  • Mexican Dads try Jamaican food! 🇯🇲
Our papas were in for a treat when we asked them to try some delicious dishes from the beautiful island of Jamaica! 🌴
Among those tasty treats were Jamaican chicken curry patties which are a savory chicken pastry. Jamaica's national dish, ackee and saltfish, was a delicious one that surprised our dads. Spicy jerk chicken was served with fried plantains and festival bread. The dads had some comforting oxtail with rice and peas, as well as curried goat with boiled dumplings. To end the meal, we served the papas some sorrel and Jamaican black cake!

Especially their aboriginals (Natives). These guys remind me of that. Our dishes, especially the ackee, originated in Africa. Africans traded with the Natives thousands of years before Spain came. Most of our dishes and Mexican dishes are deeply entangled in a culture long before 1400 Spain. Spain gave nothing 😭😂

They just have to go to the south of their countries and they have Caribbean influence. Look up san Andres - Colombia and Nicaragua it’s called blue something. They are Caribbean descendants who are discriminated by the European Spanish who came over. Interesting history.

WHO told this man that there's CHOCOLATE in the black cake?????!!!!
OHhhhh my goodness who lied to him!! There's NO CHOCOLATE!!!!
It's mixed fruit, raisins, and an unhealthy amount of rum (if done right LOL)!
There's NEVER ANY CHOCOLATE IN BLACK CAKE! I need to know what they were told before they were given the cake LOL
Also, What did you guys tell them before giving them the ackee dish? Why were they looking for fruit??? LOL I think they were thinking the dish was going to be sweet after hearing that ackee is a fruit!

As a Jamaican I was dying laughing hearing some of the ingredients they thought were in those dishes. I hope you told them sorrel is what we usually drink around Christmas or New Years. The black cake is made with Sorrel and not raisins. The sorrel is soaked in rum for months before the juice is pressed out to make the cake. If someone makes your black cake with raisins run! They are making a cheaper version that will have way leas flavor!

Here in Jamaica, we prefer fried dumplings or roasted breadfruit with the ackee. Boiled green bananas go well ackee and saltfish.
The fried ripe plantains go with the rice and peas. Green plantains (tostones) go with jerk chicken.
That gentleman was right when he said tortilla would go well with the curried goat. We use 'roti' here in Jamaica. It is basically the same as tortilla- light and thin. The goat should've be presented with white rice.

Adding sour cream to the patty made me laugh because I lived in LA for years and learned to make chile con carne with real chiles. My Jamaican niece enjoys it but last time she made her own spinners (dumplings) to put in it. 😂 Oh, and sorrel was mispronounced-the stress is on the first syllable. Sorrel is sold in Mexico and it’s called . . . jamaica ( ha-my-ka), but prepared much much weaker/diluted.

I'm Filipino American and married to a Jamaican. I'm also a big foodie that loves to cook and I noticed that Jamaican food (and the rest of West Indian cuisine to an extent) has many elements that are similar to Spanish Caribbean cuisine! The heavy use of thyme, scotch bonnet/habanero, and allspice sticks out as well as rice and peas/beans and rice 😋
