Looking forward to playing with this. The key for me is that this synth actually features 'sine waves', most of the budget synths have saw triangle square etc. The second LFO means you can get some cross rythmns going on within a patch. This synth has a lot of promise for the price. The real time sequencer is a welcomed change to the typical step time sequencers.
get my Skulpt delivered tomorrow, took day off work for it, can't wait, watching this stream live tonight in eager anticipation, be looking to you for lots of hints and tips, no pressure!
Nice one. This is a general overview and an exploration of some patches - not a total in depth review as such. Im sure that will come though :) This was a livestream so it is un-edited etc so apologies for any rambling :)
Thanks a lot for the overview! Love the Skulpt. Thank god the days of "Only analogue sounds fat and is desireable..." are over. I dig both, my analogue and my digital synths. It's just all about the question: "Does the sound of this machine trigger emotions in me or not." Simple as that ; )
Liked your tutorial/review very much. Very informative and ckear. Bought the SE and the Craft 2.0. Both very impressive little machines but big sound and possabilities ! Thank you.
Do it. I got mine..uh...two? three? days ago....🤔 #needsleep Watch some newer videos. The editor is fantastic and it works with Craft 2 as well (get that one too...!) 😎👍
the nordlead 2x (and I assume the older ones, too) had this synced noise where noise became a wavetable whne sync was on - I actually hoped this one would pick up this (pretty cool) idea. In fact the most interesting sounds of the NL2x came from that.
Glad I could help! Don't forget to check out the free editor for this - it can speed up navigation of the synth parameters if that works better for you.
the SonicState crewe can be SO FUNNY.... today it was hilarious, and informative..... gonna study a bit on Amplitude Modulation.... really looking forward to the SKULPT hitting the retailers !!!!!
i wish i had the gear with more VCA and Env so i could try out your suggestions !!!!! regardless, its Great having folks like You and Matthew to LEARN from !!!!
Ooh , nice , looking forward to this ... slightly regretting ordering the black addition, as I can’t read the writing very well. Really need to learn what’s what and where it is.
Yes it arrived yesterday 👍🏽🤘🏽😀. Yea , I’ve used the Mac app , it’s really good , and very handy indeed ... however I can’t figure out how to connect the iOS app .
Thanks for a nice overview, i have a small correction. The USB midi i/o only but not audio. Audio only via the analog outputs. Been fiddling with it myself, thought it would be possible.
@@matthsmatthsmatths I love it already. At first glance it could appear basic but it's got a broad pallete and a few tricks up its sleeve. Cant get it to appear in Cubase though...
Nice demo... great explanations... cool unexpected sounds. Is MIDI USB only? Please do another video on the sequencer. Wonder how this pairs with the other micro-synth -- UNO?
Thanks for the overview! I'm loving my SKULPT thus far. I am noticing some things. There seems to be noise when I'm not hitting notes. It changes from one patch to the next but noise seems to be present almost always. I also notice that the audio levels seem lower than other hardware. I did a jam last night with some Volcas and the SKULPT couldn't really be heard over them without bringing in overdrive. My headphone volume is also lower than expected. Do you think they can make it stereo in a firmware update? Its not the end of the world, I could just add some widening in post, but I bet this thing would sound glorious in stereo. Also, can you turn off the metronome when recording a sequence?
Hmm not sure whats going on there. Have you got the master volume all the way up (far right dial)? Is this the same on all patches? If so, I would try a firmware update or contact Modal. Very strange! I believe the metronome can be turned off - but I don't have SKULPT in front of me right now to check.
@@cultofours2648 I agree with yr comment about the Mono audio output, see my long diatribe about mono audio and modern dsp based synths, These days mono audio output is not acceptable,, especially with a huge stack of detuned oscillators. See Sonic Lab review for Nick Batt's comments about this shortcoming. J Horrobin
There is a vst app that comes with the synth but that seems to disable recording of the knobs - you have to write automation instead. I prefer to record midi by tweaking the knobs
I would like to get one of these but according to Modal , two shops should stock this but Absolute Music in Bournemouth do not list it and Andertons of guildforddo not list it.also, Gear4music do not list it either, Where would I get this thing from in the UK ,is it made in the UK (poss Bristol) or China, I can't buy it anywhere in the UK. There is no way I would say that something was great if it were not. The repercussions of this would be a lot of people coming back to me saying how rubbish it was and that I had inflated ideas about it. My work with the company extended to essentially beta testing and providing feedback on the development of the synth. Hope that clarifies things.
Most of the reviews accentuate the good points no end but omitting to mention the fact that it has a dual mono audio output. which is clearly a shortcoming. You mention eurorack , that could explain why you find mono audio acceptable. . The d50 and many others were stereo out in 1987 so how come this downfall does not get a mention ??? A very simple feature to observe and in my opinion is a deal breaker, I like a bit of stereo sound, Would you listen to monaural music on a media player ??? And any electronic music producer would never present or master a finished music file in mono audio. It is a toy.
@@johnhorrobin8560 The Roland D50 was £1,445 at launch... around £3.5k in today's money. Comparing the two is a bit silly, no? And how does not having a stereo output make a synth a toy? My Moog Sub 37 only has a mono output and I think most people would consider that a professional instrument.
JOHN HORROBIN - personally I don’t like stereo outputs, takes up extra channels on my mixer which is currently maxed out at 32. A lot of folk will be using this with a stereo reverb or my personal favourite ping pong delay. It’s not a groovebox, you’re supposed to use it with other gear so your comparison to a finished recording in mono doesn’t work. But of course each to their own.
Top notch overview, I've had my Sculpt for a week and you've explained a load of stuff that I didn't understand!...👍

Great review Matt, missed this originally & have been after a desktop VA poly for a while. From what I've seen I think it will do the job perfectly.
Nice one Steve - enjoy!
Pre-liked this vid just because of who it was.[EDIT] and the killer tip/hack at 3:00 justified it!
