  • When Disney MGM studios opened in May of 1989 guests immediately begged for more. Imagineers immediately got to work on a Roger Rabbit land where you could ride in a Roller Coaster, Transit Bus or even a Baby Buggy.

A Roger Rabbit land would have a much longer life than what we got, hence Hollywood Studios has no idea what it wants to be right now lol

It wasn't just a movie ride, it was a great movie ride. Loved that and the Backlot Tour. It was cool seeing Walt's plane. While the land wasn't built, at least he has a ride in Toontown at Disneyland

When you said "Who is Roger Rabbit?" it sounds like it could be a great sequel.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was to my sister and I what Frozen is to today's kids. We had that movie on VHS and watched it countless time. It breaks my heart to know Disney had plans to make Roger a big part of the park and that it never happened. I still think Roger has so much unexploited potential. He was such a funny and lovable character and the shorts that were made after the movie proves that he could have remained relevant way past the original movie. I don't think I'll ever stop hoping for him to make a comeback.

I used to work at the Great Movie Ride. These additions would have been amazing. Sure, we got some great things, but imagine if we got these, too. The Muppet Great Movie Ride? Sounds more fun than what we got, sadly.

Very interesting how they had to negotiate with Steven Spielberg over Roger rabbit. I think the ride in Disneyland is amazing but I’m happy we got a Tower instead of a studio. Though I’d love to see what hotel mel would’ve looked like.

Disneyland's Matterhorn was based on the forgettable Disney film "Third Man on the Mountain." Meanwhile, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, the Haunted Mansion, Space Mountain, It's a Small World, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Soarin' Over California, etc are all attractions that are NOT based on intellectual properties. What guests want is immersive attractions. Connection with a film franchise is immaterial.

"Who is Roger Rabbit?" - ouch. I guess that's true though, he's a lot less present in the Disney universe than he once was.

The former Disney MGM Studios was a working facility for motion-picture and television production, and the plant had much more legitimacy than whatever Universal did.

It's a shame that the company doesn't seem interested in bringing any of these plans back up. The fans would totally eat all this stuff up today. Muppets, Roger Rabbit... go on any fan boards or pages and you'll see a large group of people who want these really beloved, cult characters to get a spotlight. Why own the rights to something you don't use? Obviously Roger Rabbit has his own troubles between Amblin and others, but come on. There HAS to be a way to get Spielberg to sell Roger. Or at the very least get him to do something with the character. As for the Muppets, we still all want to see that. Can you imagine seeing a dark ride with Muppet animatronics?! Of course you can because that's like the ultimate thing you can think of. With all the zaniness that we see in a lot of newer attractions today, having a Muppets attraction that the Imagineers can totally ham up would blow the guests away. Dick Tracy probably wouldn't be around anymore because for all the advertising, he wasn't really that greatly remembered. Man though, those other franchises would still be a big hit.

Hot take - all of these ride ideas sound really, really cool, but I think it's for the best it didn't happen. Look, no one loves Who Framed Roger Rabbit more than I do, but it seems like they were banking on the early popularity of Who Framed Roger Rabbit too quickly before Disney could have a better perspective of its legacy. That's a dangerous thing to do, because then you spend millions of dollars you spent on rides based on a movie that doesn't have long-term popularity. It's logic like that that gets us a Shrek 3D movie at Universal that was awesome in 2004 but has absolutely no reason to still be there in 2020.
That said, if we could get an east coast clone of Car Toon Spin, th-that'd be great. Pls.

The reason Who Framed Roger Rabbit didn't have long-term popularity was because Disney pretty much stopped promoting the character once the relationship between Michael Eisner and Steven Spielberg fell through. Had Esiner and Spielberg gotten along, we would have had a Roger Rabbit sequel and several more Roger Rabbit shorts produced throughout the 90s. I'm sure the character would have also been more heavily promoted in Disney merchandise.

@rudy2fat You can find the movie it's based on on Archive.org. It's not a great movie (and it is racist), but it is worth a watch if you are interested in Disney history and animation history. Frankly, I don't mind the Princess and the Frog Splash Mountain retheme, but you do bring up a good point that a ride could still be popular even if the movie it's based on is rather obscure.

Universal Studios in California has always been considered a moderately-cheesy tourist trap and a half-day attraction. Locals only visit when they are hosting guests from outside the state or outside the country.
For some strange reason, British people, in particular, seem obsessed with the idea of going to Universal Studios.

The fact of the matter is that studio parks are no longer the interesting attractions that they once were. The studio parks at Walt Disney World and at Disneyland Paris are quickly turning into “we own this cool IP” parks. I personally think that this is fine, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a name change for both parks soon

Are there kids today who even care about Roger Rabbit, much less know the movie? Toontown is so dated now. The Mickey ride might help, but they need to update the whole area in DL. Muppets or RR in Hollywood Studios by this point would likely be on its way out.

Hollywood Studios was ahead of its time, then was behind the times, and has had an identity crisis ever since. Just make it a teen/young adult focused to complete with Universal Studios.

Hollywood Studios has had a 30+ year long identity crisis at this stage and whilst all the new additions are of a high quality they don't do a lot to make the park not just a dumping grounds for rides and IPs that don't fit anywhere else. - Luke

They really should have brought back the Animation Courtyard and replaced Star Wars Launch Bay with Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway. Then we could have had Railway as well as an updated version of Great Movie Ride, keeping the heart of the park and getting a great new trackless dark ride. - Luke
