  • The Cadillac ATS requires a transmission fluid and filter service at 45k (many dealers will do at 35k or earlier). If you ignore it, it will lead to an ever-increasing-shuddering transmission. Most rear wheel drive GM cars (including the Camaro and Corvette) will not make it to 45k before the shuddering begins. Mine was getting progressively worse especially on longer trips. After seeing what was inside the transmission, I'm glad I did it early at 39k. Here's the diy-in-the-garage-at-home process. • Cadillac ATS Transmiss...

    Absolutely great video. A local shop wanted $500. I completed it within 2 hours thanks to this video. The CTS has no shudder and shifts smooth as butter. I used the fluid extractor and pulled all the old transmission fluid out before removing the pan. Not one drop was spilled. the fluid he uses in the video is the correct one. Mobile 1 has another fluid but with a black label. Dont get that one.Make sure you get the blue label. Mine still had the factory filter in it so it hasn't been changed in 100k. There is a date code on the GM filters. the 4 ramps gave me enough clearance to roll around on a creeper. I used a body panel rivet remover to get the fill plug out. You can also use 90 degree long neck pliers.

      @@MrFitzfn if it’s never been done before, drain it and measure how much you remove. Then replace with that much. You can also find specs on the Google or pay $20 for access to alldata’s website 👍

      When you say shutter and shifts are you referring to when it feels like it lags during 2nd gear? I have a 2016 cadallic ATS, and just found out I need to replace the transmission fluids and have it drained!!

    DUDE YOU ARE A LIFESAVER. Just changed the transmission filter & fluid after my car kept jerking & when putting into drive wouldn’t move unless i tapped the gas. Bought that hose from harbor freight & you saved me thousands of dollars. Rides like new. Belle tire wanted 6k for a new trans & told me it was shot. 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0T AWD. Hardest thing was fitting my fat hand to put the tube into the fill hole lol. Thanks again brother, much appreciated! Also you helped my change my rear diff fluid. Ended up have to replace the rear diff dude to leaking & running out of gear oil.

    Thanks for doing this! The ATS gets neglected on forums, and there aren't many DIYs, especially for transmission fluid changes. You're just about as meticulous as I am when you get under the car, make 4 passes around the oil pan when tightening, etc. Glad to know I'm not the only one.

    Did this today thanks!!! mechanic said it would cost $600 to flush my system and there’s still no guarantee it would work. I did exactly as you did and it runs like brand new.

      Love it. It’s mostly clearing that filter to restore line pressure. Sometimes it it needs to be done 2 or 3 times to get rid of all the material inside. So glad it worked for you! Huuuuge savings! 🙏

    Thank you for the excellent video! I've always performed my own auto repairs except for paint/bodywork. I had the dealership service mine since I'm too old to work under a car on jack stands, for long periods, so I'm looking at car lifts. When I changed my front and rear differential fluid at 62,000, I was surprised at how milky and thin-looking it was. So I ended up doing it again after 1000 miles or so.

    I bought one of those pumps from Harbor freight and was using it to refill the differential in my son’s car. Hot summer afternoon, thick gear oil, in one of the pressure strokes pushing the gear oil, the hose blew out of the pump base and shot gear oil all over the driveway. I used electrical tape to secure it in order to finish the job.😊

    Just did this service. Yeah, the 4 ramps trick works but sketchy. You can drain some fluid via the plug but you will spill some anyway. There is a replaceable lip seal that seals to top of the filter funnel. I did mine at 88k and it was cleaner than in this video. I did have the fluid flushed at 50k. If you have AWD the front axle drive shaft is really in the way. To get the plug back in I used a plastic 90 deg fork too that is made for removing snap in panel fasteners. That got the plug back in in 20 seconds after wrestling with it for over 20 minutes. Total job time was 2 1/4 hours.

