  • Friends, a recent article in The Atlantic magazine highlights the crisis of isolation befalling the United States. Americans have never been-or felt-more solitary, especially the younger generations. And the consequences are often fatal: loneliness is a major cause of the recent spikes in depression, anxiety, and suicide, which are at unprecedented levels. Today, we discuss the loss of our social bonds and how Catholic thought can help heal and re-unite us.
A listener asks, given free will, does God know what choices we will make?
    00:00 | Intro
01:23 | Bishop Barron’s recent USCCB and diocesan work
02:22 | Why should a person’s chosen isolation matter to anyone else?

Related to “loneliness”, I met more and more Christians talk about they got ride of LONELINESS when they started to embrace Mary(as our God’s beloved mother) ,and pray Rosary with her daily!
    This is amazing fact!

Our Blessed Mother was given to us in God’s plan.
Due to the lack of Mercy towards others, in these times it’s necessary to have a prayer life.
We were taught through our Blessed Mother by our Consecration to Jesus through Mary, the powerful protection keeps the Family grounded by doing the Family Rosary. Have church prayer meetings is a way of getting connected with like minded individuals. 🙏🕊️✝️

I'm feeling such isolation because my siblings and children are living so distant from me and my husband. I think this is a common problem in our country today. No one stays in one place anymore, and families grow apart.

I was just discussing this very issue with my family. We live in the Amish Country. The Amish don't own or drive automobiles. They only use a horse and buggy. They generally live near their relatives, and visit them on Sunday afternoons. Family is really important to the Amish community in Lancaster County PA.

In Ireland, we have perhaps the richest inheritance of Christian community in any Western country, but we are abandoning the foundation of it. It saddens me, and moreso that I have lived long enough to span the richest part of it, and also the insidious infiltration of that isolating lifestyle.
Gregarious celebration of music, dance, the arts, sport has characterised us, along with a respectful instinctive granting of private space.
We also worshipped God together, and we're abandoning that. For me, the isolating drive towards exclusionary internalism, is part of the mechanism that intends to keep us from accessing a solution to it.

I suspect those who spend so much time with their pets may do so because of that unconditional love experience. In a world where so many people experience unkindness and harshness of others, they may retreat to this 'relationship' that will not wound them. It isn't a substitute for human connection, I agree. But we must speak to the deep unkindness, even harshness, that so many sensitive souls experience that pushes them to retreat from the world. And so, we who are 'whole' -at least to the point we are not paralyzed in our ability to socialize-must, Must, practice being incredibly kind, make eye contact, seek the good of the other, at every moment, in every circumstance. We are responsible to heal this broken and lonely world.

One phone on the kitchen wall . No call, waiting no caller i . d. I love the internet for many wonderful reasons such as WOF, ect… but there is such a dysfunctional side to it . I feel the pressure on the young kids today, it’s palpable. I also see parents wanting to be “ cool “ to their kids … lots of young parents need to grow up. We knew everyone in our neighborhood. Moms stayed at home. They were the eyes and ears of the community. Kids were safe and could run around or ride a bike to a friend's house. There were no such things as play dates back in the 60s and 70s. Kids just knocked on doors and played with friends who were at home. Those were happy times.

I think that socially isolated people have always existed. When I was a kid, it was common for kids to form clicks and exclude or even bully those who weren't in their group. I went to Catholic school, and it amazed me that these kids could listen to the gospel about how cruel people were to Jesus during his trials and execution, take Communion, and then turn around and treat their peers with similar derision. Sometimes, unfortunately, even with increased awareness against bullying, kids are often not substantially different today. Now the friendless child at least has social media. Between the addicting nature of it and having learned not to trust in cruel irl relationships, it doesn't surprise me that some people today never form irl bonds.

One must be insanely arrogant to suggest knowing something of a God. It is by boldness, Moses became the world's worst navigator, by having one foot in some fantasyland. There is a fine line between fishing & standing on the shore, looking like an idiot. Fail to get the Jews to buy it for 2000 years & they should know who their Messiah is. Jesus is a fake, to immortalize the war against the Jews. Jesus Christ is crucified for all time in literature & the subjects of Rome are illiterate. Freud wrote, "The antidote to Christianity is literacy" & the joke is in the scriptures. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:" Galatians 3:13

As a Cognitive social sci guy who writes pieces on strategies for building bridges between dichotomous belief groups in a broken world of advancing states of Affective Polarization, I LOVE Bishop Barrons more socio-cultural pieces such as this portends to be. We need all the Godly intercession and advice possible to inform, arm and navigate the current of todays turbulent waters...What Dorothy Day once referred to as the Baptised persons primary modus operandi for "corporal and spiritual acts of Mercy", in our paths and towards this end. Remember Ephesians 6:12: ""...For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places..."

