Hi everyone! I hope you guys have been safe and healthy during all this. I realized that so much of the protocol must have changed at ODS since I went in June 2019. As of today (06AUG2020), I've been following some people on their IG going through ODS now. It seems like everyone is being quarantined for 2 weeks at a hotel, getting meals delivered 3x/day, and expected to join in on online lectures with socially distancing PT. After testing negative, they will be moving back to King Hall to finish the rest of the program; I'm suspecting they won't be able to go outside of base like I mention in this video :/ Overall, I hope you'll find tidbits of information from this video still helpful. Thanks for watching. Stay safe out there :)
(21JAN2021) Hello everyone. It looks like the ODS website has been updated and has all the info you will need. All the links should be up to date in the description box as well! www.netc.navy.mil/Commands/Naval-Service-Training-Command/OTCN/ODS/
Thank you so much for this video! It was very helpful. I'm a very slow eater and addicted to coffee so I'm glad I have two years to mentally prepare myself for that change. 😅
My dentist went through school with the navy. I asked him why would they have dentists on ships. He explained to me if a crewman whether a pilot or other had a dental emergency on board, they couldn't send them ashore.
Unfortunately, medical/dental emergencies can go awry on ships. We try to take care of everyone’s needs before deployments, but sometimes time/scheduling/manning needs can cause conflicts. Much needed in those situations! Plus, everyone is required to have dental exams updated every year as well.
As a D2 with Navy HPSP I hope you keep making videos about life as a Navy dentist! Do you know if credentialing tours generally last 1 year and then what the likelihood of getting shore vs sea duty is? It's hard to find good information about being a Navy dentist and I'm trying to figure out how likely I am to be on a ship for 2 years or what the daily life of a Navy dentist even is. Thank you for your videos!
Credentialing tour is always 1 year. Then, you get contacted by your detailer with a list of available billets and rank them. They try their best to get you at least something near your top 5 picks but it is not a guarantee. You most likely won't be placed on a ship or overseas if you don't ask for it.
Hi! Firstly, thank you for the videos! I am a nurse and I have ODS on July 24th. Was it a big deal when you had to overpack due to your moving situation? Do they limit what you may bring whether that is quantity or are specific items banned?
Hello! Congrats on your acceptance in the Nurse Corps/ODS :) No, they did not care how many bags I brought. It just might be difficult for you when you have to pack and move out though. If you can coordinate your household good shipment to match up better, you probably won't have to bring so many items haha. If you have your orders, most airlines have a policy where you can bring up to 5(?) bags for free so check each airline if you'd like. Hope this helps. Best of luck!!
Great question. Take your medical/dental records from ODS to your first duty station. I brought my civilian dental record, but they will still update your exam. You’ll need medical records for immunizations (or you might have to get more shots 😟).
@@harrrMONICA thanks so much for your quick response! I'm having trouble accessing my records So as long as it's just extra shots that's not so bad. Thanks for the great content
in your video, you mentioned you knew you were going to San Diego after ODS... how did you know? I thought you didn’t figure out where you’re going until the middle of ODS? -thanks for the help!
Hi Natalie! Your detailer is suppose to tell you in advance before you head over to ODS. You might not know the exact clinic, but you'll know the base/city you have been assigned to when you get your official orders (:
Do you have access to your phone the entire time? I’ll likely still be trying to set up my living situation around that time so access to email and such will be important 😅
Sorry for the late comment; i'm on a long break from YT. but OMG I feel so bad. I bet you've already gone through ODS and are now working LOL..... but for anyone else asking... no access until the day is over. I will say... I did sneak my phone to check during bathroom breaks though LOL.
Are you saying to request your navy medical records ahead of ODS to have them on hand? I was under the impression ODS received all your medical information by the time you arrive.
Correct. I was awarded the Navy Dental HPSP when I found out I got into dental school. I swore in as an O-1/ENS. I completed 4 years of dental school and commissioned into an O-3/LT. I went to ODS a month after and have been serving active duty since then.
It was called ois at one time my sister went through it after her first year of medical school . It was in the.summer one of her instructors was a nurse . They paid for her medical school also became a flight surgeon. Do you skip lt jg ? After graduation from dental school ?
Hi! Yes, there is a swimming test. Watch part 3 of my series and I go over the specific tests :) And no, but you do want a competitive GPA to be awarded the scholarship.
What if you have a family husband and children? Can you not take them with you? Or can you not have any family or get pregnant during your service times ?
It depends on the set of orders. Some places (mostly overseas), you may have to go unaccompanied. You can definitely have a family during your service. They can't deny that right from you!
Hi, My name is Diego and I am joining the Navy Reserves. I get sent to Great Lakes in August. I had a couple of questions about the reserves. Do you know if navy reservists have to report to a school after Navy Bootcamp? If yes, do you know if it's right away or we get some days off? Do you know of any rates that do not require a long period of time? Thank you for your time.
Hello! I apologize, but I'm not very familiar with the reserves bc I haven't had the experience or spoken with many people that were a part of it. I wish I could help you, but I would reach out to the correspondent or sponsor at your clinic in Great Lakes for more information.

We were definitely not able to go off base, which was a total bummer.

That's good to know. I was wondering how covid would affect things. Do you know if family is still able to come to graduation?
@@tracivose6397 I’m unsure of how they’re running it now. Per recent conversations with new credentialers, it did not seem like they were allowed to.

Yes you can. You'll just store it in your wardrobe.
Hey! Thank you so much! Do nurses have to go to OCS or just ODS?
We had nurses in ODS!

the links for navy knowledge and ods item checklist do not work for me ://
Some of the things on the knowledge sheet are the Sailor's Creed, Mission of the Navy, 11 General Orders of the Sentry, Chain of Command...etc.
