  • I'm in about $800 on parts. I prefer name brand if possible, as the cheap chinese bundles on amazon (with weird or no names) tend to be poor quality and fail. Most of the items I purchased through RockAuto. I got some items through amazon due to availability and time frame, and a few items from a local store.
I only had to replace 1 piston, so if I had to replace all 4 of them it would have been around $180 more than I was already spending.

Good video i need a my 2.4 ecotec refreshed but you've got more skills than me. How much is your labor for a job like this?

This rebuild is very time consuming. I only do my own jobs, but I would charge $1K-$1,500 labor for something like this. Parts would be on top of that. That is why a lot of shops just want to motor swap with a new or used engine, it's much quicker.

I just put new rings in. The cylinder wall looked fine. The piston had valve contact which is why I replaced that one.

Great video as most videos don't focus on the parts and costs.
Did you replace the rod bolts? I'm all confused about the bolts in this thing, as it looks like 20 to replace the halves. ( are they torque to yield?
I'm having to get the block decked as the two center cylinders seem to have dropped and after three head gasket tries, I am going to have to get it decked. Ugh.

I can't imagine that I replaced the rod bolts, they don't have a very tight TTY spec on them like a Head bolt would have. I typically just reuse the same rod bolts/cam bolts, etc unless I've seen something that made me weary. I don't have that particular All Data detail available to me or I would give you the torque spec and wear detail.

Did you take the block to a machine shop or did you measure the cylinder bore and hone it yourself? Or did you just slap in new rings and call it good?

How long did it take you? Im getting ready to do my 14 Equinox with the 2.4L and am gathering a parts list. This is my first time but feel pretty confident. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the video

Pay the $20 for Alldata 30 day subscription so you have access to all directions, torque specs, fluids, part #'s, etc. Use the plastic "razors" when removing old gaskets so you don't score cylinder head and other parts. Several cans of brake cleaner. Shop towels for all the fluid mess.
Take your time and take all the photos as you go so when your are routing cables and coolant lines you can see how they went.

Do you have the 4 or 6 cyl engine? What symptoms are you having? Does it shake while at a stop, in gear?

6 cylinder. It’s been idling kinda rough for about two years. As of last Friday it started cutting off at red lights or stop signs. 1st time it’s ever done that. Drives great. 214,000 miles on the motor. It’s the best driving vehicle I’ve ever had. Plugged the system check device in and all that popped up. Leaking oil too. I’m afraid to hear “we need to rebuild your motor or replace it “.

It doesn’t shake while at a stop in gear it just simply cuts off. As long as I’m driving it all seems normal. Great take off speed etc.

There are too many questions to ask to go into real troubleshooting. I would start by checking, testing the VVT solenoids. How clean is the oil, filter, frequency of being changed. If the timing chain and guides have never been changed they could be stretched to their max.

Sealed Power from Rock Auto. Standard size. I like OEM stuff typically but I didn't have quick access to them.
