This Seiko Superior is, in my opinion, the best and coolest watch you featured on your channel so far. If I was to pick one watch from the hundreds seen in your hands, it would be, hands down, this Seiko. SM homage is still great, I like it a lot, but the original is absolutely amazing! Thanks for exposing this hidden treasure to us!
@@ilikewatches Sorry to bother you mate but I've fallen in love with the 48838001 and I'm planning to get one soon, your video convinced me. I've found a couple that seem to be in good condition and are selling for significantly less because they either don't come with a bracelet or come with a non-original bracelet which aren't very nice. So I'd like to know what bracelet you've got on yours and how much it costs? Yours really matches as the 5 rectangular cut-outs that connect each link match with the 5 rectangular raised indices that repeats around the watch dial. Thanks man.
I bought the San Martin when it first came out. Really a beautiful watch. I've also been looking at vintage Seiko Twin Quartz models, which are fantastic.
Brilliant video Gary, I have 3 'vintage' Seiko's, my dad's quartz and two automatics I was bought growing up in the 70's, they still work great and although small by comparison to today's sizes, I love wearing them and reminiscing.
Very cool. Thank you for showing both to us. Proxima has cheaper version they recently had on sale for $130, and I’m kicking myself for not getting it (it’s like $185 now, which I can afford but the principle of it...) I plan on getting it one day and throwing a Watch Gecko vintage bracelet on it. Thanks again!
hi this watch was made in september 1976 going by the serial number great looking watch, great video as always , im a big king seiko fan and they had some killer quartz watches in this time period. keep up the good work
I absolutely love Seiko's old vintage quartz watches, my favorite is the grand quartz snowflake with gold color. The case on it is beat up on the corners and some other places and it didnt have original bracelet, but it still looks good. I even had the movement serviced by a guy called Andy, who specializes on japanese vintage quartz watches and after half a year she is still running perfectly, even more accurately than my other quartz watches
Bought the SM after seeing your review and almost flipped it on eBay. Was torn as needed the cash for another watch but as no takers for the price I was asking, am genuinely glad it's still in my collection and will keep for a while longer.
Wow. I’ve never seen that Seiko before or heard of the superior range. Thanks for sharing. You do a great job of bringing really different watches to your channel. Clearly a very knowledgeable watch nerd! 😁
I love those 70s Seiko Quartzes. It really was a golden age of technology and design. Like that SM have homaged it, with reservations. I doubt most buyers will be aware of the OG, which is a great pity.
What a great find with the Seiko Superior! Well done SM for producing a classy stylish watch. Tonight, I watched a video by a chap called Mike, the channel is called This Watch, That Watch about whether Rolex et al are a rip off. I thought the video might have been tongue in cheek, the more I watched, the more I could feel myself wanting to vomit. Everything he was saying, mostly about Rolex, made me think about how ridiculous the “luxury” watch market is. How pretentious we must all be going along with all the marketing and celebrity endorsements, that wearing that kind of watch would make one a winner, a success, someone to be admired and respected. It spoke to me of everything that’s wrong with the world. Thank goodness we have sensible reviewers like yourself, Russell, Jody, and many others, who show us that great watches don’t have to cost a lot of money.
The strap on that superior is from a King Seiko Vanac.. I have a couple of Vanacs & one has that same strap.. 70's Seiko are fantastic watches.. Thats a very pretty watch enjoy it..
Hey man great video. i got inspired by your video to buy myself one and I found the grand quartz on ebay with the 9943 movements ranging from 250 for scratched ones up to 1000 dollars for refurbished ones! I just wanted to ask are the refurbished ones worth these high prices or should I get the cheaper ones instead, because I have no experience on the prices of them. Thanks
Hi, I bought this SM 2 weeks ago with the metal bracelet thinking it was more interesting than the leather one. The watch is great but this bracelet is way too shiny. Is it possible to buy the leather one separately ? This distributor told me they dont sell it without the watch. Thank you.
Gary - the original’s hour markers are black onyx! I have one and it’s stunning to look at and stunning in its accuracy. Can’t believe you sold yours - a sad day when you packed it up? V best G
@@ilikewatches I did see it in your store - someone got a great deal but I feel for you - v sad! Still you only have to pay tax if you’ve made out like a bandit 😉 Just kidding - but thanks for funding all those schools and hospitals! G
So first you cost me money with an obsession with citizen Cosmotron watch (now own 6 lol ) and now I'm going to be buying Seiko superior 😂 I've been looking for a daily quartz and now I've found it !
That ‘toothy’ bracelet is actually perfect with those dial indices that get mirrored in this thing’s inner bezel . . . If you chose that bracelet yourself then you made an excellent choice.
@Seajay2016 ya that seems to be the main argument automotive guys give. I just feel like me and many people are used to seeing the ticking second hand with clocks at school and clocks in movies ect so we don't mind all that much? Like when I think of a clock or watch the ticking second hand is one of the main if not the main thing I think of. So maybe guys who are big on automatic watches and maybe a bit "snobby" feel they've been looking at quartz watches most there lives or for most there younger life's so its a natural step up to fall in love with automatic watches because it's classier and different. And I said snobby because it seems like auto guys use words like "hate" the seconds hand and make it to seem cheap. I guess I'm a bit biased alwell because I'm more of a quartz guy and prefer accuracy to looks but I do love both and at the end of the day we're all watch guys.
@@trevorgray4852 I don't mind quartz watches, but the watch feels lifeless when the second hand ticks, like the watch in school. 😅 I have two quartz movements (marlin/mecca quartz))which I love and Casio (1000w) which is my beater watch. I would 💯 recommend a mecca quartz, because the second hand doesn't tick.
I bought one when they first came out and its an amazing watch. I end up selling because it was jsut a bit small. Advertised at 36mm and the case is that size. Problem is that the case flares out and the bezel is closer to 34-33mm making the watch look smaller than 36mm. And i have an average size wrist.
That Seiko is something else a gorgeous piece ,the san martin is nice as well but I,m not sure about the bracelet that's a lot of polishing .on the leather strap it looks a lot better
There were quite a few HAQ watches made that were accurate to under 10s per year. Didn’t omega make a mega quartz watch as well that was accurate to under 1s per year? Then there are still longines, accurist and eta based watches like certinas available today.
Sea-gull movements are very good but I find it best if you send it to the watchmakers for a cleaning because I've heard horror stories of debris, fingerprints and machining marks on parts. Brr!
If you buy an expensive or cheap quartz problem is the dah of technidal problem, nobkdg will repair it,if its old you dont find thepiece for repair,if its new they change all the mouvment en cost a lot,an automatique could be repair...i think
Seiko quartz watches from the 70s are really nice but they can be heartbreaking. If the movement goes it'll be tough to get parts- lot's of searching for donors high and low. Quartz watches are considered cheap throwaways for the most part but when they first came out, they were revolutionary. "You mean it just runs for five years on it's own?!?!" My father got one in 1977 and I'm sure his engineering side loved the high tech nature of it.
That San Martin looks great, only one thing wrong with San Martin, they don't make bracelets that fit my 9 inch wrist, usually their bracelets are Hobbit sized. :( And NOPE you cannot buy loose extra links... Sadly.. I tried,...

