the green triangle is zongzi, a traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo leaves, usually eaten during Dragon Boat Festival. :)
Dumpling is actually the wrong name. Dumpling is dough made with flour, for instance Jiaozi, or Wontons, or Xiaolongbao are dumplings. Zongzi is considered to be sticky rice, much like sushi rice or rice cake.
I feel Both are pretty excellent. I’m a half korean and Chinese and been in Walmart in the shanghai, Seoul and usa. My experience is that Seoul and shanghai may have more alternative and product as the American. Also that it’s way more fun and better air quality inside the market. But I do think Americans product is 100% safe. I hate conflicts and I really are surprised that you are respecting other cultures instead of blaming.
Yeah but American Walmarts have that WTF entertainment in people watching. Where else in the world where you get to see a 60 year old man wear netted stockings in heels or an obese woman in nothing but a bed sheet and flip flops riding a rascal? 😖
@3:25 those green things are sticky rice cover by leaf. The one folded at an angle are sticky rice, while the one folded flat are plain rice. And inside the rice are usually little bit of fatty meat like precook bacon, some beans, some red dye port and other ingredients. It is really good, you should definitely try it.
Green Triangles are 粽子(zongzi, rice and meat or other ingredients wrap around by Reed leaves, most are pork flavours and Bean paste flavours),one of the traditional food to eat during 端午节 (Dragon Boat Festival), it is to memorise someone jump into river or something. Some of those are cooked and throw into rivers to let the fish eat them instead of his body or some story like that, now it is more of a tradition of families being together.
The pyramid shaped things rapped in bamboo leaves in the net are called zongzi 粽子,it’s made out of sticky rice and can either be filled with meat, egg, or red been paste. You should try it, it’s very good!
The “green triangles” at 3:20 are sweet rice with either sweet or savory fillings and wrapped in banana or lotus leaves and have been steamed. So they’re ready to eat after reheating (steamer or microwave) and they are awesome! There are many variants based on regions - different leaves, different fillings but they are the equal of comfort food. But Shanghai style is considered the best. Don’t leave Shanghai without trying them!
First time hear people say that "Green Triangle". That is 粽子, boil it in water for 15 mins or steam it for 30 mins, then, cut the outside string, open the leaf, then, you will see.
I enjoy hanging around in the supermarket every time I go back to China, but many large supermarkets have closed down in recent years due to the boom of online shopping, young people these days tend to buy almost everything online (via Taobao or Tmall), for many years we used to have 2 big supermarkets near our home in Beijing but they both closed down for good last year:(
I know about import tariffs, but here I specifically mentioned Tide and Pampers, both P&G products. Didn't look too much into it now, but I know P&G has production plants in China, correct me if I'm wrong. Therefore, I'm pretty sure these products were made in China, just as the Chinese brands in the category, and are just more expensive because of the brands. btw I wasn't completely serious saying that the quality must be the reason for the price difference, I just threw it out there that obviously the foreign product is more expensive for different reasons (tariffs, stronger brands), but actually I have no idea how good would the Chinese brands be.
It can be impossible to figure out wine prices. Some wines are only sold at auction and their prices are entirely a function of supply and demand. Wine is not a commodity like rice or soybean -- wine has snob-appeal.
Green triangular food is called 粽子, it's a festival food and people eat it on Duanwu festival (端午节) which is dedicated to celebrating an ancient patriotic poet.
i wish you were more adventurous trying out foods that you never had before, would have been more interesting of a video. like just buy a bunch of stuff, lay it out on a table and see whats in it or what it taste like. It would have been so much fun.
10 years ago I had be there shopping for my sister who lived in a nearby hospital. Since she passed away, I don't have enough courage to go there anymore.
This is pretty much the case especially in cities like Shanghai and Beijing. Grocery items cost almost as much as those in the US. Actually many of them of even more expensive than the U.S.. Cost of living in the first tier of cities is extremely unfordable for most of middle class people. I think the primary drive of the high cost is real estate prices. Today, a 100 square meters apartment in Shanghai may cost 1 to 1.5 million US dollars, depends on the location. If you go to a smaller city, things will be totally different. but in short, cost of living is roaring everywhere in China.
Interesting to see what a Walmart looks like in China. A couple of times in Guangzhou I went to an AEON and freaked out on the meat and seafood section
the 500g thing is a more traditional unit called jin/斤,stemming from the ancient weighing system in use over the millennia before western influence. kind of like the feet/pound system for the ex-colonies.
That Mickey one is not snack, it is Zongzi. A special food we eat during dragon boat festival. But, anyway, it is weird to pack them in a Mickey bag :D

Shanghai became your favourite place in the world without the food included even. :) You might need some food guide next time you come here, the right choice of food will blow your mind. BTW, you should check another UA-camr, Food Ranger's vlog, it shows a bit the depth of Chinese food.

Zongzi 粽子 come in a variety of flavors sweet with red bean paste and dried fruit to salty type with preserved meats and peanuts. I am curious what city was this store located. Very large selection of items.
The green triangles are called Zongzi 粽子, meat filled rice snacks wrapped in bamboo leaves which are steamed before eating. It's eaten during the Dianwu festival, also known as the Dragonboat festival, to commemorate an ancient government official and poet called Qu Yuan, who wrongfully got expelled from imperial court due to conspiracy by rival ministers and was sent back to his hometown. He committed suicide by drowning himself in the river, when he got news that his country has fallen into enemy hands. Qu Yuan is known to be a patriotic and well respected man. Villagers in an attempt to search for his body took wooden sticks and splashed them in the water to scare away the fish also they threw rice in the water in order to lure fish away of not eating his remains. Hence the tradition came to existence of eating Zongzi and Dragonboat races with the paddles symbolizing scaring away the fish.

Your videos are always entertaining to watch. I have one advice, if you don't mind, is not to move your camera so fast. For instance from 5:08 to 5:13, you moved too fast so that it's hard to watch. Thank you for sharing.
