  • This week, we’re bringing our next insight into Kenyan coffee, visiting Peter of Kamavindi Coffee in Embu.
Peter is producing several varietals familiar to buyers of Kenyan coffee, from SL28 to Ruiru 11, but he is also proudly farming 300 Gesha trees on his estate in Embu. He operates his own wet and dry processing and in this video, he shares his insights into the key contributions to cup quality at a farm level.
Thank you to Peter for hosting us and sharing his knowledge and experience with us.

Wow I'm so surprised to see how much attention the farmer puts into the result of the final cup, even gaging the final score... I thought they simply farmed the best cherry they could and not think much about what comes after. Thank you for the very informative video.

Peter here stands out a lot in the world of Kenyan farming. Every origin has a range of farmers and the understanding for the farming and processing aspects of their work changes. But they all share the same passion.

It was great to actually virtually visiting the farm like this and hear an true and heartfelt story with no filtering.
Knowing the reason and the stories of the varieties of beans that came to be produced like this, I'm looking forward to receiving or purchasing Kenyan beans next time as a subscription, and I think I'll enjoy it.
Thank you so much to Peter, too. 😊😊

Thank you for watching. Is there any origin in particular that you would want us to explore?

@@coffeewithapril If you were to ask me this question before seeing this video I would definitely say Kenya, as individual farmers rarely get any attention because of the way the industry is set up there.
No particular origin comes to mind, I think individual farmers should get more attention and that the industry should lower its focus on labeling the terroir of coffees, and rather focus on individual farmers' practices as their contribution and work are reflected in the cup way more than "Terroir". Thank you for being a pioneer in these types of videos and information to the coffee community.

This is a brilliant insight into some of the depth of thought that goes into high quality coffee farming. Thank you for producing and releasing this for our learning! 🙏

Myself, my wife and 2 friends did a cycle tour through Rwanda last year. We ended up at visiting a washing station that grew their own coffee, did various types of processing and even roasted on site. They didn’t actually offer tours but did one for us. It was an incredible experience. This tour reminds me so much of that. Thanks for the video guys! Probably my favourite April video too date. Peter seems like such a wonderful guy. His love and passion for coffee is clear as day

Appreciate this video. I’m only ~3 or so years into truly specialty coffee, but Kenyan coffees are still my most coveted. I think it shows your adoration for the profiles you were able to enjoy from past harvests. Trying to gain a better understanding of the landscape, and sharing the producers will hopefully only aid in the sharing of knowledge to allow these workers to support themselves and their families with a better product even with all of the circumstances at play.

Thank you for watching and sharing Mikey. Absolutely. The reality is that most SL28 tastes better outside of Kenya these days. But there are people like Peter that acknowledge the challenges and they are putting in the effort to put it back on track.

Thank you for watching. The coffee has been picked, processed and milled. At the moment we are waiting for confirmation on shipping and we plan to release the coffee early summer.
