  • This is an installation video for the official Tesla Model Y HEPA filter retrofit.
This Retrofit can be purchased In the Tesla app under Service My Vehicle, Retrofit.
You have 2 options for ordering the retrofit.
    1. Tesla can do the entire Retrofit, which is over $350 at the time of recording in my area of Minnesota. (this is what I was quoted, parts and labor and software update bio mode)
    2. You can ask for the parts and install them yourselves, which totaled $173.00 at the time of this recording. I also had to go to a service center to pick up all the parts and...
If you install the Retrofit yourself, you will need a second appointment to have Tesla come to your house or go into a service center to have them install the Bio Mode software in your car.
Long story on this. It will cost you $70 to have them "Inspect" your work to make sure you installed everything correctly before they install the "free" Bio mode. Seems like a scam to me. The tech who arrived at my house tried to charge me $300 in addition to the $173 I paid for the hardware and installed myself by saying he would need to fully redo the entire car so Tesla would sign off on it. A call to his manager and an FU has led me to not having the proper bio software installed on my 2020 Tesla Model Y. I will make another video when I bring it to another service center later this week to have them install the bio mode and update it in this description section below.

If anyone is wondering what the blank plastic on top is all about, it's to better protect the intake from water running down off the windshield. The old intake filter allowed water and debris to get into the filter resulting in that musty smell through the cabin. There is no weather strip seal under the hood.

Damn! I wish I had seen this video before I had the service center install it. I didn't know it was an option to do it myself. They were done in less than 30 minutes. Yes, don't forget to have the biohazard mode software installed afterwards! They may charger you for it.
I'm hoping for an official parcel shelf retrofit instead of the unofficial one some people were lucky enough to get.

for the hole that you drill, would it be better if you put so alcohol clean it first and put some touch up paint, let dry then install the rivet. over time you might see rust and that is so close the the wheel where water will be splashing in the area.

So there is actually another full part of the casting under that hole. If you were to look down into it you can see a fully painted second part of the casting. Below that second part of the metal is the wheel well.
I did think about maybe using an acid etch primer paint just to make the top of the rivet look better but at the end of the day, I wouldn't expect any water to get to this part of the car.

New Tesla owner (2021 Model Y), so I have 2 dumb questions.
    1. Would you say the Hepa filter is a must-have?
    2. Does this replace the need for the 2 airfilters inside the vehicle?

HEPA is a waste of money unless you live in the CA fires. You still need 2 cabin air filters. I’ve never used bio mode ever. Probably should have saved my money and not drilled into my car. It does not increase value of the car.

Do you remove the existing cabin filters? Is it easy to replace the new HEPPA filters?

      No

You don’t need to remove the interior cabin filters. If you wish to change them, that is done on the front passenger side. Super simple you just pull off the side panel and pop them out.
