Human beings can do good things that God notices, but they do not offset the bad things that we do. Also, even when we do good things, we may do them for bad reasons or motives, making even the good things corrupted. That is the reason God instituted the shedding of innocent blood for the forgiveness of sins. All animal sacrifices from Adam to Abel to Noah to Abraham to Moses (Leviticus) to the other prophets, all the way until Jesus, are pictures of/point to the coming suffering Messiah (see Isaiah 53 - written 700 years before Christ), the God-man figure mentioned in Daniel 7:13- (written 160 years before Christ). Those animals all represented the shedding of innocent blood (since animals do not sin) for the forgiveness of sins. One thing that strengthened my Christian faith as I read the Quran was that there was no mention of the shedding of innocent blood for sins, which is a major theme in both the Old and New Testament. This inconsistency is odd, since why would Allah command this for thousands of years and not mention the concept at all in this new religion. Islam gives too much weight to any good thing a person does, saying that it offsets the bad things. But the Jewish and Christian religions have a God that is perfectly holy and will not tolerate any sin. So, the only way for that God to be perfectly holy is for all sins to be paid for. They will either be paid for by you through your punishment in Hell, or by the Eternal Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was sent by God as a way to be merciful to many who humbly accept that their good deeds are not good enough.
