Even before my grandfather passed before her, she had decided that she wanted to be buried in that going away outfit to "go away" one last time and actually stayed the same size (more or less) all those years and by the time she passed away she was able to be buried in her going away outfit like she wanted. ❤

In my country, it was common for brides to change from the white wedding dress to a blue dress at some point during the reception, even if she wasn't going on the honeymoon immediately. But I think the practice has died out.

Traditionally brides had 3 dresses made - the Wedding dress, another dress, often blue, worn during the wedding reception, and another to wear two weeks later, when it was traditional to return to the church you had been married at for the Sunday service. Dressmakers made the dresses, this was before there were big department stores full of ready made clothing. But a lot of this has died out, I think. But of course, customs varied ftom island to island. I can only speak for my island.

I just thought it was interesting that victorian going-away suit was blue, and connected it with our custom of a second, usually blue dress. It not unlikely that the idea of "blue dresses to go away" in was borrowed from Britain and became "blue dresses for the wedding reception" in Barbados. The influence of the British shows up in odd ways.

I had a going away outfit for my wedding. It was a comfortable white sweater dress. Kept me warm while it snowed during our send-off and was much easier to travel in and take off when we got to our hotel. Left the wedding dress with my mom, who sent it for cleaning.

We still have two dresses for a bride on her wedding dress in my country even now. First is a classical wedding dress that she wears until evening and then we have a ceremony purpose of which is to signify that she has now turned from a maiden into a wife and after that ceremony wife goes and changes into a different and usually more comfortable dress. Our weddings often stretch into next day (depends what venue people choose, with staying the night option or not) so she would be wearing the second dress at the evening of the first day and morning of the second day and then in afternoon everyone leaves, including the bride in her second dress.

I grew up knowing that one dress in my mother's closet, with a dainty gold belt, was her "going-away outfit" from her wedding. So when I got married, I also picked out a "going-away outfit" to wear as I left my reception. It has only just occurred to me that this isn't something that's still a modern tradition, and that I might not have done it had I not asked to wear that dainty gold belt a million times when I was a little girl.

My great grandma's dress is in the museum in Merced, CA. It was chocolate satin. I got to try on a replica when I was 11 and that made me sure I didn't want a white dress when I got married. It was a very yellow ivory with gold embroidery of flowers and ivy climbing up the skirt ❤️

*pro tip* dont head out to your honeymoon for at least a week for a cpuple of reasons: 1) the likelihood of spending your honeymoon sixk from the interactions with so many people that have all been traveling, is very high. 2) you might want to spend some time with guests from out of state, a day after brunch is always fun. Either way be aware of booking things in your new name if you haven't got time to change your name between the wedding and the honeymoon.
Having a going away dress is still practiced in the Southeast of US. You change at the end of the reception and then have the rice/seed throwing gauntlet on your way to the get away car with the groom. The car of course has cans dragging from the bumper and messages written in white shoe polish on the windshields. It is less common now than when I was married in the 1980s but you still see the cars decorated like this especially in June.
We still do kinda have that. A wedding gown and a reception dress. But I know a lot of ladies want to wear the dress as long as possible cause you only wear it once. And you get seen in it so you stay the focus of the day.

It is less common now than when I was married in the 1980s but you still see the cars decorated like this especially in June.
We still do kinda have that. A wedding gown and a reception dress. But I know a lot of ladies want to wear the dress as long as possible cause you only wear it once. And you get seen in it so you stay the focus of the day.
