No idea how I missed this one, but what an amazing explore, pure "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" as you walked into that big bay windowed room for the first time, fantastic work guys, well shot, respectful.

This is St Cadocs mental hospital near Cwmbran. I was diagnosed there in a small room on the bottom floor. Dam scary place and super Victorian inside. An amazing building. I joked to my psychiatrist, hoping I wouldn't become an inpatient! She just glanced up through her glasses and carried on.

My late brother attended Parkside psychiatric hospital, as an out patient in Macclesfield, Cheshire, built late19th century.
The site was almost self sufficient, having its own trades people, a farm with milking cows, piggery and fruit trees.
Vital was the laundry with thousands of sheets and uniforms being washed, dried and ironed every week.
For entertaining the residents and staff, was a large ballroom, cricket ground, bowling green, and a swimming pool.
It closed in 1997 which coincidentally was the year I sadly lost my brother, but has been sympathetically redeveloped for residential accommodation. Most of the Victorian buildings have been restored and have complimentary additions, with original paths, grassy areas and mature trees preserving the open layout. Also, the working clock tower and twin cooling towers remain in which were housed water tanks for the boiler.
The cricket and bowling areas have been retained, and I often play crown green bowls there.

I am so sorry for your loss. That must be awful.
Your account of the Parkside psychiatric hospital is actually quite interesting. It sounds very healthy and reassuring. Gardenning and wildlife can be very comforting and reassuring when you arfe working outside or even just sitting in the open air. The ballroom and cricket ground and other pastimes sound very proactive and healthy. I'm actually quite saddened to hear that it closed. That's the kind of help that must at least de-stigmatise psychiatric care. It sounds as though it would have been very positive. Thank you for sharing.

Well Done Guys A Great Production. A grim reminder from a former era with an equally negative view from the administrators. However you guys have managed to transcend all of that into an appreciation of the building and architecture. Thank you Guys I always look forward to your latest releases.

Beautiful interwoven interview with the edit. It provides the context needed to understand the significance of exploring the asylum. Just another sign of the care put into making of these videos. Thanks again.

Evening lads and thanks for a very interesting video and video format with the clips from an old documentary reel. I feel they worked very well despite their grainy appearance and sound quality. Its a little concerning that the building is still in use and that you were able to make entry undetected, (bearing in mind its a working hospital) and although I understand and respect that your intentions and your respect for the facility was, and always is, of the upmost high standards, its frightening that the general public and those with the wrong intentions could equally gain access. The old operating tables were outstanding and were a highlight for me. Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed this one Fraser with the different style. It is a little concerning, we thought the same thing, however, it wasn't as simple as we made out to find an entrance into the vacant upper floors.

My parents worked in an old victorian asylum until it closed in 1987 and it was converted to high priced flats. I remember going inside many times as a child, it was a typical echoey spooky type of building and I was fascinated and scared of it at the same time, it was a huge place and no doubt the scene of much unfortunate suffering over the years. I remember the long corridors and even a tunnel beneath the hospital for access, these were cream and green painted brick. For some reason a lot of these places both here and in the US were designed with grand architecture that made some of them look like gothic fantasy. Well done to all urbexers for documenting these places and creating a valuable historical resource.

In 2000the NHS put a project called " closer to home " returning people back in the community with support living,
People had been in mental health hospital for years 30-40 years some people had disabilities and was in them as there parents could not cope.

Hi guys! Great explore! Even though the abuse that went on in places like this was absolutely horrendous, to say the least, they were really nice buildings architecturally speaking so it’s a shame, but also completely understandable, why they aren’t restored and repurposed. Attitudes towards mental health still needs improved upon til this day, but it’s obviously a lot, lot better than what used to occur! Thanks for the video!

There is a lot of talk about how terrible the asylums were, and I don't wish to say otherwise, but is the "care in the community" we have now really better for people with severe issues. I think they probably just end up in the community and without much care. I don't know if, concerning mental health care, the Britain of today is vastly better than the Britain displayed in the interview in this video (1960s).

People were used as experiments and a lot of those people including children were treated like shit. Then they became vulnerable and many died or mentally disturbed. My mother back in the early 50s was in care and her parents weren't aware of what really went on ? Until they found bruising on her arms and legs. That they pulled her out and never returned. My mother only ever spoke once to me of what she went through. She described it as pure hell.

In the West Riding during the 1980s my job took me to most of these old Psychiatric anf long stay Geriatric Hospitals. I like you have been able to walk abandoned corridors and in one Hospital, patient records were strewn around the floors and in unlocked sheds in the grounds. Most are now housing estates

Great to see this, still looks good and could be made functional again for something. I bet none of the staff from the buildings in use other than maintenance staff venture over there, those walls could tell stories. Allen and Eschmann operating tables are still used in theatres, if I am honest the Eshmann tables are not that different today.

They were awful in so many ways. A family member was a director of a few of these & said they just medicated patients to control/manage them rather than work to heal them. The side effects of the drugs were awful and you could be sectioned for stupid things like getting pregnant, having a break down etc