The hour markers on the seiko are amazing, whoever designed it did a fantastic job.
More vintage Seiko!!

Super nice watch! Thanks for reviewing this!
Thats a great looking watch.
Wish SM made a gold version of this.
I like these watches, both of them! But the San Martin is so much better on it's strap. That shiny bracelet is an eyesore!
Yes, I agree, the bracelet is not the best sadly
@@ilikewatches A jeweler could brush the links for not much money.
stunning watch
That watch is really beautiful.
What a great looking watch. Shame San Martin didn't use a quartz, that would have been a killer combo
This thing is gorgeous.
Great video! I love, love, love vintage Seiko!
yup - they're great
I have an inbound Proxima that resembles those beautiful Seiko Superiors…putting it on a metal bracelet to further capture that mid/late 70s vibe.
Dear GOD that Seiko is beautiful. That bracelet looks original, the 5 links matches the 5 pronounced indices perfectly.

The bracelet though! 😍
Before this I saw the San Martin in same design... 2 3 yrs back
That ‘toothy’ bracelet is actually perfect with those dial indices that get mirrored in this thing’s inner bezel . . . If you chose that bracelet yourself then you made an excellent choice.
The glory days of Seiko. We ain’t getting this type of build and look from them anymore.
Does it still maintain that accuracy today? How accurate is it now?
Very, it was serviced
I just pitched a specht and sohne . And the finishing is on Par with San Martin that’s just my opinion.
5 seconds per year is absolutely crazy! With quartz accuracy, it does make you question why in the hell do we continue buying mechanical watches?!
I know and to think that was 50 years ago….
Hate how the second hand moves..
Marketing and emotions… duh 🫠

Very nice to be sure but I have two words to trump your Seiko & that is `Citizen Chronomaster` 😁
I wish San Martin releases a 40mm version.
Same layout as my Pulsar 2001 quartz...

Shiny and beautiful, indeed!

I'm really not interested in quartz but that's a nice watch. I wouldn't want one but i can see the draw.
Could you please tell us the model number for the San Martin?
I have the Pulsar, black not white but same layout..
How do you call this seiko bracelet?
How do u shorten the san martin 37 mm bracelet
Now I want to know what the original strap looked like
It'd be a stunning watch, were it not for the DikinBaus logo in the bottom half of the dial above Superior.
I passed on an early Superior. I still hate myself for letting it go.
Shame….
that looks like a killer, too bad it ticks.
The San Martin one, i never thought i can want it even more but here they are with that bracelet

For me, the real spiritual successor to the Seiko Superior is not a Seiko. It's the Citizen 0100, powered by light, with +/- 1 second per year.
Everything looks nice on it, except the hands that are too thin and flimsy and also the logo that looks like a rude drawing.
These superiors almost never have the original bracelet. I own one without it as well. it’s extremely frustrating that they are so unattainable.
Mechanical watches are the ICE cars of the future, not efficient so nostalgic
Everything about this timepiece just makes my pants tight. 🥵
Still not at Casio God tier❤

AWESOME! Thanks for watching
Seiko are not worth, they are just popularized by the bloggers that's where a considerable amount of their money goes . ..
Not all content creators get paid…yes many do and sadly some lie about it but I turned down the one free watch Seiko offered and I never accept cash.
Superior Seiko? I don’t think so, you need to spend Grand Seiko money to get good quality control
My multiband 6 g shock is more accurate
Listen. These designs don't inspire. They look generic. In fact, there are much, much cheaper Seikos that look way better.
