Victorian vs Edwardian | which is which?

- Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
I've been meaning to do this for a little while. We had to do some decade based research for one of my modules at university and I thought it was cool to use to it for a video! Often on the internet, it seems Victorian and Edwardian are used almost interchangeably, but they are two different periods with different fashions. It was a lot of fun to find all of these images so I hope you enjoy the video!
I was thinking about doing one with questions regarding these periods - I asked on my Instagram if anyone had any questions and some of those I think could be a video by themselves. I've also collected all of the images I could accurately reference!

"consult a native English Speaker" Your English is perfect and spoken beautifully.
I’ll often say “late Victorian and Edwardian”, because that’s where my personal style lies. From 1890-1910. But I do try to differentiate between the two.
I do the same thing for the same reason.
That's my preferred era.
It’s nice seeing someone do a breakdown of the differences
"health *aggressive quotation marks INTENSIFIES* corset" LOLL
And YES please make a video on the aesthetic/artistic dress movement!
Agreed, I would also love to see a video on the aesthetic/artistic dress movement.
I'm glad you found so many photos of dark-skinned women. I've rarely seen any at all.
Thank you for including pictures of black women. Im black and i love period pieces. I understand the history of those times but naturally i cant help but to imagine what i wouldve worn. So thanks for educating me and inspiring me.
Hell yes to all of the dress history videos, they make my nerdy heart very happy.
Also 10/10 for your English, I wouldn't have realised you weren't a native English speaker were it not for this video!
"The Age of Innocence" with Winona Ryder, Michelle Pfieffer, and Daniel Day-Lewis, and "Tess of the d'Urbervilles" with Gemma Arterton and Eddie Redmayne, are set in the 1880s and the costuming is superb.
1890's--Murdoch Mysteries! Thank you for a more comprehensive guide of these decades.
This was genuinely one of the most helpful historical costuming videos I've ever watched. Thank you for laying out the decades so clearly! Sometimes I feel really dumb for not immediately knowing things, and this was clear and lovely and just... awesome!
Loved this! I always get the impression Edwardian often gets conflated with Victorian...
Personally I prefer Edwardian - spiced up with some details from the late Victorian age (I loved the costumes from Crimson Peak, though - not 100% historically accurate, I know).
ohh, reform dress would be so interesting!!
This is a great breakdown, the Victorian era covers so much change I know I get confused when jumping from one post/video to another that both claim to be Victorian but show dramatically different silhouettes
1850's film - Legend of Zorro.
A good edwardian example is the show self made - madam cj walker on netflix. I love looking at their clothes and houses
I really appreciate how you covered the differences between the decades of the Victorian period and many of the other non-date terms like natural form era. Having them laid out in context and compared to each other made it much easier to see how one flowed into the next!
Yes! More videos deep diving into the more obscure types of dresses would be very welcome.
6:58 _Somehow_ getting the feeling you really enjoy this period jgdjgjdgd
I love the white button down with a colored blouse aesthetic that costumers do for educational videos. You look gorgeous in yellow Kat!
Wait am I first?
hi! i think The Piano was set in the 1850s! there's a pretty scene where holly hunter and anna paquin camp inside a crinoline.
I found this article www2.bfi.org.uk/news-opinion/news-bfi/interviews/piano-jane-campion-jan-chapman which says it was 1850s, good shout!
I would love a video about the aesthetic dresses. I just got a pattern, and some of them didn't have waistlines, which I love!
The Aeronauts
(2019) is set in the 1860s I believe and the costuming is quite nice :D
Any video about the 1890s will always be appreciated!
Ooohh please make a video on the 1890’s fashion i love that era too 😍
Thank you for posting this. I was just looking up stuff trying to figure this out when your video notification popped up.
YESSS! Call out all the people for generalizing a huge period of time and saying that it's all the same!
The aggressive finger quotes are great! My favourite picture/ painting was #15 so stunning!
Love the decade-by-decade breakdown!
The Happy Stimming is so great to see 🥰
Great video, thank you !
I loved this thank you for explaining it all so well plus those pictures are gorgeous xx
Aesthetically I like 1890s and 1900s styles more then previous decades but if I were to take up history bounding I'd have to shorten skirts and lower necklines because I hate wearing tights clothes round my neck.
I was looking for the waistcoat pattern Costuming drama used on Black Snail Patterns website and got a bit confused that they only have an Edwardian section, which includes a lot of Victorian era patterns, rather than calling it Victorian, a more commonly known period.
And I agree, a video focussing on the aesthetic/artistic dress movement would be great!
Great video!! Love the healthy corset with quotes gesture!!
Dr. Thorne on Prime Video is set mid 1850s and is a really great mini series.
Thanks so much for that description. Cleared up alot!!!
