I've been wanting to learn this for about 40 years. Tonight, after a few views of you video, I am about 95 percent there with it. I now have at least one guitar tuned to Open G. Thanks so much for all the excellent lessons over the years, you are a great teacher.
Justin, you sir in my estimation have the most well explained and executed tutorials on UA-cam.Before I found your site I was greatly frustrated with many of the other individuals trying to show how to play this song.If there ever is a UA-cam Grammy award for music tutorials you certainly will have my vote. Keep up the in-depth detail of your teachings as there are many among us who need a fast track to learning and building up our repertoire in order to keep the bar room audience content. I would just like to know who the 36 chuckleheads are who gave the tutorial a thumbs down,... I would assume they are orchestral violinists, lol.
This song is the greatest blues-rock song ever, IMO. And Justin breaks down the genius of the song with his great teaching. It's what you play and what you don't that sets this song apart for me. Compelling dynamics.
Thanks for this lesson! It helped me fill in some gaps in my attempts to play it. You make some great points in your lessons. Mainly that it's not just getting the notes right but getting the timing and feel. Soooo important! When bending notes being sure to end in the right place and add a bit of vibrato when hanging out a note or chord if the song dictates it. I learned that fairly early on in my learning so that I got offers to be in bands and still do. I have been around some technically brilliant guitarists that aren't really good at feel and being musical. They play all the right notes but is sounds mechanical when it shouldn't. I had an instructor that had to argue that what he just played was technically correct by music theory. The only problem was that it didn't sound good or fit the song. You should never have to explain why you did something in a song when improvising. It should make sense and speak for itself. Then there are guys like Jimmy Page that can be a bit sloppy but nail the feel of the tune so completely. Sorry for the long winded post!
Nearly 6 years later and this lesson is still giving!. I always played this in standard 'E' tuning and could never quite get it to sound right - this sounds great and I can't believe how much easier it is to play. thanks Justin
Hey nice work on the timing there! I've been playing that song since I was 15 (53 now) but never really worked hard on the studio version. Lots of elegantly simple stuff there.
great lesson. I remember trying to figure it out when I was 13 and didn't know about the open G tuning..it was frustrating. this is perfect. great teacher.
How annoying is that learning songs by ear before the days of the Internet then realising your tuned wrong years later, learners have it so much easier now...
A great lesson Justin, I have played for decades but always in standard tuning, I just decided to look at open G, I hope it doesn't confuse my regular playing and totally screw me up bur Mr Richards certainly makes some beautiful music with this tuning so here goes. Thanks for a great lesson.
my favorite guitar teacher . You transfer fun every time to me and your analysis and teaching of the technique and all the details is absolutely excellent !
Justin is my daily drug and that's for sure! Thanks for this cool tune and for all your all free lessons that you share with us! greetings from germany
Great job Justin. Wish I could spend 5/6 months playing/ LEARNING to play with you. You have such patience & you don't show off. Job well done. Watching you from Nebraska USA.
Thanks for posting this. You definitely got it nailed. Great tone, too. One takeaway from this is that there are guitar players out there who slag Keith's ability, as if he can't / couldn't play or come up with a complex guitar part. Tracks like this one prove them wrong completely. Peace.
Brilliant Justin, just learned another classic, now learning Gimme Shelter ,Keith Richards riffs on both these songs are genius, first I,ve played open G,and GS,is open E,thanks for helping me get away from strummin chords only, cheers Justin
You seem to have a lovely personal nature. As a fellow guitarist I'd love to have a beer with you sometime; but alas, the middle of England is a bit far away for me to Australia. I always suspected that this track was open-G tuning. It's the only way to get those slides right with the open tuning ring. As you say, some of those riffs are lovely. A lot nicer than I previously gave credit. As always, a nicely presented and clear tutorial.
Hey Justin , a big hello from Australia ,& thank you so much for this lesson , you are very good with your guitar knowledge & the way you share it man , this was an old favorite of mine from my days of being a rebel teenager , lol!! now i'm an old blues man & loving it , harmonicas & slide guitar get me through my black days & you my good man have been a big help , so thank you Justin
No surprise your lessons on the stones are really good....considering you were in a stones tribute band for a long time.....and the counterfeit stones are a bloody good tribute band....I was watching your lessons for like 5 years before I realised I had probably seen you play live 3 or 4 times with them.
Good God Justin I thought I could play the Guitar pretty good. I guess the key word in that sentence should be PLAY. You are teaching me how to work it again. Brother I really appreciate these videos. Thank you, Frank Sconiers
Great stuff Justin.......you have an impressive catalogue of instruction.......best bit for me is your always cheerful greeting after you have run through the main lesson topic.....you are one of the best
Great lesson there Justin... I'm working on it now.. I noticed how you're wearing out the fret board on the fourth fret , bending them 2nd and 3rd. strings on the Teli . Wish I could do that . Anyways .. Back to your Lesson . Peace Out.
🎼🎵First guitar EVER a genuine 1960's heavy as lead, telecaster that I got for $10 bucks (😝, dollars) at his garage sale/Boston. Best guitar sound ever. Could listen to that opening (HTW)/sound all night long . ...🎶🎼
Hey Justin -- and for a true mental-mashup, listen and play along with a live version, where Mick Taylor on the chorus is doing a ah-chucka-- chucka - chucka - chucka on the first and fifth majors. Maybe Keith didn't let him do it in the studio. But doing it live, that drives the chorus along. Live, I couldn't hear it done without that.
The best lesson of this song. Accept no other! Justin takes it nice and slow. He counts the riffs out, repeats them, and then ties it all together!
I've been wanting to learn this for about 40 years. Tonight, after a few views of you video, I am about 95 percent there with it. I now have at least one guitar tuned to Open G. Thanks so much for all the excellent lessons over the years, you are a great teacher.
Great job on one of the simplest, yet complex, guitar riffs of all time! You're a phenomenal teacher Justin.

I love all your tutorials, you are an excellent Guitarr instructor.
Justin consistently provides some of the best lessons on youtube - I encourage people to donate even just a few dollars.

Thank you again for yet another amazing lesson Justin 🙏 so grateful for your time that you give for all of us.
Jason
For 'open mic' sessions I've got to play it and sing as well. So a simplified version is the thing. Thanks Jason
You certainly know your way around the guitar Justin. Thanks for sharing .
I'm 50 now and still play. In my gigs younger years never learned different tunings. Thanks again sparking my interest.
Just stumbled on this and I must say I am impressed with the information here and I will be back often thank you sir very much

Agree! Justin teaches Best Honky Tonk Woman Version for capturing that “real bluesey rock Feel”
Excellent lesson and good beginner primer for fingerpicking. Learning guitar has been a senior moment entirely since I’m starting at 62+.
I thought I'd never hack this , but you make it so transparent it was no problem. Great stuff!
Great tutorial and playing once again. Keep 'em coming Justin. ... and thanx.
Excellent playing!
Best of all the lessons on YT. Thanks Justin.
