Here’s one of my all time favourite ride cymbals, the discontinued Sabian Phil Collins Signature 21” HH raw bell dry ride. I talk about it then play it!
The Sabian Raw Bell Dry rides are really fantastic! They work great in almost every circumstance. You can't go wrong with one! Fading Lights on We Can't Dance is one of my most favorite songs from any group. Phil totally unleashes in the latter half of the song, brilliant drumming!
I am a Paiste guy who believes Classic Signature Full Ride 22" and Signature Silver Mellow 21" are as perfect as rides get, that being said I do agree Sabian has some phenomenal rides, Todd Sucherman´s signature ride is also something else! Also agree on the ride-crash definition.
Sigh...I had a Silver Mellow years ago and I still regret trading it in to this day. I currently have a 22" Signature Mellow Ride and it comes fairly close to that character, it's just more lively.
I agree..a ride cymbal for riding and crash cymbals for crashing/accents. However I recently purchased a Meinl 22" 'Vintage Pure' light ride cymbal primarily because it has nice warm 'dry' ride sound with a lot of stick definition but also because it crashes very well. For me it really comes closest to a 'dual purpose' cymbal.
Sounds very similar to my Sabian AA 21" Rock Ride, which I love... Heavy in the grams and meant for a ride situation, just an all around great ride... Thanks for the video! I will be looking for a Phil model as well.. Sounds amazing!!
I'm 46 and have the same school of thought - I use a ride cymbal to ride, and a crash cymbal to crash. Doing vice versa is like putting an elevator in an outhouse - it doesn't belong. Phil Collins is also a huge influence of mine. My gigging kit uses mesh reso heads to mimick concert toms, as well as a 20" kick. I recently acquired a used 1991 Noble & Cooley Solid Shell Maple 3.875x14" snare in black finish, the same vintage Phil used at that time. All the drums sound amazing! I much prefer Phil's cymbal sound when he was with Paiste and it's unfortunate they don't produce some of those sounds anymore (Sound Creation line for example).
Nice one and I totally agree although I prefer the cymbal sound on later Genesis stuff-more to do with the recording technology than the cymbals themselves. I own the same N&C snare-if you care to scroll back a few vids on my channel you’ll see I give it a little review! Cheers
I went to see Smashing Pumpkins play with Jane’s Addiction last year. I have always loved Jimmy Chamberlin’s playing, but he’s now got a full set of what are basically jazz cymbals - thin washy Istanbul Agops. They sound fantastic recorded - moody and dark and complex - but in the Cap Center in DC I literally heard no definition from them at all. Stephen Perkins, on the other hand, had a ride cymbal that cut through like nobody’s freaking business - it was a truly glorious heavy arena ride cymbal. It probably sounded harsh and/or a bit monotone on it’s own, but was heaven in the mix in the cavernous space. I love me my thin crash/rides but only in my practice room and on quiet coffee house gigs where when I’m riding them, it is at pianissimo.
Thanks for your comments and I absolutely agree with you on this. Stephen Perking used to use a K custom hybrid ride-great cut and the absolute opposite of JCs Istanbuls! JC has a jazz background so I’m not surprised he gravitated towards the Agops. Thanks again for your positive contribution, much appreciated!
Incidentally I just picked up a heavier ride that I am thrilled with - a well broken in 22” Zildjian K Custom Dry ride from the early 90’s. I’ve been through a half dozen rides on the search to fill that role in my collection, and while they have all done the job when needed, I didn’t particularly like any of them on their own. Cheers!
Remember Phil was an early endorsee of Sabina cymbals back in the mid 89's. Back then his ride of choice was a 22" Leopard ride. His use of that ride made my decision to buy the same. Still to this day my favorite ride cymbal.
Thanks for commenting. I do remember, those Leopard rides are/were great cymbals! Need to get one at some point! And remember he was using a mixture of Paiste 602s and Zildjian before that-this cymbal is reminiscent of the 602 heavy he used by all accounts. Cheers for watchin’!
This cymbal has such a quintessential Sabian ride character to it. Hard to put into words, but you can hear it. This ride almost seems like it could have been the prototype for the Paragon ride. "Hmm, the Phil ride sounds great. What if we made it heavy for arena rock?"
IF you can find one, you should check out a Sabian Ed Shaughnessy 21" universal ride. It's named universal because Ed wanted a cymbal that could do any genre of music - which was a requirement when he was with the tonight show orchestra.
