  • Current food systems have to feed over 8 billion people, and 50% of food calories are provided by small-scale #farming systems. #Biogas plants on these farms or at the local level have benefits for these small farms and the environment, such as reducing #greenhousegases, processing waste and ideally producing their own organic #fertiliser, which in turn reduces costs. However, in order to obtain organic fertiliser, the biogas plant residue (also called digestate) needs to be treated and small-scale farmers often cannot afford equipment to treat the digestate.
The NOMAD truck, which consists of two trailers, aims to solve this problem. Trailer one separates the solid and liquid fractions in the digestate, while trailer two focuses on recovering nutrients and removing antibiotics. The trailers have been tested in several countries, including Greece, Italy and Malta, with the aim of producing organic fertiliser while reducing costs and environmental impact.
The produced digestate has then been tested in greenhouse growing trials to evaluate effectiveness and put it to the test.