      @@priptalsingh3076 I sold my XTS. I had my transmission fluid changed out by a reputable transmission shop. Don't remember how many quarts was put in to the transmission but I was informed by the service tech that the transmission has NO filter that needs to be replaced. The problem went away afterwards. I flip cars as a hobby so this was my last project before the COVID Pandemic hit. I bought the XTS dirt cheap at 121,000 miles. The shuddering issue around the 122,000 mile mark.

    recommend always making sure the fill plug comes out okay before draining in case you have a problem, same for differentials. Also with the change you did you didn't get the dirty fluid in the torque converter so there can be 30-50 more there depending on the setup. Thats why dealers offer a flush and a pan/filter change like you did. I have them do both so i get the bennies of both new fluid and a new filter. But great job on the video!

      Good tips! There’s an older service bulletin online where they change the fluid 3x this way to get the tc fluid as much as possible. That was my plan, to do it again soon, but once I took it in to the dealer for a different problem, I asked them to diagnose the shudder. And they did. The previous dealership told me it was not bad enough yet and I didn’t press. Which is why I changed my own fluid. And as you can see, it seriously needed to be done. My car is at a new dealership and they have been magnificently helpful. 👍 ThAnk you for your feedback 🙏

      @@sstressfl Like you I have experienced a really bad dealer and a really good dealer - thankfully in that order :) The new dealer has taken care of me fully and really fixed every problem i bring in so i now reasonably trust what they say.       Flushing the tranny cause more damage to your Valve body and solenoids. Best way itS to drop the pan and drain, Change Tranny oil filter , Don’t use DEXRON VI that stuff is junk and what makes your tranny fail! Use
      Mobil 1 LV ATF HP. Then wait 2 weeks and do the same drain and fill and tranny oil filter change and thats how you get all that Old Dexron VI out .

    The metal shavings are normal in a pan drop and fluid change. The magnet is there to hold captive the debris from freely circulating through the transmission. A good schedule for this maintenance is every 60,000 miles. Copper nickel antiseize on the pan bolt threads is going to help future you get the bolts out without trouble

      The ats 6 speed calls for a 35k fluid and filter change. And the volume of shavings and clutch material is not normal when shuddering due to contamination starts at 20k. It’s excessive. My 100k transmission fluid change in my Dodge Grand Caravan looked about the same which was expected at 100k.

    I know I am 4 years late, but the metal shavings, for the most part, are normal wear and tear. Your fluid is a little bit on the darker side. When you need to worry is when there are metal chunks.

      I agree it looks almost normal, but I’ve changed a lot of trans fluid. This stuff is way too much for a car that started its problems at 20k. Even more than I’ve seen at 100k. That filter was completely saturated with clutch and metal material. With excess mixed in the fluid and laying on the bottom of the pan. So bad that line pressure was impacted to cause shifting issues.

      6 speed! Similar issues as the 8 speed. But after initial cleanup the 6 speed should be ok. The 8 speed shudder will reoccur and need a flush again and again. Many 8 speed owners find every 30k miles to keep the shudder at bay.

    Metal sludge is normal in a transmission, it's sort of healthy to be honest. It means your transmission teeth have worn together. One of the worst things to do is to flush the transmission, a simple change of filter and fluid is all you need.
    After I did my second change on my ATS it was much clearer. I plan to change mine every other year, because I know their transmissions are very complicated and sort of known to have issues.

      You speak truth!! :) I do know why you're saying not to flush, but on a newer transmission like this one that is filled with excessive metal and clutch sludge that causes shuddering, a flush is the actual solution dictated by GM (albeit temporary until it fills up with contaminant again). Doing it manually helps tremendously though. Especially if you do it multiple times like you did. An older transmission that has been neglected can start shifting horribly after a flush... the process strips away sludge that is keeping it functioning. And I agree with you... I think an annual change on this transmission is required for long life. Thanks for your feedback and enjoy the ATS!

    Recommend complete transmission oil flush at a mechanic shop. You do a drop pan/ filter but the tranny itself will have oil in it that you can’t drain with just swapping the oil.

