One thing I REALLY WANTED was a line where the parents say “I wish Grammy gram accepted ME…”
The “bare minimum” is not usually what parents do. Parents ARGUE with their kids decisions all the time. The grandma could have had issues with the parents MARRIAGE from the start.

Manga Writer I have to say, my favorite part in all of this was the Re-write.
I just love the new ideas you made to fit into one consistent theme and tone and amazing thanks to your drawings and your incredible voice acting and music choice.
(I'm not exaggerating, your voice when screaming, crying or speaking in a higher tone as these characters are talking was impressive and made me feel fear, dread, anger, surprise and joy more than when I watched the actual show itself)
Also with the much needed context, dialogue and how you showed Barney is not an aggressor, actually was punished for leaving and the parents are more morally grayer in this Re-write, you made me to genuinely start liking and rooting Barney's struggle to be accepted but also understood the perspective from the parents. Incredibly i started hating on the mother instead of Barney during the climax scene and in the ending I felt like I got something more out if it with the conclusion of his arc and how he grew. If that had happened in the show Barney would have been probably my favorite character of the show.
Sadly it didn't but, this only shows how you know how to find flaws into the material and make it better with what you have. Very well done Manga you're an amazing reviewer

Fantastic Review! you managed to dive into this show's problems better than i or anyone else could. i love especially your rewrite of Barney. You made a seemingly bland and almost unlikable Character into a more deep, understandable and compelling victim. You made him feel like someone who actually suffered through hell instead of a selfish brat and his parents more believably stubborn, guilty, and redeemable. his story feels alot more meaningful and relatable not just to trans people, but ALL people, and the nightmare scenes especially being TRULY reminiscent of Infinity Train (the show Hamishe Steele was supposedly comparing to). i didnt think someone could fix barney and make me care about him, but you found a way! For that, you've earned a Sub.

Personally, I would've had it so that in the nightmare the parents nod a little and give (somewhat) subtle signs that they agree with what the grandma's saying. This would make it so that (at least in Barney's mind) his parents not only sat idly by, but they sided with his grandma.

I'm not a writer, but I think the reason we never see or hear what Barney's grandma said to him was to "not offend the audience". Like, they probably think a trans viewer would be upset by the grandma, and somehow not understand that it's meant to be a bad thing. Just because a villain says something, certainly does not mean the writer would say or believe that.
I'd guess the writers spend a lot of time on twitter, to the point they genuinely think everyone will overreact to everything and anything.
I'm not sure about that though, it might just be bad writing

I watched first three episodes _after_ watching this video, just to make sure I was giving the series a fair shake instead of taking your word for it -though don't worry; I didn't watch on Netflix,- and I agree with basically everything but the visuals, which I don't love (in fact, I really dislike the character designs), but I thought the animation itself was above average (maybe I'm just too used to low budget stuff), and kind of liked the chromatic aberration they seemed to be using for foregrounds/backgrounds. But as for everything else? Hard agree, especially comparing your storyboards to the actual product.
Giving examples in the coming out one _really_ helped; I especially liked the 'something on my face' line, because that felt pretty realistic, mentally; you're still 'you' to the people who knew you pre-transition, but 'off.' Norma suffering from her own problems in the same fear scenario as Barney was also a lot more impactful, even if it was more of a nice touch over something that _needed_ to be included. The rest I can't compare to the original source material since I didn't watch it, but the parent one was great too, showing two different 'points' of acceptance. _More drama. More development. More scenarios for viewers to potentially relate to. Making it hit harder when they turn around._
As you and many others have said, I _really_ wish I knew what the grandma said. She has no nuance to her. She just feels like some pure evil caricature, without us even knowing the details of _why_ she's evil and bad. I guess we know _one_ line, due to the "you're just like gramm gramm" (or whatever they call her) thing, which is better than nothing. Still, one dimensional characters are _so_ boring; the grandma is a character device for another character's trauma, not a person. Boo.
I'd _hope_ that, as a means to confront this trauma and overcome it, they'd eventually show how the scene played out in reality (no scary lighting/visuals, and _words)._ If they _really_ wanted to make it realistic, I'd hope the grandma's words _weren't_ just flat out slurs or demeaning "You will never be a man"s and were more like the few I could make out in your prompt (and I suppose also the one hinted at in the show, about wishing he was the how he was before). Show the _innocence_ of an ignorant person's statements (in their eyes) and how statements they think are fine can have such negative effects on a trans person. Delicious nuance. I think it actually hits harder if it's less of a "She's 100% bad" thing, because it shows how ignorance and lack of understanding can play a role in trauma, not just "GRRR. I'M A BIGOT. SLUR, SLUR, SLUR." (And I know the biggest thing for Barney was his family not defending him, not the grandma herself, but this comment is long enough already.)
Anyway, first video I ever watched from you. Liked and Subscribed; time to watch your _High Guardian Spice_ video.

