I love this -- at the beginning, Tom says, "Me and Del were singing . . . little runaway." He's referring to Del Shannon's song, "Runaway," playing on the car radio. A classic 1961 song.

Also, Mike wrote a bunch of the songs - the music was there, Petty added lyrics. It was quite a team. Mike Campbell wrote "boys of summer" in fact....Petty didn't want it, so Campbell gave it Don Henley, who wrote lyrics to Campbell's music and the rest is history.

Tom Petty met Elvis when he was 11 years old and was inspired to become a singer. This song represents chasing that dream.
This was from the "Full Moon Fever" album from 1989. Jeff Lynne co produced this album and played several instruments on it.

Saw them do this just a few rows from the stage, Mike Campbell was on fire that night, he also did an instrumental segment with a surf guitar tribute to Dick Dale that was amazing. You "Boomers" need to stop fetishizing the 70's, and 80's as if rock died after those decades were over because rock and roll never died, its alive and kicking, and even more albums are being released today than any other time. And no, I am not talking about the souless radio stuff lacking riffs/solos, I am talking about stuff you need to find for yourself under the hundreds of rock labels still alive today, and independent artists releasing on places like Bandcamp.

Scary and knocked out the power for about an hour, rained like heck then restarted the show in MUD! Mind you, most of that venue was not covered and turned into a mud pile in the rain. This whole album, "Full Moon Fever" is chock full of hits. Not only did Jeff Lynne co-write and produce; but George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jim Keltner (from The Travelling Wilburys) also make appearances on the album. I did not set out on a road trip for 30 years without starting on this song (track 5 on the album) and then resetting to the beginning and playing it all the way through.
A fun thing to hear on the CD version of the album (which came out in 1989 when CDs were still relatively new) is the message that plays after this song--Tom Petty speaking--"Hello CD listeners. We've come to the point in this album where those listing on tape or record will have to stand up--or sit down--and turn over the record or tape. In fairness to those listeners we'll now take a few seconds before we begin side two...[pause]...Thank you. Now here's side two."

This video is my Top 5 music videos of all time. It's based on the comic called "Little Nemo In Slumberland". I remember watching this video all the time on MTV, back in the day, when I was 17 years old, in high school. #memories

He had me at Damn the Torpedoes. I highly recommend She's a Woman in Love (It's Not Me). So many great songs. That was a reference to Del Shannon, Little Runaway. Not sure if you have reacted to that song.

This is my absolute favorite Tom Petty song! It is so much about mindset, pressing forward, they even have the passage which alludes to the "dark night of the soul" which comes before your manifestation when he says "the last three days the rain was unstoppable, it was always cold, no sunshine". And that guitar shred at the end illustrates that internal Umph motivation you need to keep going. Can't you just imagine blasting this on the open road? It's iconic. Thanks, guys for choosing this one.

Great album. Tom does a great cover of The Byrds song "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" on this album Full Moon Fever. The Byrds and Bob Dylan were big influences on Tom. The Byrds and Dylan changed Rock in 1965 by electrifying Folk music and creating the Folk Rock and Country Rock genres.