      Like I said in the video, it might require multiple pan drops to get rid of the shudder. GM says 3x is usually required. A flush is a great way to get it done if you have access to a trusted mechanic. Besides, the 8 speed will need a flush every 30k miles to keep it from shuddering. The 6 speed will usually only require one in its lifetime. But also this was diagnostic for me. It proved that contamination was the root cause of the shudder.

    In case you have to do this to another car, here is an easier (for me) method. I saw you have air compressors. Use the large bottle of fluid. Use 2 3/8 or smaller plastic fishtank type tube. Make 2 exact tube diameter holes in the fluid container cap and stick one tube down to the bottom. Put the other end of that tube into the transmission. Put the other tube into the cap about an inch. Use low air pressure and put air on that tube end. It will force all the trans fluid into the transmission.

    You should change your transmission valve body. I hade the same issue I changed the fluid, filter and valve body because I seen my fluid like your if not with more metal shaving sludge so I thought my solenoid was clogged or the valve body it self because the fluid expansion when hot/warm and having sluggish old fluid can cause those little passages to get clogged or partially clogged. So long story short if you have problems with your transmission when it's hot or warmed up I think you should definitely change those 3 things before more damage

      Thats great advice! The dealer ended up flushing it. It's fine now! But shy of a power flush, the valve body could have stuff stuck in it.

    WOW! I had no idea how hard it was to change the transmission fluid. I wonder if this is the same for the ATS V. I am just surprised that there is not an easy way to empty the transmission oil and add it back from the engine bay. I had to take my ATS V sedan A8 in yesterday for the jerky/harsh shifting from first to second. I received a text this morning from Sewell that they had to replace the Value body. Thanks for sharing this video.

    All that stuff you pulled off the magnet and from the bottom of the pan, that stuff is normal. Its very fine metal and clutch material which happens with use of any automatic transmission. What you dont want is actual chunks or metal shavings that look like they have been scraped off but, that very fine stuff will always be there.

      At 100k yes. Not at 20k when the shudder started. The filter was saturated. Low
      Line pressure. None of this is normal.

    Most mechanics will advise a pan drop and filter change just like Michael did. They advise against a full flush to avoid slippage.

      Thanks Tom! In my life, it has always been a standard service (at different mileage with different vehicles) to drop the pan and change the filter. A flush was a rare service, usually tied to transmissions that had serious problems/contamination. And I did read that a flush can help clean an old transmission "too well" and cause shifting issues. But with these 6 and 8 speed transmissions from GM, especially well under 100k miles, the flush might be the only fix for the shudder... or a 2x or 3x home-fluid change.

    FYI What you saw in the oil pan is mainly clutch material and the amount you had was very minimal.

      You think so? I've never seen that much material and especially not in a car with 40,000 miles. It's excessive. Steel. Aluminum. And clutch material. I've gone 100,000 miles in cars and not seen that kind of corruption. I'm about to change the transmission fluid in my 2015 Grand Caravan with 100k on the odometer. It'll be interesting to compare.

      @@zacharyball8009 i guess I misunderstood. I agree it looks very contaminated. And by normal you mean normal for this specific transmission then yes.... at 40k miles this 6 speed looks like other transmissions do at 100+k miles. I just dropped the pan on my 2015 Dodge Grand Caravan at 100k and it looked similar if not healthier. And the van’s transmission is smooth as silk and has never shuddered. And the Dodge has a recommended fluid change at 120,000 miles or 60,000 with heavy towing. The 6l45 is indeed a very weak and/or poorly designed/low quality transmission.

    My ATS had the shuttering issue, known issue with 8 speed transmission. Dealership did fix with new fluid, different weight, and a new computer flash. GM totally knows there is something wrong with this transmission. Car hasn't felt the same since they did this, feels like a less torque is making it to the wheels. I think they are just limping me along until the warrant is over. Dealership said in the early days they were replacing the torque converter but this is the new fix now. It does shift better and now shutter, but sometime still doesn't act right. Just wondering what the long term out come will be with this car.

