  • There is a NEW version of this video with the single image of two dead terrorists REMOVED. It also has two minutes of additional footage with images of important mosaic sites we've visited since 2015, the year this was first posted. Here's the new title and location:

    My opinion is that mosaics are one of the most beautiful expressions of art. I can't get enough of it. I'm getting ready to build an adobe house in rural Arizona. In that, I will have floors that sport a rattlesnake, scorpion, deer, antelope and Gila monster. It will be encircled by a 5" wide tiled rope. The floor molding will be made of rectangular red tiles. I wish to have a Roman house such that it might someday be excavated and confuse the archeologists to all hell get out. It will be wicked pissa bad.

    informative video with lots of fab images. Would have been nice to have the names of the artists on the screen to refer to. I'm also unsure why there needed to be an image of dead terrorists int he middle of all of this. That was a bit disturbing for my kids to see. I didn't think I'd need to check through this before watching with them.

    An entertaining and very informative video with some fine images - although the Byzantine-era mosaics are my favourite, I'll definitely seek out visit the Grand and Petit Palais and Pasteur's tomb next time I'm in Paris, the mosaics there are exquisite. No doubt you are familiar with the astonishing Italian micro-mosaic work created from the Renaissance onwards - the Victoria and Albert Musuem in London has a wonderful collection.
    I have to agree with the other commenters, however, that the image of the dead men is rather inappropriate and incongruous in the context of a video about mosaics - I read Mr Taylor's explanation and understand why you chose to include this but surely this information could have been communicated in a less brutal and unexpected way, or a warning given at the beginning of the video? Nevertheless, thank you very much for this video.

    At 15:04, is that a special stained glass cutter, or is that cutting plastic; & where would one find that cutter for personal purchase, please? Thank you.

      I think you're asking about a "ring saw," which is a motorized cutting tool that spins a diamond-coated metal ring at high speed to allow cutting in any direction on tile or glass or any hard material that's not too thick. They are made by several companies, but the one you see is a newer one made by Taurus.

    how can you tell the difference between a roman and a greek mosaic ?

    • @paulam.6023
      @paulam.6023 7 років тому +2

      Abdelhadi Shalak you can see it by it's style and it depends on the epochs they were made. classical Roman mosaics for example can be black-white (silhouette style), but they could also be a "reproduction" of Hellenic wall paintings. classical Hellenic mosaics started with pebbles, but during the centuries Greeks invented a regional style that was different from the Roman one. the mosaics shown in the video with inscriptions e.g. are famous for one region/century. to answer your question: you can tell it by its style ( figurines, colours, inscriptions, ornaments aso)
