I know this video was made an entire year ago... but I have a supporting detail concerning the whole "The Adventurer is a conscious being you're controlling" bits. I played a lot of adventure mode in high-school before I knew all of the speech mechanics, and would just go around slaughtering people. Looking at my inventory, I always noticed that there were/are tears in my adventurer's eyes whenever he did this. He didn't want to kill the people he did, but he was powerless to stop it. He was a slave to Armok.

YES!!! The adventurer has a personality, thoughts, and feelings like the dwarves in fortress mode.
There are a lot of mechanics around it, and part of that can be fully customized with your values. Most meaningful is [FOCUSED!]
If you play into the personality of your adventurer, you become focused and things just work out easier for you. I think it's like 150% stat boosting, and makes you better during fights and conversations.

    About a rain phobia
It makes sense for dwarfs to be instinctively afraid of rain. Well, not "rain", but rather "a large amount of water falling from above".
If you are living in what exactly is a mine, and water suddenly starts falling on you from above, it most likely means that you will be dead in the matter of time. Dead as in "we did not know that there is a big body of water above our ceiling and now it is going to breach in and flood the corridors".

Obok came into existence with Adventure mode's wrestling becoming complicated enough that you could gouge eyes using your thumbs along with the ability to modify raw files to accommodate different body structures. By simply adding something that could gouge and something that could be gouged, Obok was made manifest. The original post was not just a one-paragraph shock content post either, it was several pages worth written with that particular detail you see from time to time on the Chans. There are still mods out there using the 'Obok Technique' along with plenty of text-based titillation. Obok really just took the cake by going way too far and causing a severe backlash for it.

Here’s something fun I did a few years ago. The demons who rule over goblin civilizations can be recruited in adventure mode after you find their slab, then brought back to your fortress and become friendly members of your civ by using dfhack to bodyswap and have them ask to become a militia dwarf. If you get lucky and your world has a male/female pair of the same demon type, you can start a demon family. They almost always have triplets once a year who are born as full adult size demons with really high level skills. Make them into armor smiths and they can make armor that fits their enormous bodies. Also, the original demons are very likely to be elected as mayor since they have spent all of history working on their social skills. Once adventure mode is out I might do this again so I can make a watchable video.

Surprised Planepacked didn't make the list. The legendary statue said to depict the entire history of the world. One player on the forums had a dwarf enter a mood, and instead of stopping at around five materials they just kept bringing more and more stone to the workshop and ended up making a statue using a ridiculous amount of stone, with each piece giving it another detail be it some of those menacing spikes Dwarves love, simple geometric shapes, or a depiction of an event in the fortress/civilization's history. It was worth a lot of dwarfbux for something made primarily out of basic rock types that don't have that high of a starting value to then multiply, which is why myself and many others would keep value raw ores near our workshops not flagged as forbidden, but also not assigned for use in normal masonry or smelting, so that when a dwarf made a mood artifact requiring stone the closest stones to grab would be valuable metal ores that would make the most out of the legendary value multiplier, but planepacked was extremely valuable for a statue made out of basic low value stone due to the sheer number of pieces used in its creation, and the amount used in its construction was so absurdly high its description was pages long and captured the imagination of forumgoers, as usually when there is a bug that results in something so extreme it is usually something multiple players have experienced shortly after a patch or modding attempt, while planepacked was an enigma with some questioning if it was the result of modding or hacking the game just to be able to allow this to happen.
However, since Planepacked managed to catch the attention of basically everyone active on the DF forums at the time, there was a community effort to replicate the bug that lead to this. I'm a bit hazy on the timeline but I know a method was discovered that allowed moody dwarves to bring a material to be used in their artifact without it being checked off of their list, allowing them to get more and more to make a super artifact, that I think was uncovered in the investigation (not 100% sure, may have been known about prior) but it required some precise micromanagement in order to manually confuse the game with each ingredient. Some thought that this was how Planepacked was created but the OP had stated that whatever bug caused this was unintentional, the dwarf kept grabbing more and more stone on their own, and given DF's history of amusing and strange bugs and OP being just as confused as us, the majority of us believed them as the game had enough crazy occurrences between unintended bugs, regular gameplay, and people openly sharing exploits that it just wasn't part of the forum culture at the time to misrepresent something for some temporary clout like is the case with much of the rest of the internet. So, the DF community discovered how to intentionally get moody dwarves to add extra ingredients to their artifacts, but in a way that required a lot of constant attention to the point that replicating something on the scale of Planepacked would just be exhausting, especially since once could get similarly valuable furniture by keeping high valuable materials close to the workshops specifically for moods, as it would take a crazy amount of pieces of cheap stone to match the value of a piece of ore, and there was still a mystery to solve.
It took some time, more than it usually took the DF community to replicate a bug, but someone eventually managed to do it. It was so long ago that I don't remember how to trigger the behavior of a moody dwarf automatically getting stuck in a loop of gathering more and more of a specific ingredient without intentional player intervention, madness, or death. Others tried it and made and shared their own super artifacts, but planepacked was the first, and for a while the only, and came about by accident, so even after others learned how to pull off the bug and had their dwarves create similarly complex artifacts out of much more valuable materials than cheap common stone, with insane amounts of ingame value that made Planepacked'a price seem relatively tiny, in the hearts of the community Planepacked was special and went down in DF history as a truly legendary creation.

