Confirming Monet: if you're a West Indian kid, and you're at a party or get together, your parent will allow you a sip or two. My mother never kept alcohol a secret; it was still understood that alcohol was for adults, but I'd know beer since I was six or seven, and everything else since I was nine or ten.
I have known a few drunks in Jamaica, but not "alcoholism" as defined in the US. **lol**
Add on: I only got drunk as an adult (on purpose) in college/university. I can go weeks without alcohol.

I also started drinking at 11, and like Bob, I ended up with Alcoholic Tendencies. So while its awesome that wasnt the case for you, it definitely happens like Bob said. My Mum would buy me and my close friends cases of beer at 12. As long as we stayed in. Definitely not the norm. But in my close friend group (welfares, as we were called) it was not uncommon. It’s very common in a lot of other countries to have kids try alcohol at young age to erase the urge and also liquor is thought to be okay in a lot of religions and cultures. Kids getting wasted no. But kids drinking small amounts of beer, wine, or small amounts of liquor is kinda common. Teenagers drinking at their home with parents present is very common among some of my friends and that’s wild.
