eGIS, Thanks for putting this video together. I was working with ESRI live support today escalating a work around for this same issue of the "Gotcha". Let's keep our fingers crossed that existing data in shapefiles and geodatabases will be linked like SDE and not copied.

You are welcome. I was just teaching an ArcGIS Pro class at NC State ITRE and talking about this issue,

Thanks Tripp it seems silly that as of ArcGIS Pro 2.9 five years later they still don't seem to mention this in the software or documentation. I've been going crazy trying to figure out why the project template wasn't just referencing data instead of copying 2GB worth of stuff for no good reason.

Great video, I'm wondering if this has been fixed. We are using ArcGIS Pro 2.8.2 and I want to use a system like this to replace our old office wide Base Map system. This system was a series of several maps with a ton of preformatted data and layouts, write protected, that a user could open, turn a few layers on and off, zoom to a POI, and then print a quality map. If needed for more in depth analysis, they could SAVE AS to a different folder.

I just tested it and it appears they have not fixed this issue. My guess is because to Esri it is not a problem and is working as intended.

@@eGISAssociates thanks for looking into it, I will find another method of doing what we need to do that then.

@@JeremyZimmerman As long as you configure the project template to use a UNC path instead of a mapped drive (I am assuming this data is stored on some sort of file server) then you should not have an issue. Or you could publish to ArcGIS Online or through Portal as well.

If you add the saved map files to a project template does it still create a duplicate of all the data within the maps?

Assuming you are referring to MAPX files, then yes it does unless the MAPX files reference data sources that are in an SDE database or that use a UNC path to get to the data source.
