- ABRSM 2023 & 2024 - Grade 8 Piano exam - C:2 Arabesque No. 2 ~ Claude Debussy
The French composer Claude Debussy wrote what many people regard as the most original piano music since Chopin. This Arabesque is an early piece, but we already find here the impressionist tendencies and the lightness of touch which are hallmarks of Debussy's later works. The title 'arabesque', previously used by Schumann, refers to the florid, decorative nature of the musical material.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS
ABRSM’s recommended tempo for this piece is 100 crotchet beats per minute, although stylish use of rubato would seem appropriate, given the style and genre. This piece is light-hearted in nature and fits broadly into three main sections, with sprightly, rhythmic music surrounding a more expansive mood midway through.
Light and nimble finger work is essential - particularly with those delicate reoccurring triplets of the right hand part. Good observation of crescendos and diminuendos is vital, as is detail to staccato and legato phrases. Although at Grade 8, this will seem like obvious advice, there is so much subtle detail in this piece, so it’s worth keeping in mind. For example, particular care needs to be taken when playing between bars 37-61 in order to capture all the detailed articulation, such as short slurs etc..
Use of the sustain pedal (also known as the damper pedal) is advisable in the meno mosso section at bar 82 and plays a key role in creating sonority. Be aware that although no pedal markings are written in at that point, ABRSM’s own published guidelines (Teaching Notes 2023 & 2024) suggest its use.
Elsewhere in the piece be careful if choosing to pedal, as it will need to be balanced against the need for textural clarity.
❤❤❤
Nice advice 🎉🎉
Wow that’s a long comment
I need to know where I need to put pedal. I am doing preparation for ABRSM Grade 8 Piano Performance Examination. 2023-2024.
Idk how you learn so many pieces so quickly. Youre a legend
That’s very kind of you to say… It just comes down to practice! One thing that helps is becoming good at note reading because that saves a lot of time when you can see notation on a page and straight away know how to play it. Even then, it often takes lots of time to practice something to get it right. I also used to spend lots of time trying to work out songs by ear and that’s another skill which is great to have and can save lots of time when trying to work tunes out just by listening. It took me lots of work for many years but I always enjoyed doing music so although it was challenging, I also enjoyed the process of getting better. I recently had nearly two months off from making piano videos because I was moving somewhere else and things were challenging but now many more lovely piano videos already coming, so stay tuned and good luck with all you do on the piano!

I love that piece beginning… to the end
amazing playing😄
Thanks so much! 😁🙏
should I use pedal for this piece?
yes in some areas, i just got 29/30 on this piece last week and i used to pedal in some areas, the examiner also mentioned it being successfully used in her report afterwards. make sure you don’t ignore the rests though as they are crucial to the piece, so don’t overuse the pedal either 👍🏻
All songs by Debussy (almost all) need pedal
I am 9 and starting grade 8
I don't believe you
I'm 12
And starting grade 8
I’m 13 and doing 8
I’m 11
I’m 14 and starting grade 8, it’s so much harder than grade 7 but i ought to get stuck in 😢
I’m a sophomore doing level 8 and I DEFINTELY suggest passing this as soon as possible beacuse school will be insanely stressful 😭

CCCC
Why tf is this so fast man I don wanna learn this
stick with it, just slow it down first. just got a distinction last week 29/30 on this and all i did was really slow it down first and give it a lot of time and effort and you’ll find it isn’t too bad compared to lots of the other pieces
Your the best paniest
Thank you Daniel!
