just a tip that I hope may help. When opening the valve on the tank just barley open the valve at first. If too much gas floods the regulator it may over regulate and not allow gas through. I learned this on a Blackstone grill and ever since then I follow this rule.
Did just as he said. Emailed Champion all my information, even sent photos. Received reply saying they had gotten my request. Received a replacement regulator, installed and tested. What was taking me 5-10minutes to start before is now taking less than a minute. Super happy with this video and the customer support from Champion. Charles, Champion 2250 dual fuel owner
I bought this for my husband because of hurricane IAN. We were out of power for three weeks and we just know got the 2500 Champion Generator. We followed the instructions of all your videos and read 90% of the reviews. He doesn't see why so many people had trouble with the instructions. If I can do it, and he can do it, anyone can. This started right up and ran it through the break-in. No problems in this house with Champion in our house we will be ready for the next storm. You'll hear from us next year. Thank you again. The Stevens Family. Yeah!!
This was a very helpful video thank you! I just bought a Champion 2500-Watt (was mfr'd in 10/2021). Could not get it started. So switched out to a brand new propane tank, and it finally started. The generator then started with my used propane tank (only a year old) but was a bit more finicky with that than my brand new propane tank. I still called Champion about my trouble-shooting and they are FedEx-ing me a new regulator to put my mind at ease. That is great customer service, honestly!! I bought this generator to run only propane as it's easier/cleaner for me (I always carry a spare propane tank; I don't want the gas going bad in the generator as I don't use a generator that often; less maintenance for me). Very happy with my purchase. Yes, I've used Honda in the past and they are gas workhorses. But I expect this Champion to be a propane workhorse for me.
Saw this video a couple of weeks ago. Did the same thing. Reached out, the sent me a new one. Hooked it up . . . Success! 30 seconds 4 pulls. Unplugged everything. Tried again a couple of days later. Make sure i wasn't imagining things. Success! Much appreciated.
Have two Champion 961 dual fuel generators. Both were made in April of this year. Had ridiculous time getting either one to start on propane. Champion told me they had a bad batch of regulators, and they would send me two new ones. Only one was shipped, so they are sending me another one. They won’t start at all with the new regulator. And every time I call their tech support, I have to wait on hold for over an hour.
I just had this crap happen to me. We had a storm move through and power went out. Go out and plug in the house turn on the tank. Nothing... nada... wouldn't even attempt to try to run. I got mad about it, but I finally just went and got some gasoline and put in it. BAM fired right up. I discussed it with Champion Tech and they came the conclusion that it was the regulator. Initially wanted to charge me for it, but I told them I was still within my 3 year warranty. So we'll see if the corrects the issue when they get it here. It is in stock so I figured I'll get it towards the end of the week or early next week depending on how and where they ship from. Thanks for the video, very helpful!
So I bought a Champion 200914 Dual Fuel Inverter Generator. Out of the box it started on propane no problem. Since it was Sunday I didn't want to make any noise so I turned the LP off at the tank. Yesterday I attempted to start it again on propane but this time no luck. After 20 minutes of it backfiring while trying to start it finally started up but didn't run as smooth as I had hoped it would. I let it run for an hour and let it cool down. I tried starting it again a couple hours later with no luck. I got on the web and found this video and figured that it probably was a bad regulator. So I called Champion Customer Service and was on hold for 45 minutes. I hung up knowing that they were pretty busy handling hurricane-related issues. When my son got home from work he tried getting it started with no luck either. It wanted to start but couldn't catch. I said let's for the sake of it check the spark plug. My son took the plug out and immediately saw that the TORCH F6RTC spark plug was split in half on both sides of the plug from the tip at the top as far down as the lettering on the plug. The tip where the boot attached was cocked at about a 20 degree angle. Not sure where or how the plug got damaged but first place to investigate when there is a starting problem is the plug. Went out and bought an NGK and I was immediately back in business. So there is another SOLVED Champion Dual Fuel Fix.
