My uncle listened to this with me in the car when I was a kid, like i thought this man was devout and and this song scared the hell out of me so I remembered it. I didn't know the name or artist and so years later I finally found it and it's now one of my favorite songs XD
I remember quite vividly an interview from the 90s on an old dial-up website interview, I think it was dated sometime in late 1994 not long after the album was out. Trent Reznor wrote this song not as an anti-Christian song, but the whole song was actually about bad priests who create "their own versions of gods", which are "dead" to Trent and most average people. When I first heard the song, my interpretation was similar. Trent was going through a spiritual crisis and started going to church while he was writing The Downward Spiral from 1992 to 1993. He was angry that the priest said racist and homophobic things, the priest saying things like "Aids is God's answers to gays" and other things like "WW2 was to make people suffer and get close with God". Trent saw that this vision of the priest's god was completely man-made and corrupted and hypocritical (drowning in his own hypocrisy), and not at all what the real God would have wanted, which Trent was trying to find. Ever since, he never went to church and practiced God in his own way (something like a very loose spiritual Christian agnostic). It's similar to when Marilyn Manson said, "I never really hated the one true God but the God of the people I hated". Edit two months after my comment: I finally found a snippet of the interview I was talking about after a lot of online digging, it's from July 1994. 25+ years ago and my memory was correct: «He [Reznor] went to church. "For a while I got good things out of it, especially that feeling of purity." But once he got a whiff of self-righteousness, a human quality on top of Reznor's long-hate list, he stopped attending. "I hate that 'I'm a better person than you' bulls*it."» Another from April 1994: «“I was trying to explore some of the paranoia I have as a sexually active person in the age of AIDS,” he says of “Heresy.” “I guess I feel cheated for not growing up in a more liberated era. At the same time, what gets me mad is the way the right wing [referencing radical evangelicals] has used the ‘convenience’ of this epidemic in helping to promote their own agenda.”» Hersey makes a lot more sense with these 2 quotes.

Glad I came upon this song, it is quite amusing........ If there is a hell it will pretty cool if it sounds like this. The sounds of raging fire and ice-skating.
Hell is a horrible place of torment. And the truth is, it's a real place where human souls go if they die in their sins apart from Christ. But Hell isn't even the final destination. Hell is just a temporary waiting place.
To some it is home, sweet home. And yes there are parts that are cold. Also God has nothing to do with the decision of where a soul goes once separated from the body.
I'm a Christian. I know that Trent is an atheist, but I can't help but think about how the character in Downward Spiral went from abandoning his religion to reckless consumption of sex and drugs in two songs flat.
I'm a Christian too but Trent wasn't atheist, he's an agnostic theist. Talking about Terrible Lie he stated, "I believe there's a god but I'm not too sure of his relevance. It was just a theme I kept coming back to-religion, guilt and doubting." Later interviews were similar. As for the subject matter of The Downward Spiral, the character has an obvious spiritual hole missing, and he's trying to fill it with sex and drugs. Hence the quote in the song Closer, "you bring me closer to God". "The Dog Album" by Alice in Chains has many similar themes to The Downward Spiral, by which Layne Staley was inspired by The Downward Spiral, but it is tamer in its presentation.
Imagine if i told you that the less proof of something there was the more you should believe in it. Now what if I told you that belief must necessitate lack of proof or it doesnt exist. Infact what is deemed faith ends up being just fact if there is proof. Seems paradoxical doesnt it?
Marshmellow Network Scary happens. A lot. Hell is real, and he is already there. At the end of the album he commits suicide. In real life, Trent Reznor (the composer) used this song/album to work through his darkness, got clean and better, and is still alive and healthy today, making better music than ever; although some say he was best at his worst.
I find the fact that a Nine Inch Nails song is in a book about atheism of all things really amusing. This song is from a narrative album about a character's spiral into degeneracy and then death. If you're looking for songs more relativistic to Trent Reznor's weariness towards religion, he has many more songs which outline a more cohesive viewpoint than this one.
This song is less about mainstream religion and more about a cult leader-type figure. It screams ‘religious abuse,’ which is common. It’s from a concept album, and it’s one of the early tracks. I think it suggests the narrator grew up in some extreme fundamentalist shit. The album itself gets much darker as the subject is broken from the start, numbed by drugs, and meeting toxic people. It ends with a suicide attempt. Many people thought it ended with a successful suicide but it’s actually a segway into the next concept album: the fragile. That album is about trying to exist in a normal life but being on the verge of another breakdown. Music like this exists because life is hard and for people with similar experiences, it’s a life saver. This album helped me through the worst time in my life, a few years ago.
