  • 18-month-old Roi Yim, Melbourne Zoo’s only male calf has finally been introduced to his dad, 14-year-old Luk Chai. Both boys seemed keen to say hello, with Roi being almost brave enough to go and hang out with Luk Chai alone - although he quickly changed his mind and sought out mum Mali’s reassuring presence.

Why does Luk chi not have tusks

Thanks for the great question! Not all elephants develop tusks, and many Asian elephants only grow tiny “tushes” which are inch-long tusk-like growths which aren’t easily visible. Luk Chai is a healthy, virile elephant, even if he is naturally tusk-less! ☺️