“Goblin Fortress” is the name of a current overhaul mod, but also refers to an older mod removed from the forums. The mod in question started out normal but became increasingly degenerate, the thread filled up with furries, and it ended up adding things like dildos and whatnot. No screenshots of the thread exists but there is an article about it on 1d4chan of some erotic story someone wrote of the mod. Maybe it’s better left forgotten.
As for 2014 cut features, this is probably referring to tavern games. DF2014 was originally going to have randomly generated card and drinking games that the dwarves would play in your taverns, but Toady decided to postpone this to a later date.

The reason x is a shortcut for building up/down stairs is that X is a combination of the > and < glyphs, that denote stairs going down and up respectively. The up/down staircase in the ASCII interface is represented by the X glyph.
The old interface was actually much more accessible in some respects than the new mouse-driven interface. The player had full control over which tasks the dwarves would do, the workshops could have skill brackets set in addition to allowing a specific dwarf to work there, the military uniforms were editable. Doing stuff with the keyboard was actually much faster with a little bit of practice, and you had all shortcuts displayed for easy reference.

Very late, but on ''Ice oceans are hostile''...
This entry most likely refers to a bug that happens at polar oceans. Specfically on top of oceanic ice sheets. It might still happen, but I haven't checked. Here is how it works. The presence of ice on top of the water doesn't prevents the game from generating waves. This creates water mist. Due to the way these generate and how wonky old DF code tends to work, some of it spontaneously appears on top of the ice. This causes it to instantly freeze due to the extreme low tempature, instantly forming massive walls of ice when you don't look at their direction. These walls gradually close in on you and then entomb you as you walk around there in adventure mode.
It is akin to a creepypasta if you ask me. Imagine walking around on an empty plain of ice, then you look back to see a wall of ice that wasn't there... And another when you look forward again. Left, right, same. And suddenly, you are encased in ice...

This is a bit late, but i am not suffering through university advanced math classes to not try to explain the math thing:
there are multiple ways to measure distance in normal spaces (non mathematical definition, i.e. stuff that behaves like we usually think it should; if i get into Hausdorff spaces and T4, great names tho "normal space" "completely normal space" and "perfectly normal space", "sober spaces", "polish spaces"). The two most common ones are the euclidian distance (straight line; sqrt(a^2, + b^2) ) or the manhatten distance (how many city block lengths youd have to walk on a square grid; a+b).
There also are different kinds of spaces, for which different rules apply than the ones wed usually think. It is hard to describe any examples, since its pretty esoteric if you arent familiar with topology and such, so the best i can do is say something along the lines of imagine stuff like hyperspace/subspace from your favorite scifi franchise which doest follow our normal rules, or how stuff like spacetime warping and creating wormholes doesnt really fit with how we imagine space works, to get a tiny fraction of what is possible. ill append some examples of basic properties that arent common to all spaces wed consider in mathematics.
what are minimal surfaces? The basic analogy is with literal surfaces in 3d space (where the name comes from), a soap bubble on a wire is a classic example, as it will contract to have the minimum surface area given its volume and the constraints of the wire. it is more general than that, since self intersecting objects etc are also allowed.
Now what is his math paper about? Given some weird space (think lovecraftian mind melting stuff) what kind of things do we have to know, like how distance is defined, (and what properties the distance has), for there to exist minimal surfaces in that space. He proved that the general idea of those surfaces exists in more complicates spaces, even where stuff we take for granted is a lot more whacky
examples of stuff we take for granted that isnt in general for spaces:
    - there exists a notion of distance
    - if you have two empty areas and add them together, you get an empty area (basically 0+0 = 0)
    - you being able to tell apart two distinct points (T0)
Those arent representative of the kinds of spaces hed be looking at, but a slight taste of the weirdness.