In addition to the argument brought forward it could be said that electronic media has raised the bar in some aspects that people feel disappointed when they go to a social gathering. For example, many of us follow Bishop Barron's Sunday homilies that are on steroids, but when going to Church, the presiding priest has little to share. Other examples relate to culture: there are sites where the presentations are far superior to what is to be got in person. Indeed, it is becoming a challenge to discern what is worthwhile watching on the screen versus going out among people, when disagreements can spoil your day.

We have a major problem in society when a dog is more important than a human regardless of the quality of human relationships. I think it’s very dangerous to lose proper perspective with our pets technology whatever. Some people are introverted by nature. I don’t believe it’s an excuse to hide away and use all these things as crutches and believe we are living as God wants us to live. A lot of us need to look into why we can have such compassion for an animal and not a human being made in the image of God. That’s the challenge. God says love your neighbor as yourself NOT love your dog as yourself But are we trying to be the light be saints I believe we need to make ourselves uncomfortable to grow We all need to be courageous myself included.

I became a parent a couple of years ago and I've noticed that almost every other parent I've seen in public (outside of Catholic circles) seems to park their kid in front of their phone or tablet and just has them watch nonstop videos to keep them pacified so they can either get something done like grocery shopping or simply so they can be on their own phones doing much the same. I think GenX was the last somewhat normal generation. Us millennials know that we are socially awkward because we observed our boomer parents interact pre-internet, but GenZ and Alpha are strangely confident in themselves despite being even more socially awkward. I think because their parents were glued to their phones and more socially isolated.

Quoting great saints & philosophers does nothing to reduce loneliness or find solutions for such. Suggesting that liturgical music and the beauty of Catholic cathedrals is what will draw the masses in for socializing is such an antiquated solution that is not only incredibly sad, but incredibly frustrating.

You are also not allowed to defend yourself in any way, nor are you allowed to explain the situation or your actions. People are expected to be positive even if they are being killed inside. The daily activities become nothing but pain. People are being taught to deliver such cruelty and laugh at the person they are hurting. So, people avoid human interaction as much as possible in such a society.

I wonder if going directly to the kids/parents and asking them to bring their playgroups to the church, or open them up to the church.... the same with intramural sports for kids. As a young mother I started up a Mom's Club that attracted over 150 moms inside of three years. Right now in my hometown, a group called "The Newcomers Club" has over 130 members... they sponsor events like card groups (Canasta, Sumba, Mahjongg, etc), walking groups, lunch groups, craft groups, sewing groups - including one that makes receiving blankets and quilts for babies, etc, etc... Note: The Moms Club even has a booklet online on how to get a group started. Our Moms Club group started small... my friend and I, then 12 people at the first meeting, 25 people by the end of the year - but it grew quite big, very quickly.

Find it. Consider: if there is a Protestant church in the vicinity which is serious, and which teaches the Bible, give it a chance. If anyone asks, and they will, tell them you're Catholic. I assure you that they'll be glad to have you with them. Here are some churches I can vouch for, though not always! The rot is widespread within Protestantism, too. But consider:
      1. Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.
      2. Presbyterian Church in America.
      3. Anglican Church in North America.
      4. Southern Baptist Convention.
There may be some excellent if rather small Wesleyan churches in your area. And however strange they may seem to you, do not dismiss non - denominational "Bible" churches.
I'm sure you have the good sense to avoid ( or walk out of ) churches which have big electronic screens and stupid, maddening "music."
I can't speak for the Southern Baptists, but the first three denominations have online "church finders." Consider going to them.
If you're an ardent, traditional Catholic, there almost certainly are others like you in the vicinity. Consider putting cards on bulletin boards at places like Whole Foods, cards which state in brief detail the sort of person you are, and that you would like to organize a prayer, Bible study, and fellowship group.
Maybe there is an Eastern Orthodox church in your vicinity. Don't give up. And ask God to lead you!!

Barron and friend ignore the elephant in the room: the means of production have changed: less union factory jobs, less public education, less church participation, and less government infrastructure mean more individualism and isolation. The agricultural era in villages had to unite to control nature. The industrial era worked by the standardization and synchronization of the factory with social opportunities in urban areas. Now with digital production, service jobs done remotely, people do not come in contact with each other as much. This ordeal of change is analogous to the Industrial Revolution when people suffered hardships such as a filthy environment, child labor and cholera. We need reform of society. And this will come by a new philosophy of life, a new metaphysics, new ground rules. Could the church help? yes. But the only thing that can produce meaningful change on a scale necessary is an FDR New Deal type program. People need to feel a part of something, secular as well as sectarian.