Good info, thanks. I did read the instructions for LPG and it says to pull slowly when "priming" the unit (4 times), then switch to "run" and pull up slowly to get compression, then pull all the way. Kind of reminds me of starting my old motorcycle, you need to compress the gas in the carb to get the best starting outcome. 🙂
Definitely a good idea to maximize the chances of starting it. I tried all of the tricks you could think for about 30 minutes and none of them worked. Once I got the new regulator, it started this fast every time.
It shluld be simpler than that in my opinion. My friend's old 1600 generator started easily despite tge fact the oil was not changed a d it was sitting in storage somewhere almost a year. Recoil unit in champion 2500 dual fuel is very low quality because it breaks down so easily. I used so many hours to get this generator to work. See' if you buy Toyota car (any model) how many hours do you have to spend to get the engine started? ... This generator is made in USA just like Ford and Chevrolet which filled up junk yards.
It did not work. Hours wated hoping it starts. Changrd oil' changed recoil unit. Plugged in LO tank with the filter in a vertical position. Nothing helps. I have to tons of patience to get someone from Chimp on the phone and hooefully return it.
Um, by pulling on the recoil starter until you feel the piston come up on the compression stroke, you're not exactly compressing the gas in the carburetor. Might want to re-think or reword that.
i work in the propane field and that check snap you heard when opening the lp valve was you check locked the valve you opened the valve to fast and locked out the lp valve flow you need to close it and open it slowly
Tim, makes sense. Only problem was the defective regulator never worked, regardless of how slowly it was opened. The new one clicks, too, but it works right away.
I have a different model but if you spray starter fluid into the carburetor that also solves the problem - probably a good idea to just have some (only like 4 bucks) on hand anyway as sometimes you'll run into this problem when you haven't started it in a while.
I bought my Champion over a year ago, could never get it to start on propane, but did on gas. (mine had that black plastic part, like the one you had first, that didn't start, but the second one didn't) I called them, they sent me a new regulator (didn't have the black plastic piece), and it started right up.
I found out the "CLICK" is the safety valve sensing a too fast pressure drop like a broken hose would do. The way around that is very slow pressure turn on with the valve. Then the stupid thing doesn't click and still puts out fuel with the "faulty regulator".
I thought the same thing, but couldn't ever get it to work with the original regulator. Started after just a few pulls with the replacement regulator that they sent me for free.
Yes, after having a similar problem with a small Weber grill and trying to blame the regulator, it was the safety valve in the tank being too sensitive. I never open the tank valve more than 1/3 turn. More is unnecessary, even with a generator under full load.
Problem solved!!! First, mount the regulator so it is vertical, i.e. so the hose comes out of the side. Second, with the gas tank valve open, insert a pin, needle, nail, etc. in the small hole in the center of the second stage for 10 to 15 seconds. This releases the diaphragm and the generator will start up per specifications.
Have had same problem on my 6 week old unit and was told by champion tech rep to do what this fellow has described----works fine-----but i do have to do this EACH time i run unit
I just purchased a new open frame Champion generator...model 201056. Features to avoid...CO sensor, remote start / electric start (battery maintenance), dual fuel, smart dial (integrated shutoff with fuel valve), closed frame (unless you need to have reduced sound for like campgrounds).
You may have to purge your regulator. There's a little hole right in the middle center that you can put a 1/16th Allen wrench in, or a paper clip, and press in. for five seconds. You should hear some hissing. then restart your. generator. Also open your valve very slowly.
Hmm, wonder if Westinghouse would do the same thing. I'm having the same trouble. But I have a much larger generator. I thought about the regulator and figured to get one, but nobody has the right one. I usually run mine of propane.
Change oil in duel fuel Champion after about 3 hours of run time with load on generator ( recommended to run with load on ) after oil change, won't start on propane -- Found out I had filled generator oil to recommended level -- topped oil off to top of threads and started right up !! Make sure oil level is NOT the starting problem !!
