So because of technical issues there are certain parts of the script I wrote for this essay that was left out. One thing I didn't get to mention is how the film uses liquid emotion [Sweat/tears] to add a level of emotional authenticity to the actors in the puppet suits. Things like tears and sweat are used to make the Turtles and Splinter feel like living and emotional characters. The other films focus more on being cash grab films that are apologies to parents who thought the 1st film was too dark and violent. Director Steve Barron mentioned that he wanted the Turtles to feel like more than a cartoon and more like human beings. The films cinematography goes for a more early 80s independent film aesthetic similar to the film Chinatown starring Jack Nicholson as opposed to a kid friendly family film. After director Steve Barron was fired from the film by the producers, the studio hired editor Sally Menke who would go on to edit every Quentin Tarantino film up until her death from a heat stroke in 2010. Sally Menke was also fired from the movie...smh.
This movie awakened me to the world of martial arts. Before that all I ever saw were hand chops and half assed karate kicks in old movies and cartoons. Seeing the Turtles being so agile pumped me up but it also made me wonder why the cartoon TMNT never fought like that.
TMNT will always have a place in my heart. I always thought the original movies and TV shows did it right. I loved how you broke everything down for us. I learn a lot from watching your video essays.
I'm ashamed to admit that the second film, Secret of the Ooze, was my first venture into TMNT. I saw it even before reruns of the 80s cartoon. But i enjoyed that film and went back to watch the original later on. I was shocked at how darker the original film was in comparison. But i like both in different ways.
Omg sailor I am the same. Grew up with the second one and watched second one later and was suprised how dark it was too...I was so scared when I saw shredder appear on screen with the thundering 🥁 soundtrack...and he's Cape and Metal Helmet...ooof
I was born in the early 80s so I had no choice but to be exposed to the TMNT. Like most people my age I watched the 80s series religiously, but as you might be able to tell from this video, I think the 1990 first film and the 2003 series are the best adaptations. I also love the IDW comic series. Thanks for watching this video, I worked really hard on it and appreciated the positive comment. - Cytonius
Thank you. Appreciate the comment. The funny thing is that I left some things out. The 1st Turtles film is one of the greatest comic book films of all time but nobody talks about it like that.
Amazing review. The 1990 TMNT movie is IMO based on all you described, the definitive take on the characters. And mythos. Perfect blend of Mirage and 80s cartoon. Template for all that followed. Including the much underrated 2k3 cartoon
Thanks for the positive feedback. Tmnt 90 is one of my favorite movies. This video was supposed to drop last year on the 30th anniversary of the films release but I was having life stuff to deal with. I also did a video on the 2003 Tmnt series, you might like that one as well. -Cytonius
Still one of the best comic based movies to be ever done especially live-action based. Keep in mind no CGI was used and the Turtle suits weighed about 60 pounds each. Almost certainly a top 10 of comic based movies for live action and a top 20 overall which includes non-live action. Might even make the movie more impressive considering that the budget was comparatively very small. Henson Productions did a brilliant job also this was one of Jim Henson's last big projects before his death
Very True, there was a lot of production stuff I didnt discuss because I know that is available elsewhere. The original budget for the film was actually 7 million but the producers managed to get an additional 6 million. - Cytonius
There's a longer version of this video that I wrote that got lost when I was making it. My computer crashed as I was writing and editing so the last 10 minutes are under written. I'll be exploring the TMNT films in future videos. Appreciate you 🙏
They need to get that footage left on the cutting room floor and put it back in the 1990 tmnt movie i was hoping they did that shit for the 30th anniversary at the fathom events showing but at the cinemark bistro on monroe and sardis charlotte nc i went to was an awful showing of it the film didnt show the first part of the film and it didnt feature the deleted scenes featured in the foreign releases like leonardo extra martal arts choreography in aprils apartment and they left out april and danny pitching the tmnt as a comic to a comic company
To be honest, I left out at least 15 minutes worth of content on this video. I didn't get to discuss deleted scenes of the Shredder, I didn't discuss John Duprez and his score, I didn't discuss the under appreciated cinematography and how the film uses liquid emotion to make the turtle suits look alive ( The suits in this film have more sweat on them) I didn't discuss the voice actors such as Brian Tochi as Leonardo, Josh Pais as Raphael or Robbie Rist as Michelangelo or film editor Sally Menke. I appreciate your positive feedback.
If Secret Of The Ooze had kept the first film's darker tone I'd swap out Tokka & Razhar with Slash who frames the Turtles for murder, resulting in a Mask Of The Phantasm esque police chase sequence.
The Secret of the Ooze was actually supposed to be a darker film, but the producers changed the tone to match the 80s series. Thanks for watching this video. Cytonius
Thanks. This video was made as my computer was dying so there's information that I left out including things about the Hong Kong actors in the suits like Mo Yuen and the deleted scenes with the Shredder. So there's about 10 minutes missing.
Wow bro can't believe you did this! So so love your channel hope it gets bigger! You hit my favourite things, btw would you be into making more things on bprd and hellboy or nah your finished with those?

I absolutely love this movie and I passed my movie and turtles toys and stuff now we are both life long fans
Tight!!! I still have the 4 original figures from 88 and the first issue of the Mirage comics.

Oh yeah, naw I didn't forget, I owned the concert cassette from pizza hut.
I saw it at the show in Northern Virginia.
Donatello gets his moment in the 2nd film
This movie needs a directors cut
A director cut exists...just not in America. I think Germany released the only "directors cut" of the movie.
@omn8612 yeah I heard about that through ramboraph4life he has the dvd
I grew up with 2003 to 2009 series and 2012 to 2017 and 2018 to 2020
Dude please review The TMNT 2012 series it's not as good at the 2003 series but it's still good