The title of this video is "Healing Antisocial America" yet, as is typical of Catholic scholarly commentary, there is an abundance of diagnosis but little or no prognosis. This conversation said nothing about "healing antisocial America." Very typical is stating statistics and discussing the cause and disparity of the situation the statistics represent, but nothing in regard to any suggested solution. As a Catholic scholar myself, I have read many essays on various issues within the faith as well as the human condition in general. The issues are well documented with no suggestions to address the them. When I clicked on this video I fully expected what I found and described above.

I would say that it would be better to distinguish between the person and the individual, so that I am a person in community, rather than an individual within society. I would also contrast the collective, which found its expression both in Soviet collectivism and I would argue, the collectivism that you find it certain expressions of capitalism. In both the individual becomes a cog in the machinery of either the collective or the factory.
So the real goal is a kind of personalism as opposed to individualism, because we are persons in community.

St.Pope John Paul II spoke about the 'person' in his writings, and of course he spoke about the whole person soul and mind and body, one in Spirit, as Jesus and The Father and the Spirit are one.
The word 'individual' , especially here in the U.S., is closely related to what Americans think the Constitution means. It has evolved into connotations of political, social, economic, technological, and media influences, thereby taking the 'person' out of the individual. Maybe Bishop Barron can explore the writings of St. Pope John Paul II.

People dont even have to see each other in stores...they can buy online, and many do. If you go to a store, many of them have self-checkouts.....you dont even have to interact with a human. When you drive through a housing development, where are the kids who used to play in the yards and where are the basketball hoops? In the 40s and 50s, people had 4 or 5 kids and tiny 3-bedroom homes. Now people have huge houses and maybe 1 or 2 kids.
The elementary school I went to as a kid in late 50s had a large paved playground we were turned loose on for an hour after lunch. The school supplied jump ropes and balls. There were hop scotch squares painted on the pavement. You picked a bunch of kids doing something you liked and joined them. Kids made the rules and kids enforced them. The elementary school still stands, but the playground was swallowed up by a large addition to the school.
What is it about humans that, if given a choice, we stay away from each other?

I can't help but feel it's bit like the mice with nothing good doing more drugs in that experiment. If the phone is the best thing in their life, then that's not the phone's fault. It speaks to their whole life, world view etc. Currently both their phones are on my desk and haven't been used for 4 or 5 days, they haven't wanted them. Yes! We each have our own responsibility to limit screen time, and especially that of our children; Do as I do, not just do as I say. But in addition, the church has a responsibility to help create opportunities for TRUE integration among the faithful. Not JUST the mass, which is essentially a lecture, but true opportunities for people to meet and interact. WHAT a blessing that would be; truly God's work. ONLY offering the mass is like doing the bare minimum that Jesus asked the apostles to do.

I think you guys are spot-on here at 9:11 or so. I withdraw to pray, just as the Lord did and told us to do. Scripture reads "When you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret ; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly." (Matthew 6) It says the Lord withdrew to pray in the beginning of his ministry: "Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed. And Simon and those who were with Him searched for Him. When they found Him, they said to Him, “Everyone is looking for You.” But He said to them, “Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also, because for this purpose I have come forth.”" (Mark 1).
It also says in Luke 6 when he selected The Twelve he went to a mountain to pray, and even spent all night in prayer (I remember being daunted when I first read that). And in the Garden of Gethsemane the Lord told the disciples to sit "here" while he went and prayed "over there" (Matthew 26). Maybe the counterbalance is what Paul writes to Timothy about prayers to be made for all people everywhere (1 Tim 2), and the implication of praying corporately when we do it.

With all due respect, the removal of prayer from public schools has surely had an impact, but the Baptism rite clearly states to parents, "You will be the FIRST and BEST teachers of your children in the faith. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?" At the end of the day, it is the PARENTS' responsibility to teach their children the faith, including the things you have mentioned, not the state. Too many parents do not take their responsibility seriously enough. My sister sent her kids to Catholic school and thinks she fulfilled her Baptismal promises to them. But she never took them to church or talked with them about the faith or lived the faith herself. Today none of her now-adult kids are practicing Catholics, and she herself only attends Mass on Christmas Eve. The home is the domestic church, and what happens in the family matters more than prayer in public schools. (Just another view to consider...)

A newly born human baby is not told as s/he emerges from the womb, “Off you go! Get yourself somewhere to live and get yourself a job!” Even to become a hermit, you are totally dependent on having been nurtured and the human community to learn the essential skills for survival. And even hermits are affected by climate change and the passing human who is infected by COVID.

@22:53 I am undoubtedly an internet addict. However, I was clinically depressed before I was introduced to the internet. When I started using it obsessively, yes, it may have contributed to my depression. Again however, I was depressed before that. So this sounds more like a chicken and the egg argument to me. Although I know that personally, my clinical depression came before the internet.