You win the internet. Came here looking for a solution to this problem on this generator, which I’ve had for a few years with NO problems. But it wouldn’t start after an oil change, and my friend you saved the day! 😂
I don't know if this will help someone else. I am breaking a 200961 on propane. I bought it knowing reviews say in can be hard to start on propane. I pull the cord in choke position a few times until I get a sign of life. Then I turn to it's sweet spot on the EZ dial, more than half way to gas. It has started on a few pulls, then I turn to propane position. I think I would pull a long time in the propane position. It performs well so I am not sure the regulator is faulty. Seems there is a bug or flaw in the design that for some it doesn't want to start in the propane position, me included. I really wanted to run exclusively on propane and a Honda with coversion is pricey.
Always have redundancy. If you are depending on a regulator, have two. My son learned many years ago that things I really depended on, I had two. We won't go into girls. Ya gotta have a backup. It's on airplanes, scuba, you name it.
Open up the the regulator very slowly to prevent of inrush gas because the regulator is designed to prevent gas leak. If not, then the the regulator will shut the gas off.
I'll admit I haven't read through all of these comments and maybe someone has already answered this question... But does anyone know why these regulators are going bad? Is there any way to restore them? (I have 3 now and Champion has been great about honoring their warranty, but I only have a couple months left in warranty and each regulator is $50 if you're not in warranty.) Finally, Are there any tips/tricks to helping them continue to function longer? My machine is much higher on hours than most, I am at almost 700 in 2.5 years. This is a great generator! It seems the only weak point is the regulator.
I have the 4650 dual fuel version , and the CO SENSOR won’t stop blinking. I have it 100 ft away from anything in ALL directions. I added fuel, I put the PROPANE tank, tried everything. Won’t start. It’s also in the shade , no direct Sun. Any idea what would keep them CO sensor on and blinking? Besides the obvious, there’s no way CO is in the area , have a home CO detector next to it, doesn’t go off
I wonder if the blue rhino tanks cause a problem. I might be wrong but I think they have a proprietary valve so you cant get them filled and have to exchange for another blue rhino. We don’t have blue rhino in the frozen north of Canada
Brand new champion. Won't start, got the new regulator/hose from factory (exactly the same brand/type as original). No joy. My arms sore and the battery (electric start) drained. Not something to be trusted for backup in a snowstorm... Returning, sadly, and will try another brand.
Hello I have a question about using gas or the propane part of the generator can I use only the propane part of it and when I do want to use the gas part of it do I have to let it run dry so that way there is no way of corrosion inside the tank and by using only the propane will that mess up the generator and anyway and how to store it also have you had any problems with that yet
Is the regulator they sent you a redesigned part with a different part number, or do they just send you a replacement regulator with the same old design?
I only run this Gen on gas. It ran great for two camping trips. On my 3rd trip the Gen randomly shuts off(no load) after about 30-45mins of running. I've cleaned the air filter, cleaned the spark arrestor and checked oil level. Any suggestion?
That's tough. I'd actually give Champion a call and see what they suggest. I was shocked how good their phone support was for this issue that you might find they have a solution for yours, too.
Other videos have mentioned that if your oil level is near the lower end of the fill port threads, the generator will sense low oil level and trip off. Fill your oil level more and see if that fixes the issue.
My Champion 2500 dual fuel inverter has a difficulty to start in both LP a d gasoline from the day one. It finally started working but pull starting was not always easy task. The result recoil unit broke down after three months. I called champion customer service several days and had to wait to get live person for 180 minutes i.e. 3 hours with no success. Interesting. Is the new regulator 100% identical to the old one? Any noticeable difference? I have the same gen set and it starts "ok" on the regulator usually. But I wouldnt mind getting a new and free replacement, just in case.
Wait until you realize that it spits oil out of exhaust and builds up inside case. Mine was sent back last week. I didn't believe the reviews but mine did the same shit.
