Heard this song driving my kids home after a Luau around midnight in a rainstorm, driving through Kauai, HI. Its been their most requested song since then
Also this is a sick appropriation. I read multiple articles that didnt even mention the backing tracks origin. The skatalites' dick tracy. It def doesnt deserve to be a hit if they dont credit their uses, theyre stealing this in attempt to captilize on it and profit. Also theyre singing in fake jamaican accents which isnt cool and the black caricatures in this video are disgustingly disrepsectful. I suggest you dislike this video promptly
This sounds like a hit song. It's curious that Todd''s long list of masterpieces aren't and underrated but the silly-sounding "Bang on the Drum" songs like this are.
It does use a riff from the Skatalites "Dick Tracy", but is not entirely a rip-off. Igor Stravinsky said "Great composers never borrow from other composers..... They steal." That being said I'm looking forward to a new Todd album.
@@sam808tt2 LOL. Ya know...it occurred to me at the outset this was some commentary on Trump. Todd just can’t leave that alone! BTW, Todd had offered “Just One Victory” free to the Dems for the campaign. I haven’t seen it used yet. Have you? Anyone else?
@@Lucypetuniaggm I know he tried to re record it but failed to get any collaborators in time. I haven’t heard it but I don’t really follow American politics closely so I’m not a great source on that one haha
Wow, what an interesting collaboration. Thanks, guys. Good stuff. Would LOVE to see TR return more the 70s-80s styles that he was so perfect for! "nearly human" and "2nd Wind" were his last great records...here's hoping this one is even better!
I like it. I like the graphics. Simple and still very interesting. graphics. It's just a catchy little tune, and certainly not the first of its kind from OH. Just listened to the Skatakites. I wouldn't call it a copy, but I'm not a musician. I would say it's similar, but not a copy. We all know that Todd does all kinds of stuff. No world Order, State & Global were very challenging for me, but I found a few tunes on each that I really do love. Been a fan since '73. I think he's a genius [sounds/melodies & lyrics]. However, I DO NOT like everything he has ever done. Some of it I love when it comes out, and then just doesn't stand up over time. But he has such a vast collection that I can always find something for my mood. Let him do his thing. He's going to anyway ..... Peace
Great stuff. Would’ve been a big hit in the good old days. For anyone griping about this giving offence to the Caribbean community, get a life. I refer you to Johnee Jingo or (at a push) Da Da Dali
One might also point out that the song specifically states that "we be 27 days out of Mogadishu" - that is the western coast of Somalia in the Indian Ocean ... which is halfway around the planet from the Caribbean (in the Atlantic Ocean). Not only should they get a life, but they should also get an education regarding reading maps!
They appear to be going down all right...and judging by the reaction, the female statue isn't made of stone. 'Here we come Davy Jones.' 'Look out below.' Are we being had?
I'm good with every song off new album except for flappie. I know it's a cover from a dutch comedian but i think he could have covered any other xmas song. Not into killing .
Hmm I’m pretty conflicted with this. I do overall like it, it’s nothing mind blowing but it’s...fine. However It’s obvious that a lot of this song is sampled from The Skatalites “Dick Tracy”. Like A LOT of it is, to the point that I don’t even know if I can say it’s sampling because it’s feels borderline illegal. I wouldn’t really call this an original song, it’s more like a remix of Dick Tracy. I don’t know if Rundgren has permission to use that song but I hope there is some credit to The Skatalites on the album or even their record company getting royalties because not doing so would be extremely disrespectful.
I just don't understand why Todd has ripped the music from The Skatalites “Dick Tracy”. Surely Todd could have come up with his own original thing (maybe even as a tribute). But no, a near 1 for 1 copy and no credit to be seen. I like the song and enjoy listening to it but I am disappointed in Todd's lack of creativity here (or lack or credit)
I just listened to the Skatalites tune. You’re right. It’s almost a note for note copy. I can’t imagine Todd not getting a release from SKA, or as you said at least crediting them...maybe sharing revenue?
@@Lucypetuniaggm I don’t know much about the skatalites but I heard they lost/sold the rights years ago so they have no say in what happens to their music and won’t make any money off it- hence why at this point it would be nice to give credit so they at least get recognition

I'm hardly worried about it. In Reggae the same riddim is recycled endlessly. It's what you do with it.
excellent video and love the song!

This song is pretty catchy, like a more poppy Gotye. I'm surprised a song from Rivers Cuomo doesn't have at least 100k views.
