So glad you saved the original art. Its like watching arcade archaeology. Would be cool to see a Double dragon restore. But i really like the MK in a taito cabinet it gives it some history. That Double dragon bezel art is a cool discovery, i think it would be cool if you used that instead.
doogan chode i stand corrected. I didn’t know you had all the mortal Kombat machines before I made my comment. It’s not like something unique is special. I hope you can forgive me
This was rather inspiring. Nice job. And even if you don't turn it back into a Double Dragon, you still have something unique that represents the machine's entire history.
I think I'd rather see it turned back into a Double Dragon cab, honestly. That button layout is wack for MK. I'm getting finger cramps just imaging doing Sub-Zero's slide on that thing. lol
Can always make one. I know its not quite the same as having an old school cab, but using a PI can put together a MAME cab. Just Did one a few weeks ago, did it in a Neo-Geo colors. Can get cheap buttons with sticks and encoders on Amazon for about 50. Was a fun little project, just find better plans than I had...made for a lot more work lol.
@@thomasham130 I have considered building one with premium sticks and buttons. I am working on my soldering skills at the moment. At some point I’ll learn a bit about wood work (not that I believe it requires a ton of knowledge with all the patterns out there) then I’ll get with a friend who knows how to do front ends and all the roms. I kinda need to wait until I get a bigger space to make my vision come true. Thanks for the encouragement.
@@joshmiller887 Cool. You don't need a huge amount of space. Mine only takes up 28x24. That is with a 27" screen. With the USB encoders you don't need to solder at all. And if you want to go lazy you can look up PI images for a make and size. I.E PI 4 128gb image and find a link for downloading. Can always go bar top as well if space is a real problem.
I built an arcade machine completely from scratch and I made to resemble a Neo Geo MVS. However, I designed it to do A LOT more than an original MVS. I soldered the buttons to various controller boards. That makes it compatible with ALL consoles, both old and new!
Dave, great video! I appreciate how you went all in to preserve the Taito artwork. I look at these machines as works of art to be preserved so I hope you get around to making it a Double D once again. I look forward to getting into the arcade hobby when work settles down in a few years. I want to restore cabinets to their original glory! Have fun with the machine and take care! P.S. I use to have an '04 Sentra, no shame ;)
love how you restored what was left to restore it it weird to see taito on the mk cab but cool to hear it was a double dragon one :-D so much history to this machine
Cinemassacre was my introduction to the youtube gaming community. All these years later Game Dave is my favorite ( and the game chasers) Thanks Dave your the man.
I was wondering why the shape of the cabinet looks familiar. Back in the 3rd grade coming home from school i would hit the corner store to play some Double Dragon! Nice video.
This guy is the epitome of a nerd. The look, the movements, the way he talks. Even the bad humour that only he finds funny. I didn't know there were any left in the wild these days
Awesome video Dave! Its really cool that you chose to take the harder path and restore the cab. Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet but WD-40 takes stickers off with ease. Good luck on what ever you decided to do with the cab.
Good on you restoring this. It looks awesome. If you ever wanted to make this a dedicated double dragon, a marquee and pcb wouldn’t be hard to come by. Either way, glad you’re keeping it original 👍🏿
A Double Dragon cabinet is great for swapping out jamma boards. You’ll notice on the front of your cab at the bottom there is a slide out drawer and originally that is where the double dragon jamma board would be located. If that’s the case it’s easy to swap out different jamma boards like changing a nintendo nes cartridge. The challenge is someone could have rewired your cab and mounted the MK boards and jamma harness inside the cabinet instead of using that slide out drawer. Given that the MK boards take up more space that’s probably what they did. Nice job on saving the double dragon art!
Don't worry Game Dave, I'll never unsub :) And I'll always watch you, you're one of my favourites. Speaking of favourites, Double Dragon is one of my favourite games EVER. My DDII NES cart is one of my prized possessions. PLEASE! Turn this back into a Double Dragon cab! You could even dual boot it, just rig up the screen art so it can be easily flipped around and you can play MK at the 'flip' of a switch and cardboard xD What a cool find!
Fun tip, stickers can be removed a lot easier and percisely with heat, like blasting it with a hair drier or heat gun and just using your fingernail. They typically come off clean with no residue if they arent super old and gunky.
My first cab was an empty Donkey Kong that I turned into a Fix it Felix replica Mame cab. the guy that sold it to me had a full arcade in his garage and told me it definitely wouldn't be my last... Then I found a 4 slot Neo Geo big red that I restored, then I got a cocktail that I put a 60 in 1 board in. I haven't really gotten anything since then, but if the right Candy cab came up for sale locally....
Ahhh entire days spent scraping paint and stickers off cabinets is something I've done all too often. I do love doing cabinet restorations! Usually I'm stripping paint off metal parts and getting the rust of to give them a coat of paint to get them looking close to new. I don't like completely renewing everything on a cab though, I like them to look like they've had a bit of a life. Often I find some peoples collections of absolutely pristine, geniune dedicated cabs, while lovely, don't represent what I grew up with at all! Which was a mish-mash of tatty converted old machines and generic cabs made by local firms. I'd say keep it as it is, it's a piece of history. Not everything needs to be dedicated!