Thank you for this and most enjoyable. I was in your space of ride cymbal ride and crash cymbal crash, but these days have become fascinated with the Bop drummers who typically had three cymbals; hi hat, crash and ride crash? They seemed to make it work and I’m exploring that now. I look at Simon Kirke and Michael Shrieve who seemed to pull it off in a more rock style music. Anyway I’m currently experimenting and really enjoying using a Paiste Formula 602 medium 20 ride which seems to crash and ride ok to be. I should say I’m aiming for the minimalist set up these days too, 20/12/14 kit and light weight hardware. Keep having fun drumming.
Yes have to agree a ride is a ride and a crash is a crash. 2 distinct roles. Probably a nice versatile ride cymbal I liked in the late 1980s / early 1990s which did most jobs fairly well was a Zildjian K Custom heavy ride. It was fairly heavy so has a very clear bell and bow and some edge wash. Similarly a Sabian HH Heavy Ride I had for many years which was nice too.
Just bought the Meinl Double Down 21 as a crash ride. Salesman said the 90s were dead when I wanted a ride that would just ride clear with little overtones and just ping. Should have stuck with my gut! The Meinl is great at what it does, but no bell!
Haha what a salesman! I’ve heard that cymbal-great for crash riding but very little ping and the bell is rather undefined for my taste! Still a lovely cymbal though. Thanks for commenting!
My 2002 22" regular ride and 2002 20" power ride do everything I need. Played sabian for a long time and decided to switch two years ago, no looking back. My son plays Sabian, so i can always reminisce.
Great video and totally agree on the Ride/Crash topic! As a Paiste guy myself I went on a big quest years ago, when I needed that one ride that does it all. After lots of comparison I finally found that one magic cymbal and am blown away to this day. Many hats and crashes came and went but I claim this cymbal to be one of those very few true allrounders. It's a Paiste Twenty Custom Full Ride 22". From Metal over Pop to Singer Songwriter, Funk and Jazz, this one serves it all. Deep, bright yet dark and complex, beautiful controlled wash, enough ping but not overpowering and an amazing clear yet slightly washy bell. I'd really recommend checking it out on the used market!
Ah cool that sounds like a sweet cymbal and I’m stoked you’ve found ‘the one’! Thanks for taking the time to contribute to the discussion and I’ll be checking that ride out for sure!
I"ve always thought my first generation Paiste Twenty 20" ride had a very similar quality to Phil's signature ride sound. Bow is just washy enough and the bell is raw and dark, but cutting.
Great stuff. I've been a Genesis fan all my life, and for me, the HH Raw Bell Dry Ride is "the" sound I've got in my head when I think of a ride cymbal. I acquired Phil's Choice RBDR #105 years ago, and it's my most prized drumming item, the one cymbal I will never part with. But to be honest I never dared take it to a gig. I've also got a Sabian AA Dry Ride 21 that sounds deceiptively close to it (without the complex overtones) and it's the cymbal I'll take to a gig if I need *that* sound, and that kind of versatility.
I have this one. Its best of rides. But now i need versatile ride for crashing and riding 😊 and bought myself a Legacy HHX ride 22 its sooo beautifully and washy ride. Great job for Sabian team. Love it
Same with small drums sounding like big drums. Soon we'll hear the 22 chinese cymbal sounds like a pair of 14 inch hats. Wonder if the marketing team/r&d team had the brown acid. Different weights and sizes apply for different settings.
@@honourisdrumming Oh, I do too, but Paiste cymbals are my favorite now. I used to play Zildjian A's, and still love Zildjian A customs. And I love Meinls pure alloy cymbals. They are amazing. Their Byzance brilliants, even their Custom Classics brilliant cymbals. Those, I think are one of the best you can get for the price? Anyway, I'll be watching for more videos and demos, thanks!!
Paiste sig 20 inch full ride the best I've heard or play ,Regular K 20 inch ride number 2 .The HHX 20 complex number 3 .But that Phil Collins in legendary tho I wish I had 1 myself.
I had a theory why ride cymbals suck today and even spoke to a guy at Zildjian about it and found I wasn't to far off the mark .Resources are getting ridiculous to obtain to make cymbals these days hence the prices being insane. Now every company claims thier rides are crashable which personally I don't like but this also means they are putting less material in the cymbals and yet charging way more .Paiste never compromised like this and I respect it but all the other companies have and personally I'm done with Zildjian but still rooting for Sabian.
I like my cheap Zildjian I crash/ride for both, but then again I don't have a paiste b8 Ride to compare it with at home yet. Those Paiste multi-purpose might be the best for both worlds.
Thanks for your comments. I’ve reviewed the Meinl dark ride in another video as well as the only cymbal that crash/rides well, the Sabian Omni! Check those out and thanks!
The Zildjian 22” K dark and 21” K sweet are perfect rides in every way. The only issue that I have with Zildjian is how much their cymbals vary in sound from individual to individual. Paiste is just way more consistent.