I actually agree with most of this review except the comment about parents accepting you. No acceptance shouldn’t be praised at all nor should characters just be eternally grateful for it to a point where they can’t feel frustrated when a family member doesn’t stand up for them. Obviously an adult yelling at a teenager is a lot different than an adult yelling at another adult, so Barney’s cowardice is perfectly reasonable. The parents trying to dismiss the argument is still indefensible.

@@VigilanteLulu exactly, the problem is that we don't know what grandma said.
We also don't know how is it that his parents and school knowing is bad, the show didn't explore him enough to show or tell us how he was discriminated, or how his parents "are not accepting him" when they call him by his pronouns correctly, they show they care about him when the mom does Mac and cheese without the chess as he likes it and the dad shows that he had no problem with him being trans, he never acted blunt or disregarded him, do you remember that? Manga Writer already talked about it very much.
And truly the only bad thing they did was not defending when the grandma was belittling him, which can be explained with the parents being afraid to stand up to her authority.
And in the final episode we saw how easily they apologized themselves and decided to fight his battles by not letting grandma have dinner with them until she changes her ways.
Just as MW said it, the parents are saints when looked in comparison to Barney and how aggressive he was, if the story was done in any way similar to the Re-write, THEN we would all be on his side because we would have actually seen how Barney was genuinely being "tolerated" but still not accepted by his parents and that would justify Barney being so argumentative with them.

The problem wasn’t that the parents slipped up, the problem was that they refused to acknowledge they were really in the wrong directly and address it and that they were dismissive of how bad what happened to him really was by playing it off as “oh, you know how she is”. He didn’t necessarily think his parents were bad parents as much as people who made him unhappy. He’s saying his parents truly caring about him *was* the bare minimum.

I see both sides tbh, but Barney really was an immature little conkwocket in how he went about everything. He's also a hypocrite, cuz he wasn't there to support his little brother, yet tries to make excuses for hurting him. Same goes for his treatment of Pugsley.
We can't really say that the parents didn't stand up to grandma, because they never explain what she did. The parents have been very supportive and accepting of Barney in every other scene of the show, so I'm more inclined to believe he's just throwing a toddler tantrum and being way too hard on his parents. You can't make speculations on things the show deliberately refuses to show the audience. For all we know, grandma only accidentally deadnamed Barney and his parents didn't notice. (Yeah I know that's unlikely, but it's no different than assuming the worst case scenario cuz the show never shows us what actually happened).

They really threw away some good opportunities for psychological horror with the grandma scenes. They could’ve still kept things semi vague, but at least had Grandma say the “why can’t you just be like you used to be?” line to make that later scene have more impact. Even the few added storyboard scenes made the story much more compelling.

"Or try to grow some f-ing balls"
Oh man, the joke is right there...
In all seriousness, when you see the diner conversation alone, you can easily agree with Barney's speech
Maybe is because i am NB, which qualify me as trans, or maybe is because i had issues with my parents since i was a kid, but i do agree with the sentiment that is the bare minimum for a parent to accept you. If they are not causing people harm, it is the bare minimum to accept how your child chooses to live
But after watching more of it, and listening to your points, i do agree with you. It sounds like the creator put all his frustrations growing up LGBTQ+, and didnt tried to explore the character with more love. You do sense a lot of coping with Barney, like the creator or writer is using him to deal with his own issues. Not that is a bad thing, but it can cause caricatures of a group, which could be dangerous
Thankfully I dont think they messed up that badly to cause harm. HgS insinuated that transitioning and detransitioning is a easy process with no consequences, and to young trans people (heck, even for someone like me that recently came out) is a very dangerous message. Transioning isnt for everyone. It is not something you can reverse without any consequence. As rare as is it, detransitioning is hard man, it can be heart broken to watch.
We in the trans umbrella need to be 100% sure if the processing of transitioning will help. It doesnt make is less valid to not go all the away, and just passing is good enough

Somewhere around 1:04:00 is where we finally MIGHT disagree. It's entirely possible, yes, that the mom was trying to be respectful of the pronouns. But I think it was more like, she was talking to someone who would not have known Barney as anything but "Barney." It would have been confusing if she went around asking about a female park worker named Bernadette when she knew Barney was trying to hide the truth from co-workers.

