    20 lb pellet bag but 18lb hopper is a great point but maybe traeger assumes the other 2lb's of pellets would be in the auger?? Idk maybe I'm wrong.

    Very well done review and very honest. I like how you gave the good and the bad in your opinion. I do have an answer regarding the hopper size. There is no reason why anyone should have a 20lb hopper. You will never go through all 20lbs in one cook. Unless your using it every day the hopper should be emptied and pellets stored correctly. When moisture gets in the hopper the pellets tend to go bad. Some people don’t know this and after a few weeks and some rain they turn the grill on & next thing you know the auger locks up because the pellets turn to sand once heated going through the auger. Then you need to take entire grill apart to clean it out and it’s a pain. Always store unused pellets after a cook in a sealed container to keep them optimal.

      I appreciate the comment Nozzy. I do actually use my pellet grills on most days at some point. I go thru about 2 - 3 bags a week. Now I have an XL, so it isn't an issue anymore with a 42lb hopper LOL. Cheers!

    I like the thought of a 20# pellet hopper, but why not 22# ? Most people will not let the hopper run out completely or empty extra pellets out to switch pellets , so it will always have extra pellets left. 22#’s will give ya the extra room. Excellent review!👍

    The 18lb capacity is a good idea. It leaves you with a 2lb reserve if you aren't paying attention to a long cook and run out. After you cook just put the 2lbs in the hoper. That's just my thought.

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  5 років тому

      Put all 20lbs in and you don't run out. 20lb hopper should equal a 20lb bag. I love the 780....but I prefer the 20lb hopper that my GG Silverbac has.

  • @progers5019

    Sandy, you are good at doing reviews. Very thorough and detailed with the mostly good, as well as the small amounts of bad. I don't have a pellet smoker (yet) but you helped give me some more great facts to chew on. This upgrade seems to have many good improvements. I'd rather have SS grates too, but I tell ya the porcelain enamel coated stuff is tuff and can withstan high temps. I've got one I use to burn charcoal on and gets very hot but after washing it off it is good as new. Thanks for the great review.

    Which one do you prefer Treager or Silverbac

  • @gfoster3434
    @gfoster3434 4 роки тому +1

    Complained about the 18lb hopper, but it only makes a difference the first time you fill it up. After that, you are going to top it off after most cooks and leave yourself with a partial bag. I watched his Grilla Silverbac review video which has a 20lb hopper and he poured in pellets to top it off. He even poured it from a large plastic container, so you know its nothing specific to a grill with an 18 lb hopper. I don't own one, just doing research and thought I'd point that out.

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  4 роки тому

      I actually pour full 20lb bags of pellets in my hoppers all the time...at least the one that holds 20lbs., because I use my grills almost daily. The plastic container that you mention holds 40 lbs of pellets...not just a piece of a bag. I put them in there so they stay dry. I do own, not one, but four pellet grills, and have owned two more. My experience is that I STILL prefer to have a 20lb hopper to match a 20lb bag of pellets. When my silverbac gets low, I can dump the whole bag in there. Pretty simple.

    • @gfoster3434
      @gfoster3434 4 роки тому

      Jus' Piddlin BBQ so you let your 20lb capacity hoppers go all the way empty before you fill them up????

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  4 роки тому

      G Foster at times it gets pretty low. Especially if I don’t have any extra pellets on hand. Not to the point where I can see the auger, but pretty close.

    • @gfoster3434
      @gfoster3434 4 роки тому

      Jus' Piddlin BBQ thanks for the reply. For those of us who purchase (or are considering purchasing) pellet grills for the set it and forget benefit, don’t you think we would just top off the hopper every cook or every other cook? Waiting till the hopper gets super low before refilling seems like a risky proposition. Especially if it is low in the middle of a cook.

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  4 роки тому

      G Foster I don’t believe in “set it and forget it”. Do your pellets however you want to do them. I shared my opinion. Thanks for the comments.

