We can make a mouthpiece sound bright and dark, but the true test of a good mouthpiece, in my opinion, is to have the most beautiful, controllable sound you can. The kind of sound that people want to keep hearing for long periods of time. If you are practicing and really enjoying the sound you have, it will make your practice sessions longer, and that will contribute to your success.

Got the recommendations and watched the Jody interview on the sax school which put me in touch with Jody Jazz and their team suggest one of their mouth pieces which has worked wonders for my sound so pleased with it

I'm a beginner. I been playing a year on a yamaha 4c mouthpiece. Which jody jazz mouthpiece should I up grade to? I have a alto saxophone

Great question. Jody may have another suggestion but I often recommend the HR* to my students as a great step up mouthpiece. It’s a bit brighter than your 4c but very versatile.

Great Podcast. At first I thought Jody was going to sell his mouthpieces but he really gave general information on choosing the right mouthpiece and the difference it can make in our tone. Some great tips for everyone.

Such important information. People under estimate the value of these guidelines. They could save themselves a lot of time and money.

Very good advice. I have a Jody Jazz HR* 6 after my tenor fell again and broke my Syos Spark. Love the Jody Jazz and was recommended by another Sax school member who helps me out with my playing. I used my Jody Jazz for woodwind band but it was too bigger sound so had to Use the Yamaha 6 C which is great for it.

Great interview. Thank you. I might have missed it, but I don't think you discussed metal vs. hard rubber mouthpieces and which might be appropriate in different situations or for different players.

Great point. Jody’s take on this covered in other sessions is that the shape of the mouthpiece is more important than the material. So you can have dark sounding metal mouthpieces and bright sounding hard rubber. The better question is what kind of sound do you want, and go from there. Hope that helps.

Can I ask if some pieces are better at helping with altissimo? I know it's mostly in embochure but just wondered if some pieces were better for altissimo.

I do art work and tell people it's not the brushes or the paint, lol the more you play the better you sound.

Great Podcast, very interesting points to consider when choosing a mouthpiece. The 6 questions service is really useful. I have a Jody Jazz HR custom dark (﹟6) and couldn't be happier. The other great thing about Jody Jazz is their customer service, If you have a question you really do get to a (helpful) human being.

I will say I have a DV 8 tenor piece which plays really well as far as things go..problem is I have 2 of them and both of them leave a metallic taste in my mouth..thus I don't play them. Short of that probably just my luck. Maybe I should send them back and let Jody check them out. Don't know address to do that. But again they play great! Kind of a good and bad review..sorry for that.