About his dissertation, from my understanding he basically proved that there are "ranges" for minimal distances in larger dimensions and he mixed it with the taxi problem. Like imagine you have 2D, you have 2 points on a graph, the shortest line between those two points would be the "minimal distance" it would have "minimal parameters" to get from points a to b. Imagine you added an obstacle in the middle of those 2 points, now you can't go from a to b in a straight line, so now the minimal distance is higher and so are the minimal parameters. The taxi problem is something that stems from US cities being built on a grid system. So if you imagine a 4x4 grid. You can't go from the top left to bottom right corner in a straight line anymore. You need to go down, right, down, right, down right, etc. From the sounds of it, he took that principle and just applied it to higher dimensions I'm guessing the main thing is he created a generalisation for it mathematically that you can get from point a to b with "obstacles" (this is a guess but I'm working off of this since he mentioned the nyc taxi cab problem) in like a 50 dimensional system (once your beyond 3 dimensions don't even try to visualise it, it's just maths and mathematical principles at play) the "minimal surface" is often used in linear algebra as a way of denoting a plane. Imagine you have a cube. You slice that cube diagonally so that it goes perfectly through 2 top corners and 2 bottom corners on the opposite end, and that "slice" , namely, the shape you would draw from that "slice" would be the surface (also called a plain) from the opposing diagonal corners. I imagine he created minimal plains from point a to b bascially or at least showed there is always a lower bound for the existence of one. So returning to our 4x4 grid example, you can think of it in x,y terms. You need to go from (0,0) to lets say (4,-4) 1 across, -1, down, 1 across, -1 down etc, and then you can draw the space for example (1,0) to (3,-4) between these two points can be a representation of the range of solutions of getting from a to b in a straight line. There's a lot of guess work from me here just to fill in the gaps of what he mentioned.
I am by no means a mathematician but I do computer science and had to do a bunch of these things. I'm possibly even better suited to talk about this than a mathematician would be.

Mist Generators - Tier 2 (probably): Dwarves hate rain, but they love being misted on! Therefore alot of harebrained constructions have been developed by the community to make their dwarves happy, especially since earlier versions had dwarves get mad much easier. By building an elaborate contraption to drop water and pump it back up, it would generate mist (most often in a tavern!) and increase the mood of the dwarves in your fortress.

11:10 The funniest bit is that any normal in-game theory about the creation of the first anvil has holes in it; eventually, you're left with 'gift from Armok' because that's the only one not directly contradicted by some bit of lore:
    - strange mood. While it is possible to get a metal anvil as a result of a strange mood (I personally got an artifact adamantine anvil in 2023), completing that strange mood requires the existence of a forge in the first place. And, if an artifact anvil were created in the history of the world, then that anvil would be found in Legends mode. No such luck.
    - made from a more primitive precursor. Ok, so where is the recipe for that precursor? There is no other instance of dwarves forgetting a crafting recipe, and even worse, all dwarves come equipped with full knowledge of every recipe in existence; they can do everything, their experience just dictates how fast they do so, or how much the end product sucks.
    - gift from gods. Gods do gift physical objects at times, but only in highly specific circumstances, and only slabs: death gods create slabs with the secrets of life and death for their necromancers, and demons who pact with gods get bound via a slab with their True Name written on it. It's not completely unrealistic that the god of mountains/ores/metals/smithing/whatever did craft an anvil... but again: this is an artifact; where is it in Legends?
    - gift from Armok. By simple process of elimination, this is the only remaining option. Yeah, sure, when Armok built this world, He also built a 'standard issue' fortress, which contained at least one anvil. This anvil is not an artifact, it's just a shitty no-quality anvil, so it's not in Legends. (and the 'standard issue' fort also might explain why all auto-generated forts are so similar, too).
22:10 Also worth mentioning that it's possible to become a were-wagon; though I recall the user who did the experiments used DfHack to turn his/her adventurer into a were-creature in the first place. It wasn't a particularly exciting adventurer; any attempt to move resulted in the 'wagon' getting scuttled.

    • @sungazercyan
      @sungazercyan  3 місяці тому +1

I remember that exact were-wagon post actually, down to the part about being violently scuttled any time they attempted to move. Funny stuff.
About the first point though there is a reasonable amount of gameplay-story segregation we can do to make assumptions about things like “dwarves not remembering pre-metal anvils” or “gods gifting anvils to a long forgotten civ” in the same way that we just normally don’t think about how anvils came into existence in the first place. I think the only real answer is “anvils have always existed because the game wouldn’t work without them” but everyone can make up their own fun headcanons for themselves.

