  • It is the year of 2020 and we might think that humanity has come a looong way when it comes to sexuality. But, in reality, the tolerance of non traditional romantic relationships is far from ideal. Even though we’re starting to accept same-sex relationships on a global scale, to this day, some countries still have a death penalty against untraditional relationships.
But this video is not going to be about sexual preferences. Even though sexuality as a whole is intricately connected to expressing our emotions through dance, we’re going to narrow our point of discussion to just that - same sex, or same gender in dance sport.

What are your thoughts on the future of dance sport?

    • @camilirri001

my thoughts are: WHY THE HELL ARE THEY TRYING TO RUIN SUCH AN AMAZING SPORT!?
DanceSport has been evolving from a tradition that took place a long time ago, and we should respect its basics. Just as we respect the basic steps of every rhythm and create a choreography based on those, we should respect in the same way the basic essence of DanceSport which is a MAN and a WOMAN telling a story together. DanceSport is not about emotional or personal partnerships/relationships (even though it is common), it is about discipline, elegance, practice, telling a story while performing a sport, respecting rules and parameters of competition. You can do as you want with your personal lives, but don't mess with such a beautiful sport.

the world is changing. for a lot of women - It's hard to find male partners who are really good dancers to dance with. but in dance classes, we are encouraged to dance "around" and with whatever partner comes up as the inner or outer circle rotates to the next one. That being said, leading is a skill that is hard to come by. As with all things in life - it's complicated. And it will take time to work it all out.

Anybody who takes on learning the other role (specially on a Pro Level), more power to them! But if a male-male couple only wears black in a Pro Latin heat versus an female-male couple where the lady wears a very beautiful provocative dress with stunning make-up, I'll be looking them and not the Same-Sex couple. So fellow Same-sex couples don't shy away from colors and rhinestones!
I also feel that if Same-Sex events (separate from the traditionnal ones) or reverse role events in Pro-Am hearts would have been allowed within every organization on every Competition we wouldn't be here. (I personally e-mailed about this to the organizations, one said yes, the other one didn't).
At the end of the day, dance should be fun and everyone should be dance whoever makes them happy.
Thank you for this video Egor and for interviewing all the Pros and Judges

Thank you, Egor, for shining a spotlight on this important issue. USA Dance created the term Gender Neutral because it is inclusive of all possible configurations of a couple - two men, two women, a female lead with a male follow, and anyone who may identify outside the gender binary or who is in transition between genders. While USA Dance has embraced "same-sex" competitors in separate divisions since 2014, the Gender Neutral Committee of the Dance Sport Council was formed November 1, 2018 to ensure thoughtful implementation of fully integrated events.
We have had conversations with our event organizer and adjudicator committees to ensure their concerns are addressed. We are in the final stages of revising the competition and costuming rules to reflect the new changes. The USA Dance GNC welcomes a dialogue with all interested parties on this topic. Please send your respectful thoughts and comments to genderneutral@usadance.org.

we tried it in holland.... didn't work... stopped after 2 years or so... it's just different to judge same sex to mixed sex couples... the other sex just moves different (leader or follower).. best thing is to have all lady, all men and mixed couples in there own comp. (can be on same day.)

Completely agree with you! Nothing against same sex, on the contrary, seen enough comps, interesting enough. But you can't compare.
Nevertheless, increasing the numbers of participators of our *deeply* beloved dancesport is *always* positive, so *everyone* should be welcome.

That’s not completely true in the Debutanten levels there are still same sex competitors mixed in the regular field. But I do agree that it is not a comparible on all the different aspects. I can not do the same thing in 10cm heels as I can on my trainers. I do love seeing same sex comps though.

@@StudioMargalima. I posted my comment as i see it but I'm so glad to see this video because its a conversation that was inevitable we need to have. I live in one of the worlds most populated gay cities and recently passed gay marriage into law so the gay community is being more embraced here than most other places. Dancesport since I started decades ago has always welcomed lgbtq people, infarct they are strongly represented within the sport in my country and many are on committees and governing bodies so I can understand the desire and influence to take the sport in this direction. The problem dancesport has in my county is attracting males of any kind straight or gay into it. The sport again to ensure its survival is wanting to head in a bold and brave new direction. I just hope it doesn't shoot itself in the foot as it has done in the past and further tear this sport apart which is fragmented enough. I'm not against this move but I do have reservations as to how well it will wok. One thing is for sure though, it will change the dancesport landscape forever.. Whether for better or worse will remain to be seen. I'm long retired, so it doesn't affect me either way.