      @@sstressfl Don't get me wrong, the dealership has been great. But they are only allowed to do what GM authorizes. The cars has been great overall, enjoy driving it every day. But when it comes to noises in the rear suspension, won't touch it. Shuttering, just change the fluid and re-program computer. When I complained that it doesn't shift and drive the same, you get excuses that it's in your head. Now I've got the noise coming from the front driver side suspension. Only happens over 60 miles per hour and certain road conditions make it worse. Hopefully it's just an unbalanced tire or something simple. Love the car, hate the lack of support from GM.     When doing fluid changes I have a box of large puppy pads in my shop....I lay them out for spills.....those really soak up a lot of spills

    One problem. When tightening the bolts start in the middle and do a cross pattern. Center bolt on one side then center on other side. Then back to opposite side. Then back to opposite side and rotating in a cross cross pattern. Tighten to 8ft.
    lbs. First pass 4 lbs 2nd pass to 8ft. lbs

      Thaks for sharing your concern. I did a criss cross pattern to bring the pan down. I went around the block to make sure I didnt miss one. Sorry if you feel I didnt make that clear enough. Also the manual says 6.64 ft-lb (9nm) total torque.

    i have a Cadillac ATS-V and i have been suffering from this shudder since i bought the car, so this oil you talked about in the video is it suitable for ATS-V?? Note: i drove the car for 73,000 kilometres without changing the transmission oil once, as the dealer said there is no need.

    I am doing mine now. I drained fluid, cleaned, installed new filter and put pan back on. Six quarts came out and I am filling back up now. How do I know how many quarts go back in? I saw another video and the guy said to remove the drain plug and fill till it comes out there. Any help would be great. Thanks

      I did not! I read that 3 fluid changes are almost equal to a flush. I had planned to do 3... at least try 2, but then my car ended up at the dealership and they took care of it. And thanks for the feedback! :)

    Curious, did you buy a GM filter or after market one? I very much enjoy your videos. I have a 16 ATS and I get the shuttering, kinda sounds like lugging the motor if it were a stick.

      Aftermarket! I read some reviews and bought one that people claimed worked very well. My trans feels great right now... I suspect the rear end is now an issue.

    Great video! I have the shuderring issue with 2016 ATS and was struggling to find if this is a common issue with the car on amy forum. Gona change the transmission oil / filter and see if it helps.

      @@DoctrZhivago Yes it did! I would say about 90% of the shuddering is gone. Do get it flushed a couple of times at least (I did the flushing process with a cheaper gear oil).

    Should you change out the fluid even if the car has more than a 100,000 miles? I was told not to switch the liquid because it might just cause more problems so I’m debating trying out the Lucas transmission fix instead.

      Historically transmissions that have not been serviced get all worn and gummed up inside. New fluid has a way of cleaning it and washing away the gunk that was keeping things sealed. So sometimes after changing fluid on an old transmission.... it gets worse because the new fluid washes and cleans all the old gunky stuff out. So its a gamble. I usually go ahead and change the fluid and filter. If it makes things better then YAY! If not... then boooo, I'm paying for repairs. But if you want to try the Lucas stuff, feel free. You'll need to remove some fluid to make room for it. But I suspect you probably need a new filter inside that thing. Its gonna be clogged and causing low line pressure. Whatever you decide, if the transmission is giving you grief, you have to do something or it'll eventually leave you stranded somewhere. Praying for a good outcome!!

    I enjoy so much yor videos; but putting fres oil, remove the shutter on your car, I have that shutter too on my Cadillac ATS 2016, it is still on waranty?.....i am thinking bring my car to the dealer hear in Montreal Canada....thanks for you advises...I am waiting for ...I am learnig a lot with your videos..thank you

      You have a 2016! That's the 8 speed transmission that is covered under the lawsuit. If you are still under warranty, they should do the fluid flush on your transmission per GMs instructions free of charge. Give them a call :)

    Mine is a 2017 ATS luxury and i have noticed shuttering when transmission shifting at light load I have over 100K on it
    I think I will do oil change on the tranny and the rear end axle seal is leaking Hope I caught it in time so I will be working on that soon. Before driving it much more. I used mean green cleaner on the display and now the touch screen wont work properly. so I will be installing a new touch screen soon.