Yeah too much tell vs show.
If it were me before revealing that Barney is trans (to people who didn't know from the comic) I would've started with the mother being on the phone with the grandmother (yeah refuse grammy-gram too) in the background and using the deadname a bit uncomfortably. "um yeah uh Natasha will be there."
Barney flinches so you get the feeling Natasha is someone Barney is uncomfortable being around. Then come into the kitchen, bring up the weakness topic for the interview so the "avoid confrontation" bit can hit harder in hindsight (oh and actually make him more prone to avoiding confrontation with his parents). Talk about the interview and the dinner then Barney leaves. And follow what you've said.
I mean look at the background of that scene there's a big family portrait you'd see once you come inside with Barney as Barney. If we're going to say it's just a shaky tolerance just have a small picture somewhere no one would really notice but otherwise no presence of Barney.
Doing it that way you can then see in hindsight how his parents acceptance of him is limited, how it's the little things that can build up into a big weight that people who aren't aware will see as nothing until someone points it out. How blind you're to it unless it's some blatant bigotry.

Barney’s struggles are shown better. As a closeted trans man living with transphobic parents, I relate to his struggles. Heavily. And the part with the everyone has troubles dealing with the relationship between your parents is something I relate to a LOT.

  • @VigilanteLulu

Eeeeehhhh, I'd say it's more a 7/10 show. I mean, there's quite a bit of clunkiness to the writing in places and similar shows like Amphibia, The Owl House, Hilda, Infinity Train and even lighter stuff like Craig of the Creek or The Ghost & Molly McGee are fundamentally stronger shows, but for what it's worth, I think it's quite an overhated show with a good handful of interesting moments and character arcs. Norma, in particular, being one of the most interesting and enjoyable characters who, being canonically autistic, based on Hamish Steele's own autistic experiences, has an extremely relatable scenario with her fear of socializing with people (Ep 3 being a particular highlight because of it).
Another fave character is Courtney (voiced by Hannah Montana's Emily Osment) for being an adorable scrunkly and also having an interesting arc about trying to get back to the Underworld. I also really like Badyah, a quirky Iranian-American nerd who didn't have much to chew on in S1 to be fair, but she does play more of a role in Season 2 with Norma plucking up the courage to confess her feeling to her, but she says she's straight (or so she thinks) but tries to make it up to her in the episode that follows. (The shipping gag of her pairing Norma and Zagan may be cringe, but that's kinda the point, amusingly satirizing the shippers online.) I also think Badyah's design is quite adorable (the round glasses reminding me of Lotte from LWA and Ridley from Glitch Techs and scarf-styled hijab are cute touches), speaking of which, I don't think the character designs are THAT bad. Sure, they're not the most sophisticated or most smoothly animated like say, Rise of the TMNT, but they're harmless enough on the eyes. Also have to give credit on the voice acting, which is mostly done by lesser known VAs of the same diverse ethnicities as many of the characters, plus more musical talents like Alex Brightman (of Beetlejuice the Musical fame) and Patrick Stump of Fallout Boy (who also did the songs for S1 E9, a good handful of which are bangers imo).
Anywho, that's my take on this series and I really quite like it. The writing is FAR from perfect and takes a few shortcuts here and there and the production values aren't the highest for a Netflix series, but some of the characters are endearing and have some pretty substantial, even relatable arcs and standout moments, the animation is decent, the designs are alright and there's still a good amount of intrigue to the story. It may fumble in a few places, but goddamnit, at least it actually TRIED, unlike certain other Netflix schlock like Big Mouth or Paradise P.D. Credit where credit's due and all that.
So yeah, 7/10 show, not a masterpiece by any means, but when I reactivated my Netflix account after getting curious about the talk, themes and even backlash it was getting online, I surprisingly enjoyed my time with it. Also, stan Norma because she's queen of Autism. Byyyyyye!