Thank you for covering this! I have been trying to fuse same-sex and LGBTQ+ rights to ballroom for so long and it's nice to see this wonderful change. I believe it's going to give space to more ideas and imagery to showcase the beauty and skill of dancesport to all types of audiences. The spectators are going to have fun with it. And it's not a situation of NOW YOU HAVE TO BE SAME SEX COUPLED. it's just inclusive and it's nice to dance with all of our friends same-sex or otherwise!

My thoughts are in the professional scheme, it's gonna be a lot harder for judges to judge same-sex couples and traditional couples.
The rules have to be changed to compensate for same-sex couples. For example, a man-man couple, is the follower dressed as a woman or man? Do they wear heels or not? Is the follower moves like a man or a woman? And this is very confusing to me actually.
Maybe we need a different category for each gender. The traditional, men-men, and woman-woman category. Just not put them on the same floor at the same time. That way it's going to be easier to judge for judges. And competitors can have the same amount of chance to win from other couples.

I believe whether this is good for dancesport as a whole will entirely come to how this is implemented.
Over the decades the follow role has evolved to a very feminine one, and the leading role to a masculine one. To have a same sex couple compete within traditional dancesport will transform these roles.
If these roles are redefined on a national rather then an international level I fear a rift will appear within our sport. Countries for this reevaluating of lead and follow roles will show completely diffrent dancing. Not to mention being able to compete internationally as a same sex couple.
If not properly managed I fear another mayor discussion within the dancing world. I think we all remember what happened the last time we could not agree on something this fundamental internationally last time.
Personally, I don't care who you dance with. Man or woman, it's all about the dance.
But let's be clear that this is a major shake up that we need to manage carefully.

I don't know if it is perceptive, but if a man or a woman can have the role of leader and follower : man follower with a man and woman leader with a woman. Is it possible that one day a couple will be formed with a man as follower and a woman as leader ?

‘One day’? People do this all the time socially and in equality competitions. It’s perfectly possible and a lot of fun.

I’m a collegiate ballroom dancer, and I am a female leader with a male follower for latin. I don’t think gender should matter at all for who leads and who follows.

The implementation of this is absolutely critical in its success or failure, full stop. It has to be a completely level playing field in every respect or you will have an inevitable uprising and discontent and some will leave the sport,. There is already more than enough unfairness and biases in dancesport without the risk of adding more. i can see biases from straight and gay adjudicators because of personal preference or even prejudices and other gremlins that will have to be dealt with so I hope the people that head up this experiment give everything really deep consideration before implementing anything. There are many gay people involved in many sports and it works perfectly well. The difference is in these sports its near impossible to pick the gay person from the straight one. I don't suspect that will be the case in our sport (and therein is a major gremlin) and i see that could be a huge dilemma. The problem i foresee in in the advanced to elite levels, because I have yet to see a man, as good as they might be with the suppleness, flexibility, feminine charisma that can do what a female can. Vise versa for the ladies. As an example why in classical ballet that only the females dance on their toes and wear tutus, There are physical differences and a completely different energy. For me its confusing when I see a man with masculine features like a beard and masculine hairstyles etc trying to portray femininity. I hope they get this right and this doent turn out to be the final death nell for this beautiful sport which doesn't need any further discontent and upheaval in it. Give it a shot in my opinion. It will either work or it wont . I only hope the damage to the sport (If any at all is repairable afterwards).

Firstly, I think if this becomes a common international practice, it could be the end of dance sport in Russia. Since we have a law prohibiting LGBT propaganda among minors. Unfortunately, society is not always tolerant. Secondly, if there are mixed competitions, it seems to me there will always be a doubt whether the same-sex couple won because they are better, or because the judges were afraid that they would be accused of non-tolerance. Sorry for my English.

I don't see the big deal. The men in Ballroom and Latin American already look very effeminate anyway so what if they wear dresses or trousers. I'd be interested to know if this was always the case or if there was a point in history when the men/leaders stopped being clearly masculine and started adding feminine touches to the dance,

  • @samanthaaustin77

as juniors we danced in all girls, boy girl, and open (i.e. both) comps. Some all girl couples regularly beat the boy-girls. I thinks it'd be best to have the same sex comps and mixed gender couple comps, and the all-types-of-couple comps, all on one day. Gradually judges will become more used to compare them all against each other, but in the early years of this it would be more fun and fair to have separate comps too.
