    Interesting design and concept. I also understand you can keep in AWD too, (button selection). Over time, I this will help in owners fuel costs.
    Time will tell if there are any issues regarding as Quattro itself is bulletproof.

    If i am not mistaken audi has retained the center diff that splits power from front to rear this is just added clutches that make it fwd by uncoupling the rear driveshaft when not "needed". When the car is in sport or the esc off the awd stays on always as usual with constantly varying torque being shifted front and rear as needed. Audi changed the center diff many years ago but it still acts like a torsen.

    • @Dandle01
      @Dandle01 3 роки тому +1

      There is no centre diff when you have a system with clutches. It's not needed, this system puts power from the transmission to the front wheels, with the clutches engaging to tap power to the rear wheels when needed.

    • @ralex3531
      @ralex3531 Рік тому

      @@Dandle01Ultra literally has a center differential. The front and rear wheels move independently.

    • @Dandle01
      @Dandle01 Рік тому +2

      @@ralex3531 it shows you the clutch pack engaging and disengaging the rear axle. There is no centre diff in that video. It's not required when clutch packs are used. You can't send power just to the rear wheels as the front always have power the transfer case can just vary the power to the rear.

    So basically FWD with AWD option.

    This system sholud not be called "Quattro Ultra", thats deceptive. It provides less AWD performance than classic quattro, only a bit higher efficiency.

      A torsen based quattro with mechanical lockers should be reffered to "Quattro Ultra" ;)

    Shame on you Audi! You gave up the best thing you had - permanent Quattro AWD. Quattro ultra is better than most common classical AWD with Haldex clutch, but it can't compete with permanent AWD system lika old Quattro. I'm disappointed...

    Too complicated system. Clutch disks must be durable due to hight engine (diesel) torque and small diameter . Good for every day driving and for snowed roads but in mud terrain or offroad a lot of things may be falling apart

    Audi lost patent rights to use Torsen, patent expired so Audi had to come with their own drive system. As you can see, it is really extremely complicated. Audi did not invent Torsen, they bought rights to use it and in 2008,. (I belive) they lost rights.

    All these fancy AWD tech that could fail and yet subaru can match it with just a simple open diff and braking the other wheel effectively to provide traction to the other wheel.

    Después de ver como VW, BMW en un documental sobre la trampa que hacían para encubrir las emisiones con los motores TDI , ahora le tengo mis reservas a los autos de Lujo, ahora mi opinión es que te venden marca nada mas y solo te enseñan lo que siempre han tenido los autos normales como el toyota, nissan , mazda, kia etc etc , y a menor precio al único que que si creo que hace bien su trabajo y por eso es caro es el VOLVO, de los autos de Lujo. los demás ahora los miro diferente, y según miro en este vídeo eso ta lo tienen todos los autos incorporado si el auto es tracción en las 4 ruedas.

    so hang on, it looks to me like when the dog clutch engages at the back, the rear diff is effectively locked, the left and right cannot spin at different rates. so does that mean, AWD is disconnected during any turning? If so that sucks, and if not, that also sucks. that simply cant work? when someone turns the rear wheels will be cancelling each other out, rubbing up tyres, and wasting fuel. but if my suspicion is right tht it only kicks in if the wheels are straight, then this is a completely useless AWD system, because AWD is meant to help in turning.

    • @cosync
      @cosync 5 років тому

      or is it just disconnecting the right driveshaft from the gear inside the diff carrier? perhasp its that.

    • @danielwaughn5835
      @danielwaughn5835 5 років тому

      cosync just the right drive shaft. Not even a locking diff. It’s essentially a cheaped out version of the S4 sport differential with a prop shaft decoupler in the gearbox with left side permanently connected to the diff and dog clutch on the right. So no thrust vectoring or limited slip

    • @cosync
      @cosync 5 років тому

      @@danielwaughn5835 yep i worked it out eventually lol. I like the other parts of the system, especially the worm gear clutch cam. Much better than hydraulic whose pump motors overheat. ANd better than BMWs system which jsut gears down using standard gearing to move the camplate.

    Audi-developed "Crown Gear" differential. With the new "Crown Gear" center differential, up to 70% of the torque can be applied to the front wheels while up to 85% can be applied to the rear wheels if necessary.
    This means when its on front wheel drive mod only, 70% power to front wheel. lost 30% for nothing, totally wasted...

      when you need 100%, you get 100%... Just not all on the front axis only, which you shouldn't want anyway unless you enjoy an unrefined cookie cutter overpowered fwd....
      So, no... not wasted at all