Imo 3x3 stair designs are a result of workshops being 3x3. You can just come off your stair with a 3 wide hallway and then plop a shop in the middle of it. If you make it 4 then it's off center. Once you start making spaces for the shops, they're most likely going to be 3 wide or an odd number greater than 3, so that they can be centered. Hallways and stairs that are 2x2 or 4x4 just don't fit with the workshops unless you arrange them double wide.

I can comment a bit on the Banach space one.
Numbers are very simple mathematical objects, and many things about them are taken for granted because they make sense. For example, if I ask "What's the length of 5?", you may just say "It's just 5". As you deal with more general mathematical objects, like functions or matrices of numbers, the notions of length, distance or even an operation like division stop making sense, and mathematicians need to redefine them in a different way if they want to use them.
A vector space is a set whose elements, whatever they may be, can be added together and multiplied by a number (for *some* addition and multiplication definition). A Banach space is a vector space that's complete (no "missing elements" after a number of operations are performed) and that has a norm (a norm is an operation that calculates the "length" of an element).
I don't know what a real flat chain is, unfortunately. :(

  • @masterzoroark6664

That's interesting take on elfs- not many fantasy settings make their elfs this strange, I guess the only setting close to this would be Dark Sun, but there elfs are nomadic people who never stop moving (even getting debufs and dying from depression if they are stopped from moving). The closer "fucked up" critters to DF elfs from Dark Sun would be Halflings- who are really disturbing cannibals in that setting.
For anyone uninitiated- Dark Sun is a DnD setting set in basically Connan the Barbarian mixed with Mad Max postapocalyptic world. The setting got disconnected from main current of magic and now the only way to cast spells is to sacrifice life around you- this includes you, plants, people, animals - and ended up with the planet becoming a massive desert. Also: the more magic you use the more you turn into a dragon of that setting which is a rather eldritch abomination creature rather than a standard scalie. Metal and wood are extremaly rare, water is a commodity and last cities are ruled by mage kings with an iron hand.

Anyhow, mathematically speaking the Manhatten distance is a trivially simple kind of calculation because ( a ) it will be correlated strongly with the Pythagorean theorem, because ( b ) Diagonal "straight line" distance doesn't work on a grid. Lucky for us though, we don't even need to work out what C is when squared since we only need to know how many blocks Forward/Back and how many Left/Right. In other words, -if- When the Hypotenuse is 5 the Manhatten distance is 7 (A + B).

    • @jamespfp
      @jamespfp 3 місяці тому

^^ It also bears mentioning that while the "Simple" example will be a grid with square tiles, there is no reason why the tiles must be square with 90 degree angles. A grid with hexagonal tiles will also have a formula for working out Manhatten distance, usually by figuring out the absolute distance between the co-ordinates of Tile A and Tile B, and adding them in exactly the same fashion.

It's a novel written by Neal Stephenson (who is sometimes referred to as a cyberpunk writer) called "REAMDE" published in 2011. I shouldn't spoil the novel but hey, if it had appeared on something like this Iceberg explaining its presence would require at least some synopsis of the plot and/or characters. Suffice it to say one of the protagonists is a software developer who has created an MMORPG that mashes up World of Warcraft (for the MMO part) with Dwarf Fortress for the insanely detailed procedural world generation, way more detailed than anything Mojang / Notch ever did. Stephenson, in my opinion, was using Dwarf Fortress for a very specific reason.

What is it? Cryptocurrency.
"Ready Player One" was therefore a likely attempt to "scoop" anyone who has the rights to "REAMDE", and was actively trying to draw attention away from the obvious crossover point between the virtual MMO world and the real world.

It is not uncommon for many types of sea creatures to be quite literally cooked by burying them for a period of time and allowing the process of rotting to ferment the meat. Three cultures as convenient examples: Arctic dwelling cultures like the Inuit, also the Norwegians, and the Japanese all have types of fermented fish, sea mammals, and sea birds. Another example from antiquity which is much closer to "meat alcohol" though is a fish sauce from Roman times called "Garum" which, to the best of my knowledge wasn't consumed as a liquor on its own but was used as a method of flavoring other foods.

Human consumption of blood rarely involves a fermentation process, though. Milk, on the other hand, certain can and has been fermented.
