Dalton was fantastic actor and was a fantastic Bond and it upsets me that he is so underappreciated and underrated. His Bond kicks Craig's Bond any day.

Absolutely. Smooth baritone voice, suave, confident manner and pronounced Welsh accent.
Red Eagle (1994) comes close tot that. It is comparable to the Afghanistan chapter of The Living daylights, only then stretched out into one entire independant storyline. Funny thing though, they also included a scene during which Dalton blows up a bridge with explosive devices.
Aléxandros Hispanikós not a Welsh accent, it is a Derbyshire accent. He moved to Belper at the age of three.

If you read the novels, you know that Dalton was the closest of them all to the character. Unfortunately, the 80s weren't the right time for that.
He only missed his scar on his left side of his face.

@@khav11 Bronson is not the actor dalton is. Plus many of his films were at times over the top, dalton's films were more realistic and believable.

@@khav11 Bronson's bond , with an invisible car, driving a tank in the middle of a city and having CGI in his films got away from the simple but real action that made the dalton films much more believable . Because of the gap in years between dalton's films and Bronson's films ( blame it on the producers eather side) it's no wonder that the fans made the next bond film a big moneymaker no matter who played bond.
@@khav11 l totally agree with you about the bond movies being fun , but I also believe that so many box office hits does nessacarlly mean it's a great film . I am going by dalton's acting talent and I just feel he is the best actor to play 007. You and me are entitled to our own opinions.

Certainly no other actor looked closer to Ian Fleming's physical description of Bond. Beyond that, Dalton was temprementally very close to what Bond should be on the screen. Bear in mind that I loved Sean Connery, whom I saw in DR. NO in it's original U.S. theatrical release in 1963!
Even Albert R. Broccoli wanted to take Bond back to his roots after going astray with Roger Moore. I don't know why the fans didn't want that as well.
Likely some of these fans had not read the James Bond novels by Ian Fleming. Timothy Dalton and Albert R. Broccoli were only trying to recapture the spirit of the books in the films. With Roger Moore having such a long tenure (with an overload of jokes in his movies) likely colored some fans view of the character of James Bond.
Timothy Dalton is right on the money in his interview, Bond is a very complex character. We route for him because he is on the side of good despite his short comings.
This is why I love Dalton's Bond. So sincere was he about Bond and his own portayal...
I don't know why many people don't like his JB. He acted extremely well and he was very brave to act many dangerous scene himself, he delivered a successful spy with all aspects...and he is very good looking too...maybe the main reason is because LTK story was not interesting enough...and because Tim was before his time....people have recently realized that JB like Tim and Daniel were great!

Dalton was a great addition to the part after what Moore did to Bond . These producers feel safe keeping a actor like Moore in the part too long when he was in his 50's with a 42" waist and the scripts made him, literally into a clown . Dalton brought back Bond as he should had been but the audience at the time were Moore fans as the core fans had left ( like me ) so when Dalton became Bond I was quite happy since I didn't see a Bond film since DAF in 71'.
Yeah, a clown! I wouldn't have believed you if I didn't see Octopussy, the only Moore film I've seen. 😁

Tim is my second favorite JB right behind Sean.
I think Dalton Bond films were underrated mainly by criticisers, also at that time there was not the huge number of cinemas like today, and people couldn't express and publish their opinions, so people only could hear criticisms on newspapers and TV. Today criticisers can't avoid people themselves can to express and got their own opinions about Craig movies for example. If would have been Twitter, UA-cam and Facebook at Dalton time, surely everything would have been totally different.
After the era of comedy - parody with the right man Roger Moore (except the last film), Timothy Dalton - must play in ''A View to a Kill'' - was the right man at the right time. But he was unlucky because he came to the end of the Cold War (a basic theme in Bond films script) and in the years 1990 - 1994 without a Bond movie.

It's a shame Roger Moore strayed from the character of James Bond and turned him into a playboy/clown, otherwise Dalton at that time would have been more should I say "better appreciated" by fans.