      Those 8 speeds definitely need frequent fluid and filter changes to keep from shuddering. And uhhhhg I’ve had so many issues with the rear diff on this car! Sorry you’re dealing with it too. Sounds like the mean green was prett caustic. I use mequiars auto detailer wax to clean screens. It’s very mild and leaves a very clean finish.

    Why is it "STRESSFUL" lol. Trying changing a 400+ lbs automatic transmission on jack stands. ;) I've done plenty of fluid/filter changes on German car's transmissions and it makes it much easier it have it well lifted on 6 ton jack stands. Since you have to pump the fluid in by hand and also do it while the car is running and go through the gear while pumping more in as needed until full.

      AL I haven’t thought that far in advance lol Also I haven’t brake fluid flushed nor planned on it. I put new rear calipers in and added a lot of new fluid. That helps a bit. My next project will be rear differential fluid hopefully soon before the snow arrives!

    Great video, thanks. I have a Cadillac ATS 2014 AWD. My question is: does my transmission needs to be hot, my car has been on stands for a couple of days.Do i need to go to the gears ? How do i know how much oil is in the gears ect...In your video you took out six quarts of oil and put it 6. How can I tell if I have the correct amount of oil?
    Is it possible I’m missing a bit of oil to begin with?

      Does not need to be hot! Do not go thru the gears. Drop the pan and change the oil. I read that others used 6 qts when they replaced their trans oil and so I measured to make sure that 6 qts was correct. I drained 6 qts and it’s as others have said. I added 6 qts. There is a process to replace all of the fluid but it requires much more fluid and the ability to pump it thru the trans while it is running. The best at home job I can do is to put in a new filter, new fluid. It will make a huge difference. Perfect? No. But you can try to change it again in the future and the new filter should have caught much of the remaining contaminants. The option is to pay the dealership to flush it for you.     Still running smooth? looking at doing it to mine. I general only have the shudder at low rpms under 2000.

      HUGE improvement. I have found that I still have some after an hour drive, fully warmed up, usually at 70 on the hwy going up hills. But the contamination is the reason why it shudders. It has to be done. A new filter has to be installed. New fluid must displace the old stuff. It makes all the difference.

I'm a road worker and long hours so sorta of a trade off, long hours vs money out of pocket....... Lol. Hopefully your transmission holds out for awhile or goes while still under warranty

I do understand how priorities have to change given diff situations and other priorities (like work) have to come first. Glad you got it taken care of. You made me think of a friend who makes hundreds per hour and explained to me once, "I would LOSE money to stop what I was doing to work on my car. It's cheaper to pay someone else". Love it :) Oh well. I suspect I would still work on cars even if I was rollin' in dough. I so much enjoy it. My best to you!

    My Cadillac is close to 70,000 miles, can I change the gear oil for the first time after this mileage without any problem?

      I would!! It’s not like a transmission. It’s chunky metal inside with 3 seals keeping the fluid from dripping out. Also make sure the vent on the top of the differential is clear and breathing free. They get plugged easily. If it’s an AWD you can use Amsoil SVG fluid or the GM equivalent. If it’s a RWD use the GM fluid spec’d for that specific differential. 👍

    Harbor freight cracked me up 😂 I have a 2018 CTS with a harsh 1-2 shifting. Cadillac wants to charge me $1,800 for a flush, filter change and transmission reprogram. I will do the flush and filter change myself hopefully it fixes the issue! 🙏🏻

      lol only because you understand 😂 uhhg how did fluid changes get so scary expensive? The pan drop and filter change should give you a huge improvement. But about 50% of the old fluid is still in the torque converter so I have read that GM recommends 3 pan drops and filter changes (with driving in between) total to clean it out enough for normal operation. That can be annoying but just be ready to do it again if you need to 👍 such gorgeous and enjoyable cars to drive. I pray your transmission is smooth after your first pan drop 🙏 Thanks for sharing!

