These are fun. Glad you enjoyed it !
Yes I totally agree.
had a conversation with my videographer today. What we are going to do is both. I will continue to do these "weekend vlogs" and edit them myself, and then during the week, he and I will focus on content that we can release on Wednesdays and Thursdays (more formal stuff). this way we double the output and give the people what they want! Thank you for the feedback Paul, many others expressed the same sentiments. 👊
I have VOLT landscape lighting all around my house very happy with them it’s been 7 years now and no problems yet. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND VOLT.
Ditto … a decade with Volt at two homes. No issues.
from all the research I have done it seems like they are the gold standard. I am excited to get this project moving when I get back from the Expo.
At this time I've found success in adding Organic Top Soil to those sprayed/affected areas to give the Buffalo Lawn (st.augustine) something to grow into and get those microbes attracted even more to that area also 💚
Love my Volt lighting system. I found them about 4 years ago and was skeptical. All I can say is wow, I have not had any failures in that time. I just ordered some green and red bulbs to replace my lights for the Christmas holidays. I think you will really like them.
I have some RGB spotlights that I can change colors and am installing 3 of them today as a test. Should have the video out tomorrow.
I miss this style of vlogs as well. I'm not knocking your success and/or the fact you have a cameraman now. But I subscribed several years ago for the DIY content, seeing you work in your yard like this. Also, it probably sounds dumb, but I can't mow during the winter where I live, so it was nice seeing you mow during the winter in older videos.
I took a regular Foam hand soap dispenser filled it half way with Roundup, 1/4 with foam hand soap and 1/4 with liquid KY jelly lubricant. Then added a small amount of blue marking dye. Also got a plastic lid like a coffee can lid, made one cut from the center, all the way out to the edge. Then Ill find where the Torpedo grass is coming through the St. Augustine, put the lid down on the Torpedo Grass and pull it through the cut in the lid. Then put 2 or 3 small pumps of the concoction directly on the Torpedo Grass blades and leave it overnight, Just started using the plastic lid , but it seems to be protecting the surrounding grass while still killing the Torpedo Grass. Kinda labor intensive but if you dont have a lot of Torpedo Grass its a pretty effective method of pinpoint targeting the Devils Grass and I believe will eventually rid my lawn of it 👍
I can never get used to the course stalky grass of the south, the cool season grasses look much more refined and enjoyable to work with, of course IMHO
Bermuda is probably more your style
@AlanHayne love this style of video much better....brings me back to what I love about your earlier vids when I started following you 4 years ago. PLEASE....keep this up. @AlanHayne unplugged series 🙂
I miss these videos. Your old style is much better than your current style.
The idea of the HOA sending a guy named the Lawn Care Nut a notice about his lawn being bad is just too funny to me.
Year 4 of asking the lawn care nut to come out and cut the best fescue lawn in Louisville...hope to see you out at my place to come make some content!
Did a two-transformer Volt install this past year for my DIY landscape lights. Extremely pleased with the results (lined a 200ft driveway, house, and tree lights) but I hope my wife doesn't find out how much it cost! Transformers, lights, and bulbs from Volt, 12/2 & 10/2 cable and waterproof connectors from the usual scumbags, dropped roughly ~$4k for the entire project. Lot of sweat and tears trenching and digging but I'm dominating the light game in my neighborhood.
sometimes starter Fert works with that.. but I usually just end up ripping it all out and replacing with sod and throwing starter fertilizer on them and it takes quick and greens up beautiful.. then cutting high minimum 3 inches and it crowds out anything that may pop up after that.
Looking forward to seeing the landscape lighting project. I've been looking at Volt myself and this is the next project on my list.
I liked the domination line with the applicator.
I was also wondering about the darkening of the St Aug that you briefly mentioned. I’ve been very pleased with the Greene county products and have done the double dark then the double dark+ and really had a nice dark green going against both neighbors. Then we got rain, glorious rain with big thunderstorms. The lawns around me popped dark green. They are almost identical in color. Just the natural nitrogen from the storms and 6 inches of water in 8 days. I know they will fade out fast but I understand now why. I have found once I started using a growth regulator that the dark color stays prominent when it’s cut. I’m not greeting close to the stem’s anymore as the blades don’t grow so fast. Cutting once a week now looks like I do it 2 or 3 times.
Thanks for the old style explainer vlog.
I have the same thing happening in my tttf lawn. I killed off wild Bermuda (Pylex) and had to wait to plant in the first week in October 😢 We have had little sun and very cool weather and the fescue is just barely coming up 😮
I will have to give it a spring hit early to jump start the lawn.
Looks like you have one of those new gas/electric hybrid mowers with the invisible pull cord option, Nice!! 😀
The fake pull start had me 😂😂
😂
Impressive pull action, most impressive. 😯😆
You should use a ladder stabilizer and have three rungs over the roof, too have something to hold on to when coming down.
