Musicals (films) were more common in those days, and if you are old enough to remember the Donny & Marie show, they always ended their show by singing together. Same with Captain & Tennille. Music was just more intertwined into television shows, and this often extended into commercials - particularly aviation commercials which invoke wistful images for the viewer about where they might wish to plan their next getaway.
It was great marketing though. You won't remember some generic shampoo commercial, but if an ad has a jingle that sticks with you and you can sing along to, that brand is burned into your mind.
My favorite was the United Airline commercial with the guy who had an unsuccessful sales trip, then closed a deal with another passenger on the flight home.

Fantastic, thank you!
6:24 sounds like the song from carnivals 1985 commercial spot with Kathie lee glifford
It was. The song, if I'm not mistaken, was titled :" If my friends could see me now". I forgot who originally sang the song but it was used in many commercials. Here in 2024, they are still using recognizable songs in commercials and changing the lyrics to fit the message.
I really like the Iran air ad when I listen to it I smile and it reminds me of my friend
Im 12 and I WANNA BE 80 YEARS OLD BEACUSE OF THIS. I WANNA RIDE ON A MD11 OR B727
❤❤❤❤
"Catch us!" from PSA. Almost like they knew one was going to fall out of the sky. Also, no Eastern Airlines?
Too soon
It's me but the Hughes AirWest song is ultra catchy
I am looking for an advertisement called the commervial traveller set to the music of "free dedign" called "love you." United? Loved it so, cant find it anymore on youtube. Thanks!
My top 10 commercials from this video are continental American TWA,delta,Aerolineas Argentinas, Kenya airways,Philippine airlines, Qantas, swissair, Alitalia, Aeromexico and United
I swear every airline had a DC-10 back then
Thank you for sharing.
What is the name of the melody of KLM video? Minute 18:20. Thanks for you possible answer
What year is the KLM video from? Very nice background music
TWA was the best 🔥🔥
1:42 pretty sure those flight attendants are still working at American, just a lot more grizzled and angry these days.
Wouldn't you be? People have lost their damn minds!😳
It seemed to be mandatory to have a cheesy jingle when making an airline advertisement in the 70’s.😂
I don`t think it cheesy. It was just in tune with the times. But then if you did`nt travel in the industry`s heydays you`ll never understand the magic the industry had then.
You won't remember some generic shampoo commercial, but if an ad has a jingle that sticks with you and you can sing along to, that brand is burned into your mind.
was great when the no smoking sign went off and u could light up !!!!
35:31 Kenya Airways 💞💞, the Pride of Africa 🇰🇪
My land is Kenya ❣️
I was hoping to see the KLM commercial with Eye Level music. Probably the best from the 70s.
Anyone else a bit frightened by that British Air flight attendant’s eyes?
Why did they get rid of the MD-80 it looks sooo Good
Apparently it was loud, uncomfortable and nowadays just not efficient. It is a beautiful plane tho, that's a fact :)
Since I started listening to it, I have liked more and more commercials
My favorite was the United Airline commercial with the guy who had an unsuccessful sales trip, then closed a deal with another passenger on the flight home.
A little-noted victim of the demise of the skycap position was middle-aged African American actors with mustaches.
Back when even the worst US airlines provided a better flying experience than the best airlines do today.
Did anyone else realize the music in the Aer Lingus commercial is from "The Mission"?
This is when airlines had to compete, now..... its all two under the wing / 737's and 3 airlines...with all the same price..... classic aviation times were the best ...when you went to an airport. Loud, Smokey, and all models of aircraft......beautiful!
This was when carriers cared about the paying customer. Now if you look at anyone sideways your at risk of being carried off and jailed.
IKR
You're on a no-fly list, aren't you?😉
@@ryankenyon5010 is that an American thing?
@@Robochop-vz3qm There have been an uptick in disruptions and assaults on passenger flights lately. People who can't be bothered with a mask and often have to be physically restrained. They are then put on a list the FAA and airlines keep that prohibits a violator from flying on U.S. carriers.
@@ryankenyon5010 ok
Wow. Philippine Airlines has had quite a heft of campaigns in the 70s and 80s
Back when flying was fun!
The Korean Air 1980s commercial shows a B747-400 which used to operate the New York morning flight KE081/082
Aeroperu part 8:55 is literally broke my heart, the music was so good and sadly this airline closed after a plane crash 😢😢
United airlines was my most #1 favorite airline in the multiverse
my favorite is PSA commercial
Wow in Iberia they serve good food and they do it several times. Oh when you get to Barajas International Airport you don´t want to think of food for a while, lol.
Ah the 70s and 80s.
When every commercial had to have it's own song.
very cool thanks (we'll shake our tail for you!)
God the world has changed...
I was born in the 60's and you're right. I believe the moment that America began to really change for the worse was in 1993. That was when Hillary Clinton entered the White House for the first time. Not joking, that was the turning point in our society.
Don't forget Reagan also happened to the US in 1981. 🙄
@@TheUtuber999 Thank God he did!! We would be speaking Russian or Iranian in 1984 if he didn’t. Although we still are on our way to speaking Chinese real soon......thank you so much for mentioning one of the most popular Presidents in American history!! 😁
@@rapman5363 You have a great sense of humor... I needed that! 😆
@@MomsYTaccount You mean Bill?
Excellent
0:43 Shelby Flint sings for PSA Airlines. Perfectly captures the mid/late 70s California vibe.
SWA gets my vote- great pilots and the Flight Crew really entertains!!!!
Here’s My Opinion If These Airlines Should Change Their Livery To Their Old One:
American Airlines ✅
Delta Airlines ❌
United Airlines ✅
British Airways ❌
Lufthansa ✅
Air Canada ✅

That woman’s dance at 13:38 is priceless. God awful, but still priceless 🤣
I was born in 9/25/14 so i dint see them until now
Were a lot of the European airline commercials for cinema? Longer form. Production values outstanding.
Be great if you could locate commercials from the deregulation upstarts like New York Air, PeopleExpress, Presidential, Midwest Express etc. I have NYA as I worked for them but on 3/4 cart.
What is 3/4 cart??
@@mangos2888 3/4" tape cartridge, which was widely used in that day for client and file copies. Like a bigger version of a VHS or Betamax tape. 1" hi-band was a general broadcast standard. When these commercials were done, ad agencies were still shipping 16 millimeter film copies to stations and I'd believe that continued for another decade in places like Latin America! By the 1990s the US broadcast distribution started to be done electronically by satellite.
There are several on this forum.
The Korean air one reminds me of nostalgic karaoke that my family would sing in the phillipines, I miss those memories
Considering that planes were crashing left and right, they really did need commercials to convince people to fly in the 70’s

English translation:
Korean Air is introducing 747-400 Super Jumbos to fleet, leading the new era of air travel.
More comfortable, Much safer.
Korean Air is always trying to offer the best experience for your journey.
Wing of Korea, Korean Air.
"Hey Mahmoud, it's time for that meeting. What did the ad agency come up with?"
"Wait, was I supposed to set that up? Shi... ummm, hold on a minute..."
"Iran Air. We take you there. We take you back."