      But yes definitely agree, beautiful cars I love everything about my CTS the worst part is just that hard shift into 2nd gear. Makes me wanna get rid of the damn car 😂 I’m going to do my first fluid change this weekend.

Then if its still harsh shifting or starts getting worse again, 1-2k miles later, do it again. Or you can have someone power flush it. Praying you get it resolved 🙏 I can still feel the angst I had while owning that car.

I’m on a couple Cadillac pages on Facebook and a GM tech commented saying a flush is required to “fix” the shifting. Cadillac had quoted me $600 for a flush only, but I assume any shop can do the flush right?

      @@wolfkixs9022after I changed my fluid it was way better. But not 100% fixed. When I was at the dealer for an unrelated warranty repair I told the tech that the trans was still shuddering. He fixed it. He told me he did nothing. I later found out he wasn’t supposed to fix it under warranty. But another tech told me he did a flush. And there were software updates for the trans. So can any shop do it? No. I have read about shops that mess it up. So wherever you take it make sure they have a solid reputation 💪🙏 But the flush should fix it.

      No not at all. The new Mobile HP fluid was designed with a little extra friction modifer to help with the probems in the 8 speed. Its Dexron 6 with a boost :) But many people use the regular GM fluid (AC Delco) with no problems. The important thing is to change it and get a new filter in their. If you have a serious shudder, multiple fluid changes (3) might be needed or a professional flush. Hope that helps!

    This is almost the right procedure. There is a bolt to tune the level of the oil. You need to turn the engine on idle and remove this bolt (33)

    This is such a great video, I have a 2013 ATS and it’s shuddering really hard. I’m not a car guy at all and a couple places I’ve talked to have said that changing the transmission fluid will actually damage it. Have you ever heard of that??

      Yes I have heard that many times. An older high-mileage transmission can develop a bunch of tarnish and gunk inside which actually helps it keep working. Once you put fresh fluid in the trans, it "washes" the transmission and cleans some of the built up varnish and breaks up the gunk which can make the tired old transmission start to slip. However if I was faced with a shudder, I'd change the fluid and filter in a heart beat. I can't stand the shudder. But that's just me. To me its worth the risk. Plus the new trans fluid is synthetic. It doesn't gunk up like the old stuff. It's not my car. But if it was, I would risk it and chase after the fix and start with a fluid and filter change. Just be aware, that you might need to do it 2 or 3 times total to rid your car of all the old fluid. If it doesnt work and it starts to slip real bad, you'll need repairs or a new/used trans. You have to make that judgement call. But again, to me, I'd gamble on the fluid. And spend the money on the repair if I had to.

Didn’t really notice it till after I left the dealership but I just got the transmission and filter change done earlier this evening. So far the shudder seems to be a little less but maybe it just needs time to circulate. We’ll see but good suggestion on the shudder regardless

It should feel better with a pan drop change but that torque converter holds about 50% of the fluid so multiple fluid changes/filters are usually required to get it close to perfect. Hope yours gets better! If not, try it again. Hard to get all of the steel out. Did you get a chance to see the old fluid? The old filter? Did it look like mine?

    Hello ! I currently have a ats 2015. I was thinking of changing the transmission fluid due to the fact that when breaking it begins to pull back but only does it every once in a while. Would it possibly be due it hadn’t had a change in the transmission fluid ?

      The transmission fluid interval I think is 35k on this car. It sure doesn't hurt to keep it fresh and clean! Especially that filter... once it gets filled with metal and clutch material, it gets blocked and lowers line pressure in the transmission. Its also possible you have a transmission issue (I cant be sure) but my attitude is do what you can do cheap and easy first! And, its hard to diagnose until you have fresh fluid and a clean filter.

      A I it has been 90% better! It’s a must do. Also look for anything that could be out of tune on your car or dragging brakes or wheel alignment. In my experience so far all of that can add to shudder.

      I just did the transmission fluid change. It was a bit intimidating at first, but I got it done and was easy. My fluid was dark red, still in decent shape. But I still changed it anyways including the filter.