It looks like the Nimblewill in my cool season Lawn.
Looking forward to the landscape lighting tips.
If you are at the big show, go meet the Chicanic at the show too,
More vlogs like this! You look younger yet smarter!
thanks!
Great Video Allyn. Always learning with you. I do have one question for the winter. I live in Northern VA and very soon we are going into the winter here. Can I mix left over Stress Blend and Flagship togerther as winterizer? In other words, put them both at the same time for next year? Thanks.
Hey bro. I'm not a fan of mixing ferts together like that. 2 separate apps is fine though. Just enjoy the additional exercise before winter. 😁
Hey Allyn, as a north Floridian I really appreciate the work you do. I push mowed my lawn/edged/trimmed last 3 years on my .7 acre property and followed your guidelines on good cutting and edging. However I have hired folks to take care of that part moving forward so I can focus on the turf health with proper fertilization and watering. One thing that popped on my soil test was my pH was extremely low (5.5) in my front yard. I was wondering if you plan to do a video about pH balancing your lawn and the right way to approach it. I might have missed it if you did one, but if not I bet that would be a huge help for people like me who really enjoy how you break down turf management. P.S. Looking forward to the christmas light videos you might have inspired me to do some roof lighting this year lol.
Like other commenters, I heard about Volt years ago through a family landscape architect. A very affordable, professional grade product (in a different league than the HD ones I replaced). Costco has been selling them for awhile (though slightly different than ordering directly from Volt, or they changed the design during that time frame of ordering). I prefer the original ones from Volt but nice to save $ when you can.
yeah they have a "kit" that they sell only through Costco. That's the model Costco does with a lot of stuff. Pretty cool actually.
I sure do miss this style of video
Good job Allen
Thanks for the ID on the dayflower! Now I can cross out “unidentified PITA” on my weeds list, give it a proper name and plot its death with the respect it’s earned.
it's one of the only weeds that can choke out St Aug too. Once it dies, I always have a huge hole leftover that I have to wait for it to fill in.
@@Thelawncarenut assuming the HOA will allow that time 😅
Maybe you should overseed with some common Bermuda in those bare spots. It will probably look alright.
ha ha!! good idea! then I'll have more content.😆
Always have to be on guard against the uncut man…
Truth
When are you getting more of the premium double dark green cool season seed in? And your YARD MASTERY back pack in.
The Sprayer will be back in stock in about 2 weeks. For the grass seed, we will not have more until spring of next year
We don't really get to see the ProVista in the back. Would love an update and a long term review.
Doveweed is killing me this year!
It's my arch enemy
That and buttonweed can kick rocks! I pull a lot of it when I see it. I have empire zoysia so the shorter length helps keep it in check better than you uncut guys.
Do you have any videos specific to empire zoysia grass care?
I would be nervous being the uncut man living next to you.
How do you keep everything waterproof? My circuits keep tripping when it rains
Will the herbicide work for wild Bermuda in South Texas.
it works for getting rid of bermuda in St Augustine or Zoysia in any place.
Sure. You make it look so easy. I have that string trimmer. My first one ever. I tried edging for the first time. Keep in mind I'm an older female. What a disaster. I know psycho neighbor is laughing at me. I'm having my old lawn care guy come and teach me how. That trimmer is a beast and I should have got something that isn't larger than me.
I really enjoy using this one: PowerSmart 20V MAX 12-Inch Cordless String Trimmer, 2-in-1 Weed Eater with 2.0Ah Battery & Charger (PS76112A). It's nowhere near as sturdy as the Ego String Trimmer, but it's so lightweight and easy to handle. Had mine for three years now.
@@piccodiribibi5391 I'm financially married to the IQ
You will get it ! It just takes time. I do prefer the Ego trimmers because they are lighter and nicely balanced. Which one did you get?
@@Thelawncarenut The IQ self stringing. I butchered my edge
@@harpers1niter you will get better at it - just takes time! Some people like to walk forwards, others like to walk backwards. That can make a big difference.
I guess that explains why I have so much dove weed around the perimeters of the fence and hose…..is there a better way or rule of thumb with weed whipping that will prevent it from showing up?
Edit - I used image southern lawn on dove weed. It’s slow to work but eventually destroys it. Unfortunately with the problems and disease I’ve had this year, there’s doveweeed everywhere. The Bahia that’s out back would be dirt if it was t for all the dove weed. What do you do to get it to grow back in with st Augustine?
