I still remember exactly how furious I was back in 1998. Even more than Diana I hated how Mulder dealt with the situation. That he never clearly chose Scully. There was barely any sign from him that could have showed Scully she didn't have to worry. Even when I watch those episodes now I get angry at him for treating Scully like this. My all-time-Mulder-lowlight 😤😉
I know your comment is a year old, but screw it lol... I totally agree. There have been times when I've found Mulder frustrating, I've found him to be insensitive, and selfish, but before the Diana arc I had never truly disliked him... but in the episode The Beginning (6x01) where Scully reminds him of what basically amounts to his love confession in his apartment hallway from Fight the Future - he more or less takes everything he said back, and then COMPARES Scully to Diana and finds Scully wanting. WHAT?!
I just thought in that moment - fuck you, asshole. I'm surprised she didn't say that to him, because that's totally what he deserved.
The only time we see Mulder realise that it's Scully who is truly the one who is there for him, truly the one to never betray him and stand by his side through everything - is in Amor Fati, when in his effed up dream-state he realises that Scully is the only one who is truly on his side, and is honest with him.
But he never apologises for what he did to Scully - he never clearly chooses her over Diana... because they effing killed Diana off - the choice is made for him.
I'd have much rather Diana lived, and Mulder choose Scully clearly.
I'll forever be grateful to David Duchovny for rewriting the end scene of Amor Fati. In the original script, Scully tells Mulder about Diana's death and Mulder tells Scully he wants to be alone, and then he sits in his apartment and cries.
W...T...F... Fucking Chris Carter, man.
David Duchovny clearly didn't like that and felt it was a betrayal of the Mulder and Scully relationship I think, because he came up with a re-write of that ending scene that thankfully they used in the aired episode. David himself wrote those lines that Mulder says to Scully about her being his constant, and his touchstone.
Scully reveals her vulnerability about Diana again, saying she's sorry for her death because she knew she was his friend - and Mulder can see this vulnerability and insecurity... and so in that moment he chooses her, he doesn't talk about Diana, he talks about the fact that when his world felt like it was falling apart she was the only one who was there for him, and he realises now she was his constant, she was his touchstone. What he doesn't explicitly say is that you are these things to me, Scully - not Diana. But the fact that this confession comes off the back of Scully mentioning Diana speaks volumes.
So yeah, we don't get it clearly stated - this is the X-Files after all, the MSR has to be SUPER VAGUE and never fully confirmed... but in the end, in his own way, Mulder does choose Scully.

Mulder was always a little selfish. Scully sacrificed everything to him. He wouldn't achieve anything without her and would be dead. He never really appreciated it. I hated him for how he treated with her, when Diana appeared. Scully would deserve a better man.
I always get angry when I remember Fowley. I've never understood why Carter created this character. Her presence spoiled several great episodes. :-(

I literally wanted to punch Mulder in the face during that time in the series. He’s always been a jerk, but he was extra-jerkish.
I don't think Chris Carter wanted a romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully so he at several points wanted to take turns which would permanently separate them or completely wipe that romantic angle away. The characters evolved because of David and Gillian's performances and their own opinions, luckily, ended up making a difference. David & Gillian were definitely in favor of a romantic angle between their characters. The little nuances in their expressions and the subtle hints they gave of feelings between Mulder and Scully were enough to create legendary chemistry and a major fan base and thats why Carter also had no choice but to basically go with that angle...anyway, his reluctance to give a romantic angle probably had a role to play with these shitty turns in the story where a clearly in love Mulder began to treat Scully this way.
My heart hurts seeing Scully hurting out of so much love for Mulder but I love seeing her jealous. It tingles !I miss em both 🤩

Rewatching season 6 now, and I still hate Diana as much as I did last time. The worst.
David recommended his friend Mimi Rogers to play Diana Fowley, but I always felt she looked a little too mature for the part. An actress closer to Gillian's age would have made a more believable Other Woman.

okay i just realized again how much i HATE diana...
...I’m getting mad all over again. This wasn’t “oh Scully is jealous.” This was Scully and Mulder clearly fucking in love and Diane comes in the picture and Mulder completely throws Scully away. I’ve been scatter watching X Files and so I had no idea who Diana was but she appeared in that second to last episode before she died and I was LIVID at Mulder because how dare you treat Scully this way and honestly I was debating on whether or not I even wanted them to end up together because he truly treated her like garbage and she ALWAYS deserved better. But this...ugh! Fantastic video! This edit is great, it made me feel feels.

All the comments totally nailing the problem - the introduction of Fowley destroyed Mulder’s character. Chris Carter was so determined to deny the romance, tho he was happy enough to exploit it for the movie, that he would write Mulder behaving in a way that no woman would tolerate. After everything Scully went through, how much trust she had in Mulder, for him to act how he acts in s6 - unforgivable. I am still a shipper to my core, but I have to pretend nothing after FTF exists, because if I do, I can’t help but come to the conclusion that Scully should have married Skinner. Chris Carter you are still not forgiven for ruining your own characters and show.
I don't understand how you can present your personal views on the characters and the show as though they are facts. It's just what you think. Other people think differently.