npargaRELOADED, I think you're being a little hard but nevertheless you're probably right. Craigs Bond is dumber... And there is a lot of people that only live in the present. It's like everytime there's a new Bond movie coming out, it's always better than all that's been done before.
Even SKyfall which is loaded with plotholes and girls who make no sense to the story.
How sad. Dalton should have stayed on for longer.
I applaud Dalton's passion and fidelity for the original Ian Fleming texts, but I'm not sure do I agree with his view that Bond is "just as bad as they are". The character is definitely no saint, and he does veer more towards the line of anti-hero than anything, but to say that he's just a heartless murderer who happens to be fighting for the side of good is a puzzling description, especially given how Dalton was just fresh off of making The Living Daylights two years before this.
The Fleming story that film was based on, arguably best illustrates how emotionally conflicted and sensitive the Bond of the novels can be, as he makes a deliberate effort to avoid killing a woman in that tale out of compassion and sympathy for her being a woman. Later in that story, Bond even professes in his head that he hopes he gets fired for this, which we can read as a clear sign of his inner good nature shining through in spite of the profession he deals in, as he's clearly shaken to the point of not even wanting to continue in his line of work. There's also that famous passage in Fleming's Goldfinger, where Bond specifically notes that while he does what he does for Her Majesty's government, he himself takes no personal pleasure in ending the lives of his enemies.
For me, the problem with Dalton's approach is that he seemed to just want to portray a really mean, pissed off Bond 24/7, while overlooking the moments of compassion and sensitivity the character had in the books. I don't know Dalton myself, but in many interviews and stories I've heard of the man, he strikes me as a guy with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. He often seems vaguely pissed off and slightly irritable in his conversations with people, and I suspect it's this inner temper of his that made him want to play such an angry, pissed off Bond, regardless of whether it's actually what Fleming described in the books. While he does get many aspects of the character right, I think he ultimately fell short on the emotional range of the literary Bond by focusing too much on the character's anger.
One key scene that demonstrates this, I think, is a deleted bit in Licence to Kill, where Dalton is seen maniacally laughing after shooting a guy with a harpoon in an unreleased workprint of the film (you can find it by simply typing "Licence to Kill workprint"). If he had really cared about portraying a textbook accurate Fleming Bond, he probably would've told Glen and the screenwriters how un-Bond this moment is, just like how he did with all the deleted jokes in The Living Daylights. But no, dude just couldn't get enough of playing up Bond's mean, ANGRY side!!! LOL

I think Tim is mistaking Jill St. John (who gave an unmemorable, ditzy performance) for Thunderball's Fiona Volpe - the unforgettable Luciana Paluzzi! It must be the red hair?

Dalton was great in this as usual, and I like Bond films with a harder edge and more realism, but the movie went too 80s American action film and the tone was a bit inconsistent. One minute it's Miami Vice, the next you've got a Bond girl who functions solely as a plot device rather than a character and Q just being comedy relief. And Wayne Newton? What is this? Roger Moore's greatest hits? And the weird sideburns just don't work. I love Dalton's portrayal in both films, but where LTK fixed the villain problem (except for the fact that he's a drug dealer, which is a stupid idea for a Bond film), everything else about it is like a 2nd rate, American TV action movie. Timothy is trying his hardest to make it all work and when it works, it really works. But when it doesn't, oh boy. That bar fight was like something out of Batman and Robin. They were on the right track with the Cold War spy thriller thing in TLD. They just needed to fix the main villain. Or make Necros the main villain. He was the one guy I believed was dangerous. I would have liked to have seen Dalton in Goldeneye. Remove some of the dumb innuendos and you've got a well-made action film tailor made for someone like him. It's no surprise that Goldeneye was the only Brosnan film I really got into. Martin Campbell knew how to shoot him so that he wasn't exposed as a weakling pretty boy. That's why the earlier Bond films worked - they had a string of movies with one director, at this time, John Glenn. His only bad movie was A View To A Kill. Now, every film has a different tone. Casino Royale was great, and then everyone more or less forgot what they were doing. Skyfall wasn't bad, but I was done after what they did to Monica Bellucci in Spectre.

@@pmgodfrey5203 He played it serious like Craig.....however...the mystery was gone because the other Bonds came off quick-witted and playboys....which even Craig adapted.....along with Daltons style!!! Dalton was transparent...and looked like a normal spy!!!
@@JustNeedaBeerandPark Perhaps I've missed your point here, but I don't equate being a quick-witted playboy with mystery. I won't go into them, but there are numerous examples of the TD/Bond's wit, of the sardonic kind and sometimes spoken sotto voce as if inside his head, not aloud. Perhaps he used his experience as a stage actor here. For me, TD did carry a sense of mystery. My opinion only, of course.

@@JustNeedaBeerandPark I understand what you say, but to look at it in terms of disguise, e.g. TD/Bond succeeds as a tribesman (TLD), whereas e.g. SC/Bond as a Japanese (YOLT) looks like a pantomime character; in LTK TD/Bond, while obviously an agent, succeeds in convincing Sanchez he's on his side. But difference of opinion is good, better than the too frequent mudslinging. Thanks.
Had the Bond producers made faithful adaptations of James Bond novels, the series would not have lasted more than 2-3 movies. (Any one seen/remembers Harry Palmer series? It was also made by Bond producers and depicts more realistic spy espionage and it was out after 3 movies). Bond survived its first 40 years on the formula of shameless escapist entertainment, before its reboot. Coming to Dalton, he was an ugly looking actor who made 2 Bond movies one of which (LTK) was the lowest grossing Bond movie ever. His performance in TLDL also was unimpressive as well - as he tried to exude charm that he did not have and he struggled with funny one liners. The fact that he hardly got any other lead roles outside those 2 Bond movies indicates that he was not taken very seriously by any one.

If you already consulted a psychiatrist, then you either have a very bad taste or a severe inferiority complex 🙂