    Do you suggest to seal the edges .....thank you

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  3 роки тому +1

      I don't suggest it because I don't think it will matter. It is not a sealed chamber other than the lid and chimney...i.e. the grease trap opening. The amount of smoke that leaves is going to be the same due to the pressure inside the chamber. Sealing the edges is fine, but more smoke will just come out of the chimney/grease trap opening (if that makes sense). It won't hurt anything, but I don't think it will matter.

      @@JusPiddlinBBQ Ran across this channel and realize I didn't update. So far I like the grill very much. I found out unfortunately how durable it is when 2 times the wind took it and tipped it over(I was leaving it outside, now I roll it in the shed when I'm done with it. Chicken turns out phenomenal in this thing. Burgers and brats(I'm from Wisconsin LOL) also work well. I did the thanksgiving turkey in it as well. The Turkey was about a 17 pound one and it took about 4 hours at 350 degrees. I used the Traeger pellets and brine kit. Everyone love it. Ham works well too but that took a little longer than doing it in a regular oven. I do agree with you why didn't they just go ahead and use a 20 pound hopper? They do in the Ironwood and Timberline ones. Sometimes the Wifire is a little stubborn about wanting to connect but I can get it to do it.

    I mentioned the 20lb hopper thing to my Traeger salesman and he didn’t think it was a big deal. I said, they are making the 20 lb hopper for the ironwood anyway? He had nothing to say. I’m still trying to decide which 2019 Traeger to get. I hate that the smaller one doesn’t have four castors! Now it’s between the 780 and the smaller ironwood?...

      I would look at Grilla, IMO they are the way to go, TRaeger sat on their hands for so long and arrogantly tried to keep rolling on OG reputation, while everyone else innovated. Finally Traeger must have brought in new blood and are developing or copying other MFG improvements.

      @JusPiddlinBBQ  5 років тому

      PJ Lacey if I were going to get an Ironwood, I'd go ahead and get the 885. I know that increases the price, but it is only $200 more than the 650, and you get more grill. Otherwise, I'd get the Pro 780.

    Your other videos on the Grilla Grill Silverbac had me sold on buying one of those but after watching this video I’m confused on which grill u actually prefer. Which grill wud u suggest I purchase between the two? Thank you.

      I like both of them. The traeger is more expensive, but the controller is way more advanced with wifi. If wifi isn't important to you go with the silverbac. Can't beat the price and build quality.

    Thanks for the review! I just got my Traeger 780 pro yesterday and noticed the temperature on the smoker is completely off. Another thing I noticed is that it didn’t produce any smoke while I was smoking my tri tip? I’m a first time Traeger owner and a bit confused on these things. Have you experienced either of these issues with your Traeger?

    Is it normal for the pro 780 to be hotter at the grill surface compared to what the unit reads? Set my 780 to 225 but ambient temp at the grill surface reads 25-35 degrees hotter.

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  2 роки тому +1

      I've never measured the grill surface temp on any of my grills. I just trust the grills and cook. If the cooks are turning out the way that I want them to, then I don't really worry about what the temp says. Don't overcomplicate things. Grab a beer and enjoy!

    Great video, been enjoying your channel as a new enthusiast. Been a couple weeks with IRONWOOD 885 (D2 controller)... holds temp great, app is amazing, wifi connection is great, very glad I picked up a Treager (first smoke was 5 racks of ribs, 2 tri tips, 12 chicken legs).

      Pros and Cons to each. If you like wifi, go with the pro 780. If wifi isn't important, I would go with the SB. I love them both.Cooking surface is a bit bigger on the 780

    Great review Sandy! What are your thoughts on the build quality of the burn pot and heat deflector? The deflector seems very thin imo. Cool looking stickers by the way.

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ
      @JusPiddlinBBQ  5 років тому

      Thanks Bill. Only issue with build quality that I have is heat deflector, lid catch, and the 18lb hopper design. I forgot to mention the deflector, but I think it should be more sturdy, but it does what the name implies, so we will see how it lasts.

    One of the best reviews I've seen for ANY traeger. Does this model have super smoke and how does the wifire do after you've used it a while? Does it lose signal often?

    • @JusPiddlinBBQ

      No super smoke, but the wifire works great from the back corner of my backyard.