    Thank you very much for the vid Micheal. It helps guide me through the same process with my 2014 ats that has worsening transmission shudder at 65k. The shuddering is now gone. However, I now have grinding noise coming from the tranny at 1st and 2nd gear regardless of mode (auto or manual). It happens all the time at cold start but much less often after driving for about 30’. What do you think is the problem? I used 6 qt of the atf just like you did. I spilled i littlr during pumping but the spill is very small.

      Awesome that the shudder is gone! But grinding is not good. Assuming it could have improper fluid level. The transmission is very sensitive to proper level. Were you able to measure the amount of fluid that came out? There is a way to verify the level using the fluid level bolt on the pan. I hope it's just improper level, but I hate that there is noise, it's possible you have some wear damage internally. A buddy of mine is having his 2013 ATS 6 speed auto completely rebuilt right now due to internal damage and his has been maintained by the dealership :( I pray that's not your situation. But start with verifying proper level first! Let me know what you discover!

      @@sstressfl turned out the fluid was low ☹️I had assumed that my garage was level and thus, putting the car on 4 jack stands would identical to your case. So I only put in 6 quarts just like you did without actually measuring how much I took out. Turned out the garage has a freaking slope (the level tool confirmed it). I jacked up the front two axles up via the middle jack point (with backup jack stands on the sides) to make sure the car is level and do the transmission fluid level check at 122F (with an IR gun); no fluid came out of the drain hole. It took 1/2 more quart to be at proper fluid level. Apparently, tilting the car to the front caused 1/2 more quart to come out. At the end, the car now shifts smoothly on all gears. Hopefully my stupid mistake didn’t cause too much damage after about 100 miles of driving 😑

      You could take it to a dealer and let 'em pump it through ;) Or remove the overflow bolt and pump more fluid into the mix to dilute it yourself - but its driving better than it ever has since I bought it at 17k.
      Here's how I see it... It's NOT the fluid so much as it is the incredible amount of metal shavings. It needs a new filter asap. It needs the magnet to be cleaned off, it needs the pan to be wiped clean. Just like the magnet, the old filter was completely maxed out. I suspect the shavings in the bottom of the pan get sucked up while driving, press up against the saturated filter, restrict proper fluid flow, then fall back down into the pan when you stop driving. Shuddering, poor shifting, all of it is due to the shavings. Once you have the new filter installed it will grab the remaining metal shavings. You could change it again (as some ATS owners do) and replace the filter again. And the old fluid? Its synthetic! Its capable of many more miles, but it's the corruption of the fluid, not the viscosity of the fluid that needs to be fixed.

      @@sstressfl This is exactly it. Your video helped me do my 2014 ATS and I had the exact same findings. TONS of metal shavings in the pan and the old transmission filter was fully gunked up. The old fluid didn't necessarily look bad as you said, it was just full of metal shavings and I would absolutely notice the shudder after highway driving.
      My ATS has ~55k and would shudder really bad, but just did the 6quart drain/refill with a new filter and it's a complete day and night difference.
      No shudder at all after long trips/highway driving and the car is much smoother in it's shifting. My next plan is to do the rear-diff drain/refill as I think this would help also.

      The issue is that this started at 20k miles and yet this transmission looks like one that has 100k miles. Fluid was so saturated with metal and clutch material that it caused low line pressure due to clogged filter and the contaminated fluid aided in slip.

    What about the filters o ring, or seal, or whatever they are calling it. It's supposed to be removed and replaced before reinstalling the filter?

      The filter came with a new one. The old one looked like new and had no rips or damage so I used it. But it’s there if you care to pull the old one from its perch and tap in the new one.