If you're to keep this a Mortal Kombat, PLEASE keep the Taito stuff! It really says a lot about the history of the machine, and I think makes it even more interesting than regular ones and other conversions
At first I didn't click this video, but then later I did and realized it was from THE Game Dave! I was dissapointed at myself I hadn't clicked the first time!
Should try to source a candy cab. The ultimate jewel in arcade video game collection. Then you can convert the cabinet into an emulation station, customize it with your fav sanwa/seimitsu/hayabusa button/sticks and you are set for life. 100% guaranteed to satisfy guests and yourself with any type of arcade itch.
is it the future yet ..... i'm kind of excited i hope you end up with both machines in this process, mortal kombat arcade brought back some crazy memorys, just like you i was more of a MK fan then a SF fan back in the day. and double dragon iv never got to see the arcade of that but i used to rock it so much on the old NES so would be cool to see it in action on the OG arcade. keep up the great videos dave, and heres hoping for your future arcade setup.
One of my first cabinets circa 1999 was a street fighter that I turned into a mame cabinet then later restored back into what it originally was, A robotron
Dude i enjoy so much your videos. I hope you can restore that DD cabinet to its former glory, not that I am a nice man, just that I would love to see part two of this video for my personal amusement and....digital distraction.
You don’t have to adjust the horizontal coil. Should have pots on the monitor for that. Be sure to use tv adjustment tools. Also if you re I’ve the control panel art you might still have double dragon control panel artwork on there. It’s a slippery slope so enjoy. Also since it’s a jamma connector you can buy different jamma boards or even buy a multi board for it.
Monitor is a K7000 only pots for vertical size, V. position, and H position. The Midway Y boards tend to run video a bit large so there probably isn't anything to worry about monitor or chasis wise. Already have things in the works for everything else ;)
it's the gateway drug.. my first cabinet was a Robotron 2084 that had been converted to a Mortal Kombat I bought back in 2001. At one point I owned about 35 machines.. I'm down to about 10 now :)
Well that’s a neat restoration 😁👍. I’ve heard using lighter fluid and orange oil is a neat way to help remove stickers. Maybe try that the next time you do a restoration that involves removing stickers.
As an arcade collector, I wholeheartedly support your restoration efforts and slide into multiple arcade machine ownership. Just know something going in... if you buy a pinball machine, that's it, you're lost. No one owns just one pinball machine. And those are a lot trickier to repair and a heck of a lot more expensive.
Did you try looking under the vinyl of the control panel to see if original art was still there? And check behind the marquee for the original that's what I did and I lucked out I was given a few machines from a local vendor that was just throwing away a ton of games from his wherehouse at the dump! :( some in slightly used condition one of them I got was a deer hunter USA converted Z/dynamo style Street Fighter 2 cabinet and underneath and behind was the original art for Fighters History even had the instruction manual and 2 player 6 button holes layout hiding as well I didn't even have to drill so much fun. But my main goal and passion in arcades is to have a MK cabinet preferably not converted but hey I'll take what I can get. Slippery is right man.
One time I had a mortal Kombat that was converted into a neo geo. I sold the neo geo & bought every tng episode on laserdisc with the profits, turned the rest of it into a home cabinet
There is always room for more cabinetry. Kev is a valuable wellspring of insight in this regard. Did you two compete in Mortal Kombat? He is plenty skilled at rear end kicking.
My high ass came back I CAME BACK for a second viewing. Come on man, we NEEDs that parts 2 you know! You going for that double Deez? You gonna use one of those beepboops I sent you on the facedbooks?
Thank you for making this video. I think you have opened a rabbits hole and probably you’ll start buying Japanese candy cabs. You collect famicom boxed games. I am calling it.

I kinda want to see Dave grow a mustache like that now.
Same :D
It's creepy and wonderful
Wow, this is even more special than having a straight up MK machine.

The Taito / MK combo looks great imo. Authentic and the side art is almost mint.
As someone who's done arcade restoration/conversion, that's great work! the sideart was restored beautifully.
That's epic. I hope to see this project grow and spawn two cabinets.
Great reatoration project! Can't wait for part 2 getting digitally distracted :-D

Great find Dave and story. That certainly took a lot of work to get that paint off and stickers. Breaks and snacks much needed.

Funniest shit I'd ever seen
Great rescue... I’d leave it “as is”... there’s history in the conversion
I agree that it is a classic but the MKII cabinet would be a dream come true for me as well. Great video!
Dang! that was pretty satisfying to watch.
I love how he ended the video with the main move in video game history that birthed the ESRB.
Haha, I was just introduced your channel. Love your style, bro.
TNT Amusements will help you restore your MK machine, Dave. They'll even restore the Double Dragon cabinet where the MK later put on.

The screen graphic. Just flip it to the dragon side and add the MK yellow instructions to it. Double Dragon / Mk dragon crossover is aesthetic.

Maybe easier, but not any faster. Still a lot of work to sit there heating up 20 year old stickers.