Thank you for the informative video. I would love to see a video covering the 1890s in more detail. This is by far my favorite decade.
Yes tell me more about these fashion moments.
I MUST KNOW!
EDIT: So in my browsing of the internet Ive found that a majority of what people think of as Victorian is actually Edwardian. Victorian - like boho, hippie, g*psy, retro and vintage - I think, is a buzzword now. Its not so much about actually defining and identifying things that span the actual Victorian period, but its about appearing as such. Much of what I used to think of as Victorian is actually Edwardian because of inaccurate labeling.
Absolutely delightful, thank you!!
That was a wonderful overview of the two eras. Thanks so much for your insight. Take care.
I love how you leave what others would cut, way more fun to watch :)
Also I keep waiting for someone to mention Murdoch Mysteries, but it's Canadian so nobody's ever heard of it... My uneducated eye says the costuming is often beautiful even if they bash corsets now and then (which, you know, I bash bras all the time, so....) although I'm pretty sure that I once spotted where someone was hiding a zipper...
That's such a helpful video :) thank you so much!
Dead Still is set in the 1880s, though I don't know how accurate it is. I like how Nancy's dress reuses the same parts with her accessories changing (at least at the beginning) instead of having her have a different outfit every episode. Ripper Street is set in 1889 at the beginning, but again, I don't know how accurate it is.
I enjoyed this video greatly and would definitely be interested in a video about the different dress movements
i would love a video on the fringe dress movements! i have been having SUCH a hard time finding information on each of them beyond brief overviews of a single outfit for each online (beyond aesthetic dress paintings and some extant garments for artistic dress from american duchess) and not much for patterns :c
google keeps getting them muddled in with modern fashion brand names ect
Love this information
Thank you so much
Amo la era antigua, sobretodo esta gracias beatiffull!
Thanks! I have that book, it is still in it's wrapper. I'll have to give it a look!
I really enjoyed this video.
It would be cool if you could talk about the costumes in the Netflix film Jingle Jangle.
I think my favourite outline is that of the late 1890s. It’s just so beautiful!
“Hello Obi-Wan!”
“Hello there General Grievous”
Please DO make a video on the aesthetic dress!
My friend and I were just talking about how many people confuse them today!!
Many Americans use the term "Victorian" as a catch all for clothing over 100 years old, but often they really are referring to Edwardian
1850’s movie “Sissi” with Romy Schneider
*aggressive quotation fingers*
Was the early part of the Anne Of Green Gables series set in the 1880’s??? I could be wrong, but I think when it begins, the women are dressed like that? Quite formidable but then softening quite quickly as the story progresses…perhaps the late 1880’s??? 🤷♀️😊
North & South (2004) was a TV show that took place in the 1850’s.
Very interesting info about the publication date of the book.
Can you do the same. Comparison with the Georgian period !? What would. Have been the Canadian/American equivalents?
.and yes interested in a second video for 1890s that makes you so excited 🌞
I always follow European time periods/era. Not sure if it because I am born Canadian.. my European ancestry or popular media.
So romantic era and Regency era was in essence apart of the later Georgian era ?
You did a fantastic job by the way !!! I wish I could dress like this every day...without being made fun of lol
I appreciate your resources listed in description ... Would you ever be able to lost some of the movies/tv shows you referred ?
Thank you for this info and African ladies in Edwardian dress
Ah, yes, the recurring problem of, I know this word, I can use this word, I can't speak this word cuz I have never heard this word. Love your work. This made me think of two other things, (not actually a bad thing) so I will have to watch it again after I get out of the wormhole and the rabbit hole. STAY WELL!
The 1890s, 1900s, and 1910s are most definitely my favorite decades of western fashion most of my dresses are inspired by those decades
Some versions of "Great Expectations" show Estella in tiered skirt dresses.
Here's some classic Australian movies set in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. I haven't seen them in a very long time so I can't promise that the scripts have aged well. Some of the costumes from these movies are great though.
1880s - The Man From Snowy River (1982) -> based on the 1890 poem
Seven Little Australians (1973) -> based on the 1894 novel
1890s - My Brilliant Career (1979) -> based on the 1901 novel
The Getting of Wisdom (1977) -> based on the 1910 novel
I’m pretty sure The Phantom of the Opera takes place in the 1880s. Or at least the play does anyways. Though I did read somewhere that they purposely put Christine in “outdated” clothing in some scenes
My favorite era was the bustle era. I also like that era in terms of architecture, too. This is a great overview of the decades. Thank you for checking on the pronunciation of "epitome." I hate when people butcher words; it is just grinding. I'd rather have someone do what you did, check the pronunciation and get back on.
Thank You!