Hi Allyn,
I live in St. Pete and have Floratam. When do you think is the best time to apply Prodiamine for winter weeds? Thank you!
right now is the perfect time. In this video I show you how to do the liquid if you want to see that: ua-cam.com/video/pXKpI1NjUFY/v-deo.html
How in the world did Bermuda invade your thick St Aug? I missed that.
everyone has it here to some degree. The area that is the worst is where I got grubs a few years ago and the. St Aug died back and allowed the bermuda to get in and it slowly took over
I'm dealing with Bermuda in my St. Aug (a two year old lawn from sod!), however I'm using Acclaim (fenoxyprop is the active ingredient, if not mistaken). It's killed (or suppressed) a good bit of the Bermuda - lots of brown, but of course stunted the St. Aug. somewhat. I think it would take two apps to really work, but I'm reluctant to do a second app due to the stunting. I'm willing to wait for spring and see if Recognition is available then. I'm curious to see how Allyn remediates the large areas where the Bermuda got nuked, as well how he resuscitates the stunted St. Aug. In my case I put down Milorganite as my first post-blackout fert app, but it's slow acting and my lawn is taking its time to recover. I'll be putting down Flagship in mid-November and just saying my prayers.
Hi, I live in Central Florida. I just put down the new St. Augustine sod. It'll be 2 weeks this Saturday coming up. I've been watering every day. A few days ago, I sprayed down RSG. Can I apply a Starter fertilizer now or wait 30 days?
yes you can apply starter fertilizer right now, it's the perfect time. You can also apply RGS again anytime you like.
@@Thelawncarenut ok, thank you!
I live in Lakeland. What would you suggest I fertilize with in November?
Right now I would suggest using this: thelawncarenut.com/collections/granular-fertilizer/products/24-0-6-flagship-with-3-iron-and-bio-nite%E2%84%A2
Hi I’m in the northeast and was wondering is it too late for double dark ? I have. A bag and haven’t threw it down yet
not too late, go for it! results just may be slow with the colder weather.
Hey Al would that stuff work for bremuda in fescue?
I do not think it is labeled for that unfortunately.
Allyn, are you still working with the racetrack and your church??
I do some stuff at the racetrack but have been really busy this summer so not as much. As far as the church I stopped because they had issues with irrigation and without water I did not want to keep applying fert.
Always the best Allyn.
Why use a string trimmer for edging and not a dedicated edger? Curious because i have both.
I was in a hurry and the string trimmer was just faster. I also need to change the blade on my edger and I'm lazy ha ha!!
@@Thelawncarenut ah, okay. Here I was thinking this was some kind of advanced technique I had to learn for next level domination!
Domination line lol. Why not hit the line with 6% Iron, (I do)
Who knew the silver bears could get the best of both worlds over by dare in saint Pete 😂😉🫶
Allyn, do you ever change yr mow patterns to minimize ruts?
Yes I sure do. I try and vary them every mow.
Have a ? Live in upstate ny want to put disease x down to help prevent snow mold over the winter when is best time to put it down?
I'm not sure on that one, sorry. It isn't a strategy I've ever employed. Maybe call Scotts and see what their recommendation is . Let me know what they say.
You are a lawn nut, lawn wars with no casualties except the weeds
How do you treat nutsedge in Bermuda?
This works slowly but does a good job thelawncarenut.com/collections/weed-control/products/halo-select-halsulfuron-brand-alternative-sedgehammer#
Will you be in Louisville for the expo this week?
Sure will. Doing a giveaway at the Earthway booth on Thursday at 1030 and 330. Hope to see you there !
Looking forward to it.
surprised they have let the “no sidewalk” go this long, esp if you have a HOA
That is something that was there before I moved in so there is no way they can force it on me now, and I'm glad of that!
Hey Allyn! Trying to kill Annual BG (Poa A.). My Mesotrione bottle says it is effective against this for PRE emergent apps but is not listed as a POST emergent kill. What in world do I do to get rid of this 💩?? Pull it up? I have all over my back yard in Utah. Oy vey. TY!
I see you’re using a EGO push mower. I remember you did a few vids awhile back and you seemed like you weren’t completely sold on it. What changed your mind?
Hey Bro - I've been using Ego all year - they are a sponsor. I love their equipment overall. The mower does fine, but the cut quality is not as good as Toro Super Recycler.
Uncut? Does it look like a snake in a turtleneck?
😂
Do you recommend true green?
not really. I am a do-it-yourselfer.
Hi 😂
I don't get on the roof
I love getting up there - when I was a kid my dad would never let me on the roof so now when I do it I feel like I'm doing something I shouldn't me ha ha!
Your color is still better than his.
You're so bad BIG uncut Al LOL
First
Just for putting Christmas lights up in October is worth unsubscribing!
Only joking, but WTF?
I'm going fully custom this year and I am not sure what snags I am going to run into. I also am now selling them on my website so I need to get the content done early enough that those interested can order.
I miss the old style. The over edited and background music is terrible imo.
