As the DM, you are not the one "planning" when the party adventure. If my party is a group of drow, old volo Kobold, gloomstalker, shadow sorcerer and shadow monk, and they decide they aventure during the night and take there long rest during the day, other then sending random encounter during the long rest you are powerless.
And most adventure that I know happens indoor, where direct sunlight is minimal and easily avoidable. I mean clearing the basement of the local pub from the rats, attacking the bandit/kobold/goblin harassing the traveler on the road in their cave, searching the ruins of an old castle, clearing the undead filled catacombs, etc... sunlight is a rare thing in DnD. Even more mandatory sunlight the player cannot avoid. (even the bandit on the road, unless the DM play AGAINST the players, the bandit are probably attacking at sunset, sunrise or at night, instead of in broad day light.
Then no Drow and Shadar-Kai are NOT the same thing. One is a race kidnapped by their Goddess and enslaved and twisted deep underground. The most known ones are corrupted by this Goddess who trained them to backstab each other making them inherently chaotic evil. But many escaped and created enclaves to venerate other gods and have a different alignment.
While the Shadar-Kai willingly followed their Goddess into a mirror dark reflection of reality nd adapted to this new environment.
and yes I truly believe that the difference between having your society spit in 2 (an evil half and a not necessarily evil half) kidnapped by their Goddess, VS a society united under a single Goddess that you follow willingly... make a huge difference in the character background.

@sohkaswifteagle2604 I'd totally be fine with a party wanting to adventure at night. Normally, when a player has wanted to play a drow in one of my games, it was for the aesthetic and it wasn't a group of players that had a similar theming. I feel like most parties I've DM'd for or been part of, they've traveled during the day and rested at night. I've been in games in the Shadowfell where sunlight isn't much of a concern and there are certainly DMs running games in the Underdark.
I also 100% know that the Drow and Shadar Kai aren't the same. I just think if you are going for a dark elf aesthetic and don't want any possible drawbacks from sunlight sensitivity, the Shadar Kai are a better option most of the time. Even without combat, it's nice to not have disadvantage on perception checks if you're traveling.
      To each their own.