EXTEMELY SUPER EASY CHAMPION NO START FIX: BUY A HONDA. I SOLD MY 2017 HONDA "EM4000SX" FOR $1,750.00 (WAS IN NEW COND.) PUT THAT MONEY TOWARD THE 2021 HONDA "EU3000IS" COST: $1,984.00 WITH MILITARY DISCOUNT FROM LOWES. MY GEN-SETS ARE FOR HOME STANDBY AND SHOULD EASILY LAST 20 TO 30 YRS. NO PROB.
@@joshualong7517 YOU ARE CORRECT ABOUT "THINGS NOT IN STOCK", I HAD TO DRIVE 500 MILES ROUND TRIP TO PICK UP EU3000. WERE IT NOT FOR THE "PANDEMIC", I WOULD BE LUCKY TO GET $1,000 FOR THE EM4000SX (GOOD TIMING?). IT IS HARD TO JUSTIFY THE HONDA COST. I LOOK AT THE PURCHASE AS COST OVER TIME. $2,194 (GEN. + TAX + A TANK OF GAS) DIVIDED BY 20 YRS OR 240 MOS. = $9.14 PER MO. GLAD YOU GOT YOUR GEN TO START. SHOULD PROPANE ISSUES AGAIN ARISE, YOUR GEN WILL START ALL DAY LONG ON GAS NO PROBLEM. YOU PROBABLY ALREDY KNEW THIS, FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT: Joshua comes from the Hebrew name "Yehoshua," meaning "God is deliverance." In the Old Testament of the Bible, Joshua was the Israelite leader who succeeded Moses and led the Hebrews to the Promised Land. Origin: Yehoshua is derived from yeho (meaning God) and shua (meaning to deliver or save). The letter Y was changed to an I in Latin and Greek and became a J in English. Jehoshua was eventually shortened to Joshua. Gender: Joshua is traditionally the masculine form of the name. Pronunciation: JAH-shoo-ah

Thats a common issue with the tanks, they have a safety valve and if too much flow is detected, it kills the flow.
Thats why you open slow

I have the same one but it will not start on gas and if I do get it to start and fun and I shut it off it will not start again any help would be nice
Interesting. Is the new regulator 100% identical to the old one? Any noticeable difference? I have the same gen set and it starts "ok" on the regulator usually. But I wouldnt mind getting a new and free replacement, just in case.
Yes, 100% identical, except it works every time😉
I have the same problem with mine. I suspected the regulator. I called Champion and they are sending a new one. It will be here tomorrow.
Glad you figured it out. Their support has been great.
"Ain't got no gas in it."
Wait until you realize that it spits oil out of exhaust and builds up inside case. Mine was sent back last week. I didn't believe the reviews but mine did the same shit.
That's a bummer!
i just called they were great are shipping it out to me today no questions asked
I am on my third regulator and it still won't work.
Good luck. I'm on my second and it still won't start.
You will end up like this man if you don’t follow instructions you can’t have anything plug 🔌 without warming it up
Soooo mine won't start on gas then what I replaced the sparkplug after first run
Junk. Imagine when it gets older
Looks like operator error to me.
Happy to mail you the old regulator if you'd like it😉
@@joshualong7517 i’ll take the old one
EXTEMELY SUPER EASY CHAMPION NO START FIX: BUY A HONDA. I SOLD MY 2017 HONDA "EM4000SX" FOR $1,750.00 (WAS IN NEW COND.) PUT THAT MONEY TOWARD THE 2021 HONDA "EU3000IS" COST: $1,984.00 WITH MILITARY DISCOUNT FROM LOWES. MY GEN-SETS ARE FOR HOME STANDBY AND SHOULD EASILY LAST 20 TO 30 YRS. NO PROB.
Honda's are great!
When I was looking, they were about 4x the cost of this Champion, assuming they were in stock anywhere.
YOU PROBABLY ALREDY KNEW THIS, FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT:
Joshua comes from the Hebrew name "Yehoshua," meaning "God is deliverance." In the Old Testament of the Bible, Joshua was the Israelite leader who succeeded Moses and led the Hebrews to the Promised Land.
I wish they were that cheap here
Does Honda make a propane model? No. That is the only reason I bought Champion instead of Honda, not price.