    1. What is wrong with the Second Vatican Council?
The Second Vatican Council taught doctrines which had been already condemned by the Church, and enacted disciplines which are contrary to the Church's teaching and constant practice.
    2. What doctrines did it teach which were already condemned?
There are four major errors concerning: (1) the unity of the Church; (2) ecumenism; (3) religious liberty; (4) collegiality.
    3. What false doctrine does it teach concerning the unity of the Church?
Vatican II teaches heresy concerning the unity of the Church, namely that the Church of Christ is not exclusively identified with the Catholic Church, but merely subsists in it. This heretical doctrine is contained principally in Lumen Gentium, and its heretical meaning is confirmed in statements of Paul VI and his successors, particularly in the 1983 Code of Canon Law, in the 1992 Statement concerning Church and Communion, and in the Ecumenical Directory.
It is contrary to the teaching of the Catholic Church, contained principally in Satis Cognitum of Pope Leo XIII, Mortalium Animos of Pope Pius XI, Mystici Corporis of Pope Pius XII, and in the condemnations of the "Branch Theory" made by the Holy Office under Pope Pius IX.
    4. What false doctrine does it teach concerning ecumenism?
The teaching of Vatican II concerning ecumenism, which states that non-Catholic religions are a "means of salvation," is overtly heretical. This doctrine directly contradicts the teaching of the Church that there is no salvation outside the Catholic Church, called by Pope Pius IX "a most well-known Catholic dogma." In addition, the ecumenical practices which have resulted from this heretical doctrine are directly contrary to Mortalium Animos of Pope Pius XI.
    5. What false doctrine does it teach concerning religious liberty?
The teaching of Vatican II on religious liberty, contained in Dignitatis Humanae, nearly word for word asserts the very doctrine which was condemned by Pope Pius VII in Post Tam Diuturnas, by Pope Gregory XVI in Mirari Vos, by Pope Pius IX in Quanta Cura, and by Pope Leo XIII in Libertas Praestantissimum. The teaching of Vatican II on religious liberty also contradicts the royalty of Jesus Christ in society as expressed in Quas Primas of Pope Pius XI, and the constant attitude and practice of the Church with regard to civil society.
    6. What false doctrine does it teach concerning collegiality?
The teaching of Vatican II concerning collegiality alters the monarchical constitution of the Catholic Church, with which she was endowed by the Divine Savior. The doctrine of Vatican II, confirmed by the 1983 Code of Canon Law, which states that the subject (the possessor) of the supreme authority of the Church is the college of bishops together with the pope, is contrary to the defined doctrine of the Council of Florence and of Vatican I.
    7. What is wrong with the disciplines which have emanated from Vatican II?
The 1983 Code of Canon Law contains the heresy of Vatican II concerning the Church, mentioned above. It also permits sacrilege to the Blessed Sacrament, by approving of its reception by non-Catholics, which is a mortal sin, and permits communicatio in sacris (common public worship) with non-Catholics, which is a mortal sin. In addition, the Ecumenical Directory of 1993 permits ecumenical practices which have always been taught by the Church to be mortally sinful.

Ugly n clinical. It is no wonder the same few individuals feel pressurised to attend and their faces show it. I WON'T GO NEAR THE LOCAL CHURCH except for the 30min (max!!!!!!! sadly) on a Sunday. To be honest , I get more from my screen.

Dad left demoralised. I did not wait around too long. I am not kidding you but some are still ensconced in the parish council 50years later. One died last month so.....?

@declancooney1029 very sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately not all parishes welcome new ideas. My own parish in the U.S. has a high degree of member turnover due to our location, i.e. many universities and students who eventually move on, medical professionals completing residencies, business people taking promotions elsewhere, etc. It's a good thing as it keeps things at the parish fresh. But I can totally see how the opposite could also happen in areas where there's less human mobility. Is it possible for you to attend a different, more dynamic parish nearby perhaps?

I am in huge psychological suffering as a 66 solo all my life plus not anglo saxon and now entered Catholicism. The churches are highly cliquiish and antisocial to those who are not part of their cliques. So as much as I respect what Bishop Baron is saying and certainly agree with him but catholic churches today highly cliquish and insular. They reach out to their own married clans family and other friends who are married clans and family. Unlike non-catholic churches, they do not welcome make newer folks feel welcomed -- perhaps that's not in their philosophy anymore - No coffee time after Mass .
Just keep making sure they are preaching to families to make sure they're having children. So their church can go on in fact a very nice priest told me that very frankly. Truth and intent are not a match anymore. Catholic Church needs to stop thinking they're high-and-mighty and superior and look deeply within themselves and the community they're creating. It is clannish and exclusive and critical of all that is not Catholic which is not what Jesus Christ was about at least to me as a newer Catholic.
Fortunately, my closer ties with Christian religion are those in Christ based non Catholic communities - In my opinion, they re walking much closer to Jesus Christ in actions and always im the word. As a Catholic, I do attend Mass regularly.
