika fled to Fridrihštajn castle near Kočevje, where they secretly got married, old Herman sent an army after them with the order to capture them. Friderik managed to save Veronika from the castle, but he was captured by the soldiers and imprisoned in the tower at Celje Castle - this is still called Friderik's Tower. He was imprisoned here for more than four years, Veronica was also captured and imprisoned. Herman accused the unhappy Veronika of being a prostitute who seduced his son. They organized a trial that lasted two days, and although the judges found no guilt, let alone a crime, Herman had her murdered. he basically accused her of witchery and drowned her

Hi there... Short recap of Veronika story. It's about the historical story of the greatest counts on Slovenian lands.
It's the real story of Romeo and Juliet from Slovenia. Jung count fell in love with Veronika after being married with blood lines from nowdays croatian. So his father, the count of Celje (that got the title of king in last decade) didn't support sons and Veronica decision and started to attack a couple. Also because of church involvement. Veronika was from a small village called Dišnik nowadays in Croatia as a daughter of a low born nobleman.
So the first wife of joung count died in a strange way. For years they were avoiding the count. Young count built a castle in remote parts of Slovenian forests. He married Veronika, his father the count finally got him imprisoned. Then they hount down Veronika and have a trial against her. She was not guilty but the count got her imprisoned and murdered/drowned anyway.
The story goes that the couple had a blind son. Which was murdered too. She was buried in a small village church and later her husband removed her remains to the monastery of kartuzians in Jurkloster.
Bloodline of the counts died within the next generation. With last of the counts grandson, a young count son, a first born from first marriage. That was brought up by a sick grandfather with big ambitions. At the golden age of family bloodline the count was one of the strongest in SE Europe. The daughter of count was married and became an Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, Queen of the Czech Republic, Queen of Hungary, Queen of Germany. Sad story, where the old count just destroyed his bloodline. As there was no ear after nephew, the Habsburgs took over most of the lands. As that was a part of political agreement among two families.

She was accused of witchcraft, but was found innocent at the court. However, the prosecutor, who was count's father (the count was her husband), didn't like that and they drowned her anyway...

Of course you love aesthetic and music, you're Italian and you just know what that means.
Raven made it to show women power and resiliance even in death.
Veronica was accused to be a witch and sencenced to death by drawning. She lost everything, her love, her social status, friends ...but she didn't stop fighting for justice and her life.
I also, like you ,love Raven's passion for life and for music...so I really hope she will be understood among other "normal" rhythms.

    Here are the lyrics:[
    song "Veronika"]
    [Stanza 1]
I hid in the river and went into the silent night
Silent calls for help with loud footsteps
Now that I'm just water in the waves, I'm looking for peace
I drown in myself, surrender to the light
    [Chorus]
Find me, hurt me, defend me
When you chase me, when you leave me
Pick me up, let me down, love me
Who's chasing you when you're afraid of me?
    [Stanza 2]
Who are you afraid of when you hide your desires?
You look into my eyes, the image of you glows in them
    I'm a rimless mirror
I'm just a reflection of your fears
    [Chorus]
Find me, hurt me, defend me
When you chase me, when you leave me
Pick me up, let me go, love me
Who's chasing you when you're afraid of me?
    [Bridge]
    I am
    You are
    Veronica
    Only she knows your truth
    I am
    You are
    Veronica
    Only she knows your truth
    [Conclusion]
    I am
    You are
    Veronica
    Only she knows your truth

I don't like it when countries choose pieces that are just generic pop songs or, even worse, trash products that only aim to shock the public. We all, in literally every country, are full and over-saturated with those kind of songs and, at least IMO, don't need to hear the same exact thing over and over again, just brought from somwhere else.
I love it, instead, when they somehow represent the country, when they sing in their own languages (it's the bare minimum to me) and choose melodies or lyrics/themes that represent somehow the country. That should be the whole point of eurovision and, sadly, a lot of countries miss it every year.
I still haven't heard a lot of countries's entries, but so far i like this one very much, and i also like very much serbian's Breskvica's and Teya dora's ones, or Norway's one, for example. They convey something meaningful to their own country or something rooted in it, some story/issue/thing ready to be shared with the rest of the world that, most likely, is unaware of it.
I want to be amazed, fascinated, to learn or just even understand something new. Not to hear a generic pop song that god only knows how did it end up in an international contest.
I know, it can sound rude and harsh but that's my two cents, i loved to watch the eurosong as a kid when a lot of countries contributed even with just unique sounds or concepts and elements native to their own countries, now most of it seems to have been washed away.

Well greetings from Slovenia, I gave you my like :).
The song is based on story of first recorded witchceaft process of real person Veronika Deseniška, she was the wife Of count of Celje Frederick IIi n 15 th century. At the end charges of witchcraft were dissmised, but she was killed by drowning in river or bathtub. I think Video relate to that as well as music is.
So dear Cacneas I hope this helps.

Veronika of Desenice died 17 October 1425)[1] was the second wife of Frederick II, Count of Celje.
Veronika was of lesser status,[1] and Frederick's father Hermann II was greatly opposed to the marriage. The chronicles of the Counts of Celje suggest he had his son arrested and, while holding him prisoner, initiated a trial against Veronika accusing her of witchcraft. She was acquitted by the court.
Despite the court's ruling, she was incarcerated in Ojstrica Castle near Tabor and murdered (supposedly on the orders of Hermann II) by drowning in 1425.

About song Veronika (to maybe understand this drowning, bodies and all the water more): The story of the love between Count Friderik II and Veronika of Desenice is one of the greatest love stories in Slovenian history. He was the son of a powerful ruler, while she was a rural noblewoman. Their love was so strong that nothing could stop it.
Rumour has it that Frederick II of Celje, son of the mighty Count Herman II, had a hand in the death of Elizabeth of Frankopan, his first and legal wife. Contrary to his father’s will he secretly married Veronica of Desenice immediately afterwards. Because of this, his father had him imprisoned in the main tower, where he spent over 4 years and where, according to a legend, he wanted to starve him. Meanwhile, after being acquitted in the first witchcraft process in Slovenia initiated by this sly old Count, Veronica was drowned. Herman II accused unfortunate Veronika of being a witch who had cast a spell on his son and he was 100% sure that's why his son killed his first wife and married Veronika.