Bram Stoker's Dracula film in 1992, is set in the late 1880's. If not, 1885 or 1886 to be exact! Before, other films have done more in the 1890's setting.
Of you wonder more into Opera Theatre to any Theatre, as you may know, La Traviatta is done in the late 1850's to 1860's frequently, and Madame Butterfly in the early 1990's because that's when Puccini compose it. These are a few examples. Tosca is quite awesome, because it's either done in the mid Recency era or the late 1870's. Going to play productions, The Matchmaker or a.k.a. Hello Dolly is actually set in the mid to late 1880's.
So, here are some histrionic style esthetics.
Brilliant video. Informative and entertaining. ❤️ Lynne
I think the BBC series North and South was set on the 1850s (I know the book was published around that time so I'm guessing). I love the costume on that show, but don't know how historically accurate it is! This inspired me to do some research!! =)
I love the 2004 BBC North & South!! In the show (and in the book) the characters visit the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London - a World Fair also known as "The Crystal Palace Exhibition". So the time period for the story is roughly 1849-1852, as there are a couple of flashbacks. The costumes from the show are really very historically appropriate for these years.
I love the costumes in this show! Especially Margaret's outfits. But I am very partial to Fanny's chequered dress (with its many petticoats).
I'd really, really like a video on the dress reform
Yes, please do a video on Reform Dress, please.
crimson peak took place in New York, 1887
Did not know at all that English was not your first language. Had to pause the video to search the comments, hoping to find out what your first language is, because I'm still convinced that English is your first language.
I'm not sure how accurate the costumes are, but "North and South" is about the lead up to the civil war.
Did you do an 1890’s focused video? And another for the early and 1900?
I am very interested in the aesthetic/artistic dress video!
I ran into this video because I honestly cannot tell the difference between Victorian and Edwardian fashion. I am a big Titanic nerd and I know the ladies of the time wore Edwardian outfits. I am considering getting an Edwardian outfit but honestly there's a dearth of period clothing online that is affordable 😅😅 It's not that important in the grand scheme of things considering that I'd rather be comfortable for work and play, but I was just curious. thanks for this informative video :D
I need to settle on one or the other and get good at the style.
As I commented on Instagram, I prefer Edwardian, but like pretty much anything from 1870s onwards. I love your accent - what region(s) shaped your accent?
Really enjoyed this information. I was wondering, since I recently purchased the "Victorian " techniques book, what you thought of it. Have you found it useful?
Yep, I quite like it, it's a good reference book!
Ahhh! Photo 15 is of Sisi! I knew I recognized her!
Thank you so much. I had such a hard time figuring out when Anne of Green gables was set. Abc now I know it’s 1890s to 1910-ish.
I always find it confusing in the adaptations because they seem to push the action forward for some reason... Can't remember if any dates were mentioned in the books until the last one. Anne's youngest child was 15 in 1914 when all her 5 brothers and sisters were older and able o join the war efforts. And I think Anne was 24 when she and Gilbert got married. We can deduce Anne was around 50 yrs old during WW1, by that reasoning the first book takes place in the late 70s, early 80s.
Yes they put the movies and shows forward in time.because they like the look and era better. I think characters like Anne shirely and Jo march can work in any era though.
.......ESPETACULAR.....MAGNÍFICA......INCRÍVEL........
Could you tell me where you got the image #38 from? It doesn’t appear in your list. TYI
Oh I see DevereYarns advent calendar :) nice, I have mine ❤️
1850’s series might be North and South with Richard Armitage.
Technically Colette wasn’t just the 1890s it is ranged from the 1890s to 1900s because it is about the author of the brilliant Claudine books
You can also set sweeney tod demon barber of fleet street in the late 1860's
1880s Portrait of a Lady perhaps? Seems you need more Henry James and Edith Wharton watching and a full course of Merchant-Ivory films.
I like using non English style descriptors where possible. The ' Victorian Era' cover the Gilded Age, Civil War Era etc in the US and Ls Belle Epoque in France.
the video we all needed🤍
I’m fascinated by the 1890’s, and up through 1905 or 06.
Can you do a part 2 with men?
I think the tv show miss scarlet and the duke is set in the 1880’s
I found another tv show in acorn tv called Dead Still. It is set in 1880’s Ireland.
So bridgerton is what era please??
The flick, From Hell takes place in the 1880s. Im not sure about Martin Scorcese's Age of Innocence,....maybe the 1880s as well.
ps: you're FUNNY !!!!
Your English accent seem's like a British/Irish/Scottish mix however it is very elegant
I really want to dress like these styles in every day life. I think the women's attire was so awesome and would love if I had a girlfriend that would wear such things as steel cages and very large dresses. Such a cool period in time in terms of fashion.
What about Georgian?
From Hell, featuring Johhny Depp take place in 1888.