47:52 If this isn't proof enough for you that this show (like _so many_ others) was made for Twitter/Tumblr first and "kids" a _distant_ second, then frankly you _deserve_ to keep overpaying for Netflix instead of just pirating what little good content they _do_ have.
1:20:59 Well, _I_ have something, and I don't care if this ruffles feathers or if anyone even cares, so I'm gonna say it anyway:
A lot of "Progressive" writers in today's media seem to have this tendency of leaning heavily on the advice of "writing what you know" (which is why _so many_ characters nowadays, even previously established ones, end up being nothing more than the writer's self-insert), and I'm inclined to think that this is _exactly_ what the writers of this show did: they _purposely_ wrote Barney's story and character this way because it's _their own_ "lived experience", and they _unironically_ expect you to think that Barney's parents are the villains because that's what they think of _their own_ "evil and neglectful" Conservative parents and they _need_ their own shitty behavior to be vindicated by the Twitter mob to justify this blatant corporate-funded therapy project.
...I can say this so confidently because _I myself_ have been in the shoes of Barney's parents and have experienced _this exact treatment_ from a long-time friend that ended in a really bitter and painful falling-out that I fear may _never_ be mended (and that I fear _even more_ that it may have been for the best), and you _are_ right, Manga Writer: when someone you've known and cared about for _years_ suddenly changes in ways that you don't understand or even agree with, but you _still_ play by their rules and bend over backwards for them because you still care about them and want them to be happy, yet all you get for your trouble is that person _still_ treating you and talking to you like you're some kind of soulless and irredeemable monster (even going so far as to say _to your face_ that they won't even feel safe around you unless you _literally chop your own balls off_ for them), then even the most patient person is going to snap sooner or later; and even when you _still_ try to reconcile afterwards, nothing you say or do will _ever_ stop that long-time friend from simply burning that bridge if they _genuinely_ think that they're _still_ the real victim in all this...

This show/comic was written by entitled people for entitled people. Of course the "oppressed" character is ALWAYS the victim and ALWAYS in the right even if they are the biggest cunt in the cast. Most modern Western people throwing around the queer label while being chronically online are quite entitled and narcissistic, after all. THEY are the targed audience so you have to write characters just like them: obnoxious, toxic and entitled. So many cartoons pretend to be for kids but in the end they are for mentally broken man/woman children who only care about themselves and nothing else. And can we please stop refering to anything questioning these people as "bigoted"? There is nothing bigoted about calling out identity-obsessed narcissists who want the world to revolve around them, their "triggers" and their labels. The biggest bigots I have encountered are usually people from these communities, shitting on you 24/7 for the smallest reasons because their entitled ass doesn't get the attention and praise they desire. The fact that misgendering is even treated like a criminal offense in some countries now only proves how disgustingly radicalist these people truly are. Society really needs to stop catering to the 3% of society who reduce their entire existence on a bunch of labels they discovered on tumblr a few years back. Can't get more entitled than that.

Here from Cringe Panda. Have to say normally I wouldn't watch a channel like this for the sole purpose of placating a fictional character's preferred pronouns for a doubly fictional identity, but I gave leniency due to knowing Manga Writer isn't conservative and not American. Bernadette is a female. Not named Barney, not a he/him.

So a trans character can’t just be taken at their word that they are treated differently and they owe you an explanation for everything and instead all of their traumatic experiences have to be shown because it isn’t enough development to show them trying to find happiness and escape instead. Got it.

It’s hard to sympathize with a character with a lack of backstory or depth if barney were given actual depth to his backstory it probably would have made everything he said more impactful and explain why he did what he did without making him seem like a unlikable brat

So it’s bad to be vigilant against people who won’t truly stand up for you just because they accept you and care about you but don’t stand up for you because they’re conflict avoidant? That’s your first critique of Barney? Got it. Those jabs were NOT unprovoked when you factor in that conflict avoidance.

What is that "whistle" supposed to trigger, exactly? A cadre of villainous characters waiting in the wings to suddenly slither out, wringing their hands and laughing maniacally, and go make a decent show with LGBT characters...? Seems like the most self-defeating evil plan I've ever heard.
