If you can understand other intermediate videos, but struggle with this one I'd say it's more because of grammar and tenses rather than vocabulary. Maximiliano also talks a bit faster, but I'd say the main issue most people have with this video is the use of words like "sería", "seamos", "estaría" and a lot of past tense verbs.

Interesting topic. I agree that it seems arbitrary to ask people to apologize for the mistakes of their ancestors, but I do think there's something that should be done on this topic. It's clear that the process of colonization benefits certain nations and harm others, and that disparity is still felt today. Someone born in a country like Spain immediately has a higher chance of better quality of living than someone born in a country like Mexico. Is it the fault of the Spanish baby? of course not. But that's not the point. Should the Mexican baby bear the harm caused by history? In my humble opinion, he/she should not, and that's why there's a moral obligation for countries like Spain to genuinely help

I'm reading the auto-generated subtitles where I don't catch words, but is it possible to add subs manually , becaude they're not always so accurate, for instance "le dicen AMLO" came out as "le dicen time love"?
How much in terms of Patreon donations would that cost?

    • @DreamingSpanish
      @DreamingSpanish  4 роки тому +6

I calculate that writing subtitles would take me around 3 or 4 times as much time per video than it takes me right now to do everything, from writing to publication. I'm doubtful that at any level of donations it's going to be a worthy compromise, and I'd rather publish 3 times more videos, so that everyone can find topics they like. If the video is too hard to understand, I recommend watching easier videos that you can understand most of without subtitles.

Whether Spain acknowledges those atrocities committed under Spain's govt. is up to the current Spanish people to decide. Massive polling should be taken for a better indication of how the current people of Spain feel. However, this doesn't absolve anyone of justification of crimes committed, but simply whether the People feel they need to apologize of past crimes. In the same way, America continues to apologize for past atrocities like slavery. Just because it was acceptable back then, doesn't mean it was morally justifiable.

The only thing I find hypocritical and rubs me the wrong way. Is that Spain did apologize for kicking out the Jews. So you're okay with apologizing to a group for kicking them out, but it's beneath you to apologize to a people you invaded, exploited, ethnically cleansed, and irreversibly changed. As if there was ever any question as how Spaniards saw themselves above their colonial counterparts as being beneath them, as a lesser people that only makes it worse.

Many Mexicans are Mestizo (Spanish/Mexican) but there are also many whom are part German, Italian, and French. In Spain you can find much ethnic division as sell. Castillians, Barcelonians, Jewish, Arabic and Mediterranean Spanish Ethnicities. I think it might be too late to be demanding apologies but we should all recognize the history of what happened.
I think the most important thing for the imperial western powers (US, Spain, UK, Netherlands, etc.) is to cease the continued colonization, exploitation, and domination of other countries and peoples. The brutality of colonization from 500 years ago is perpetuated today through transnational corporate trade agreements, foreign policies of coercion and outright militarism, and what we may call epistemological imperialism, i.e., the western tendency to marginalize non-western beliefs, values, and approaches to gaining knowledge. The west continues to defile, disparage, and destroy the cultures and natural environments of those countries which were brutally colonized by the western imperial powers. The issue should not center on a spoken apology or reparation consolations, but rather first ceasing the cycles of violence, oppression, and exploitation. Then we can move on to further amends.

You gonna find out that the declive of south america actually startedw hen the spanish were expelled and the 3 viceroyalties were atomized (with the help of the british). Nueva españa was the most rich place in the world and a peasant there earned it much better than any peasant in the same period in europe...It is easy having someone to point your fingers at and say "you are guilty" but the truth is that the only reason mexico and other south american countries are like they are nowadays is actually the fact "they liberated themselves"... Until them, it was the richest part in the world, with the best infrastructures. Those places were never colonies, they were provinces. They had representation in the parlament. Do you even realize at some point, the president of the parliament in mainland spain was a guy born in what is today colombia?... Mexico DC had a modern sewer system even before european cities had it. There were 20 universities there before the anglo saxon started their first one in the north... What you have is a big complex, product of ignorance.. Good luck with that. Spain followed the roman model, it was a building empire, not one of exploitation, that is the anglo saxon model. Just as some guys from spain became roman emperors, some guys from the americas became very important figures in the spanish goverment of that time. Mexican culture is rich with Indigenous culture. Not every country has to be colonized to do well. Japan for example was isolated for a while and as far as anyone is concerned I think they're doing fine. Although I agree without the combination of Spanish culture into the indigenous culture there likely wouldn't a modern Mexican culture, to say that Spain is the best thing that happened to Mexico is an insult to the majority of Mexicans now, and the indigenous who were slaughtered in their native land over greed.

agocha, your'e truly ignorant. The ancient Aztec empire established the FIRST public university on planet Earth, had the first recycling system, created a 2 cycle calendar, were MASTERS of engineering (aqueducts, artificial islands, etc.), were medical surgeons, and were the FIRST people on the planet to require compulsory education for kids, all this while Spanish peasant kids were running around picking up cattle shit. When the Spaniards saw the ancient Aztec capital, they likened it to "the beauty and grandeur of Rome". The culture was rich, uniquely rich, BEFORE the herpes-syphilis-gonorrhea-measels-mumps-chicken pox carrying Spanish arrived. Facts. Now, go read their history, you racist moron.

Because it happened to Mexico. We can't precisely fathom how it'd be if the Spanish Empire didn't colonize it

Absolutely NOT! I like the response from the Spanish Government. There's nothing to apologise about, it was the era of discovery & colonisation.

points_2_travel so they don’t have to apologize for calling Mexican people “Savages” and forcing them to speak Spanish and forcing Catholicism onto them? Even this day indigenous Mexicans are still hurt by the fact that the Spanish language is being more preserved than their own.

They dont have to apologize, god will give them their judgment for lying on him with their fake doctrine of discovery even though the bible says you are not to impose on people in their homelands unless they accept you and you plan to assimilate to them.

@@Alecfisher01 Thank God, we got rid off Spanish language and it's not required in our country anymore.

But it was not right. Anyway, it would be better to return what was stolen from the indigenous people.
