    After watching numerous videos and buying a new starter, I found your video, and in a minutes, started my TJ which had been dead for 2 weeks. (and about to be taken to the repair shop) Thanks for the information. Good stuff!

    I've been battling starting issues for over a year and this just helped me fix it in literally 2 minutes. I have a 2004 X and my fix was moving the spare 20amp fuse from #19 to empty slot #20 in the fuse box behind the glove box. Thank you!

    Have a 2000 TJ that was bypassed when I bought it 10 years ago. Have several battery disconnects and (dead battery, winch addition, amp addition etc) and never had a problem with it “resetting” the bypass. All good here!

    This video saved me a bunch of heart aches. He doesn't mention it but the switch is locked up and to the left. Very tight space. My clips were not next to each other. You can easily find the safety switch because you can follow the wires out of the clutch. Then look to the left for a similar clip to clip it into.

    Hey! Got a 2003 Jeep TJ Rocky Mountain edition, the solution for me was putting the fuse in the bypass slot behind the glovebox! Easy fix, the owners manual helped out!

    Great tip! For my 2003 Rubicon I just put a 10 amp fuse in position 20 which did not have a fuse. Works like a charm. Thanks for the tip!

    Had a buddy with a remote starter on his TJ. One morning he started it and walked outside to his jeep driving itself into the woods. I always thought his jeep was trying to escape to have some fun since he liked to baby it, but now i think this may have had something to do with it.

    Thanks for the post. My main reason for researching this is my starter is weak and even though I'll replace it, it made me think, "what if my starter went on the trail or anywhere for that matter". I'd hope to jump start it to get home, but I couldn't with the safety switch working. I was going to install a switch similar to the one in my Tacoma (temporarily bypasses the safety switch), but switching a fuse is much simpler and easy to put back into operation. Thank you.

    Thank You Thank You Thank You 2 hours of charging the battery, checking fuses, switching out relays and beating on the starter solenoid with a hammer all to no avail. Finally thought of the clutch starter lock-out. 2002 Wrangler and the fuse in slot #20 worked perfectly. Always hated that lock-out. It was always a safety feature to be able to move a dead car with the starter motor when the engine refused to start.

    Good work, posting this info. I have a KJ Liberty/Cherokee (Australia) and I'll look at your tips. When mine wouldn't start, a road service guy shorted wires in the starter relay under the hood/bonnet(Australia) and it started. He refused to tell me which of the 6 contacts that he shorted. Lucky that I live on a hill, because I can clutch start it. I'll try my dealer later today re a free replacement. If, as I expect, the answer is "no" then I'll try these tricks. I've been driving manual cars for 57 years, and this is the only car with this system that I've had. When I was taught to drive putting your clutch pedal down was one of the lessons. Car makers today are far too smart for themselves with these kinds of devices.

      George Aguirre nothing will happen while driving. The downside is if you turn key to start position while clutch is not pressed the vehicle will lunge. If your foot isn't on the brake it will lunge harder.

    I have a 1997 TJ but don't seem to have the plug in bypass you refer to. I've owned the jeep for 22 years and replaced the safety switch before. I'm wondering if the previous owner might have done any funny stuff before me. could a later model in 1997 been wired like a 98? is that possible. I really hate the clutch safety switch, but right now the jeep isn't driveable due to the safety switch is broken. Any Ideas?

  • @scottscoville1118

    I will also point out that a car will leap further if your foot slips and you pop the clutch, having started the engine, than it will if you bypass the clutch switch, forget, and start it in gear. So even if you have the safety switch, you could still hit someone. I smashed the grill of a truck that was parked nose-to-nose to my work van one morning when i was really tired and my foot slipped off the pedal. That was in the days before hardly any safety devices, and the rubber had all come off my shiny metal clutch pedal. Hey, that would be a great name for a rock anthem: "Shiny Metal Clutch Pedal." Rock On!

    I have a 2004 Rubicon. If you just put it into 4 Lo, it automatically bypasses the switch. So, for trail riding, this works great in a sticky situation. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable having it permanently bypassed for everyday road driving. An extra $4 a month through my insurance gets me free towing if I break down.

    One downside I see to this is that theft may increase with the safety switch bypassed. For a car thief who doesn't know how to drive stick (or start a vehicle with a manual), this would allow them to start it like any car and be more likely to get it moving, granted it would be a slow get-away since they would probably leave it in first gear.

    • @vanceogden2482
      @vanceogden2482 7 років тому +1

      Yes, if it was in 2WD high or 4WD high, a Jeep will stall if nobody is stepping on the gas. On the other hand if it is in 4WD low it will drive off. I have my Jeep Wrangler in slow moving parades frequently. It is a standard and this would equal a LOT of stepping on the clutch. Instead I put it in 4WD low and it will crawl along at parade walking speed with no foot on clutch or gas pedals. Low is so low geared it will even climb rather steep hills like that at a constant speed

    Could you add a switch to go hack and forth. To in gage it and or disengage.

      Depends on what design it is and what kind of switch you use. what i mean by what switch you use as in if you need a 2 way, 3 way, return switch/ momentary switch etc.

      +Chase Park I believe you could use a relay and a 2 way switch with any year and any setup though. kind of all depends on how much you want to dig into the wiring. i guess. Me, I hate messing with anything electrical because I don't have the patience. I do know 100% that any switch I've bypassed, all i did was ground it. once again it depends on what kind of switch it is i believe. sounds like I'm just rambling now. lol someone please tell me if any of that made sense and if so how correct am I? i just know what's wirked for me and people I've helped.

    The clutch safety switch was intended to prevent the oil change guy from crashing your vehicle into the wall of the lube shop.

    I'm confused what do you do when you shift or start going in like first gear?

    • @michaelbleepinjeep5817
      @michaelbleepinjeep5817 8 років тому +1

      You still have to use the clutch to change gears. This just removes the requirement to press the clutch before the Jeep will start. (So you can start the Jeep in gear if you wanted.)

      This just allows you to start the jeep while you are in gear. Let's say your jeep dies on the trail and it won't start, this allows you can leave the jeep in first gear and and use the starter motor to move your jeep off to the side without having to push it. Also, let's say you stall out on a steep hill and it's imperative you don't roll backwards. Now you can use the starter to start your jeep in gear and not only restart the jeep but also get it moving forwards without the chance of rolling backwards.

      It also allows you to start it in Neutral. If you're working on your jeep and want to reach in and start it without having to get in and press the clutch.

    I have an 05 and I just replaced the clutch, when i go to crank it, it pulls all the power as if it was going to crank it but wont spin the starter(i know the starter is good), trying to bypass clutch safety switch to see if that is the problem, anyone know if there is an additional step to bypassing besides the fuse under the hood?