    Silly question, if you remove that fluid check bolt. could you put the pump hose in there and pump the fluid out? About to do this myself and trying to figure out a way to do it that doesn't end with me dumping this on my face.

      lol... the face splash is a very real risk! But the reason they do transmissions this way (at least I always thought so) is because you need to replace the filter. And the only way to do that is to drop the pan. Sadly that fluid check bolt won't help you to empty it. I have heard of people adding drain plugs to their pans! But that won't save you for this fluid change. Wear safety glasses! :)

    I have a 2013 with 89,000 miles don’t have no transmission problems but don’t know if person before me ever changed it but was wondering if you think I should do it just incase I’m just scared that if I do it at these miles it will slip

      You have the 6 speed auto just like me. I know some people that have changed their fluid at higher miles and did not have any issues. But you could always call a Cadillac dealer and simply ask if they think it's ok. Or... you can visit cadillacforums.com and post a question. They are quite the group of smart folks that like playing with cars.

      This was experimental and it proved worthy! But right after this, the car has been in and out of the dealer for warranty work ever since. More than 100+ days and counting :/ I have the transfer case and front diff fluid, and Winter has finally ended but I haven't had the car..... and it's still at the dealer.

      @@sstressfl I bought my 2018 ATS a half year ago and I have a sound on the front driver side of the car that sounds like a grimy wheel bearing took it in they said it was a broken wheel hub still makes the noise to this day I feel your pain with the ATS it’s a shame because it seems like the car is built really well but many people online seem to have countless problems with this car

    I can't find a local transmission shop to do this, including Goodyear or national trans shop. How many quarts needed for 6 spd auto trans for 15 awd ATS 2,0L, base, Please? Is there Amsoil fluid equivalent?

      My ats was a 15 base awd 2.0t as well :) I dropped the pan and measured. 6 qts exactly. So I replaced 6 qts. And yes some people use amsoil and love it. But I recommend you use their application chart… but do t be afraid to email or call them. They are happy to tell you what’s compatible for your car.

      Was there any change when you changed the fluid and filter? If no improvement, it could indicate you have another issue. If it was better then change it again. Or take it to a shop a d have them power flush the system. I hope that helps 👍

      If you do it yourself, the rule is 2 to 3 fluid/filter changes required. I had planned to repeat it if necessary but then my engine had problems and I took it to the dealer for warranty work. They ended up doing a flush to my transmission (after many back and forths). It's been good since.

    I have 2017 ATS 110K miles on it and it shudders so bad. Giving it some more gas in a sudden it feels like the whole car turned off then back on, that's how bad it is! Help!

      We have the same trans :) I bought this filter and it fit and worked great! No need to use the gasket that comes with it. The factory pan gasket is reusable. amzn.to/3EaknU1

    Great video, I have the exact same car and I’m having the same problem but every place I ask them to change my transmission fluid they tell me it’s a bad idea 🤷‍♂️. How is the vehicle after the fluid change? I really run my ats hard and I really would love more performance.
    Any advice?

      Typically the fix for 6 speed shudder is trans fluid and filter flush. Sometimes (but more rarely) the torque converter needs to be changed. The manufacturer recommends fluid and filter change at 45k miles. After I changed mine it made a huge difference but not 100% perfect. Eventually the dealer used a proper flush to replace 100% of the fluid and that is what finally fixed it. I hope that helps.

      If any place shy's away from a flush its because they will refuse responsibility if ur car stops shifting. They will tell you they warned you.. but in reality what they dont tell you.. is a flush could possibly ( break loose material caked inside the transmission ) and it will no longer catch gears.. now what the service advisor should've told u is a drain & fill with a replace of gasket & filter isnt the same thing. Thats what u seen in this video. Drain & fill with new filter and gasket.. idk why places dont explain this too customers. Oh plus dealers usually want proof the atf was changed on time usually before claiming responsibility for destroying ur car.. lmao

    I've got a 2014 ATS 3.6 with about 40k and I recently started noticing the shudder. Dealer would charge $400 so I'm going with your method. Thanks for the information. BTW sometimes to get my A/C to blow cold I have to tap the temp control all the way to HI and back to LO. I cannot find any info on this and the dealership is at a loss but they did change out expansion tube / valve and condenser which helped the overall problem of not cooling at all. any ideas....thanks again RRW

      I’m guessing the blend door actuator is malfunctioning. It’s behind your glove box. I would remove the glove box and take a look to see if it’s working right. Hope you can fix it!
