How iFixit Became the World's Best iPhone Teardown Team

- The most important thing that happens when a new iPhone comes out is not the release of the phone, but the disassembly of it. The iPhone teardown, undertaken by third-party teams around the world, provides a roadmap for the life of the iPhone X: Is it repairable? Who made the components inside it? The answers to these questions shift stock markets, electronics design, and consumer experience.
Every year there’s a race to become the first to tear down the phone, with teams from around the world flying to Australia-where it’s first released-to compete to be the first to look inside the world’s most coveted new phone. Motherboard embedded with iFixit, a California-based company whose primary mission is to make it easier for the average person to disassemble and repair their electronics, for its iPhone X teardown.
We went inside iFixit’s office, the “headquarters of the global repair movement, which features a tool laboratory and a parts library with thousands of electronics parts and disassembly tools. Then we went to Sydney, Australia, as iFixit tried to become the first team to tear down the iPhone X.

Why move your whole business there instead of traveling there when the phones come out every year? Does it make more financial sense to move over there? Is it cheaper less taxes or something as well? Or did i miss understand and they are just going to get the phone?

you gotta love when companies put "void if removed" stickers, on items sold in the US, to try & scare people to not open devices, even though there is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which has been in place since 1975, making it a federal law, that consumers can open or repair their devices, without warranty being voided.
Companies know that people aren't gonna pursue a lawsuit to get their warranty, so that put the stickers there anyway

Man I'd be lost without iFix it. I have fixed so many laptops, desktops, and phones using their guides. They should really be considered a public service. They're like the "Haynes Car Repair Manuals" for the tech world. completely indispensable.

I love what their lead engineer said "It's not just like the monolith, its not just like this sealed black box - you open it up and there's a battery inside, just like your car, just like your watch..."
This is definitely the first thing you need to realize when you start repairing your own things, there is no magic involved almost anything can be repaired/replaced/deconstructed. Its so beautiful

Microsoft do it with the Xbox. If you want to open an Xbox 360 you either need a specialist tool or you need to have a lot of patience.
When I had an Xbox 360, I had the overheating problem with it. I contacted Microsoft thinking it was still warranty and that I could ship it off for free repair. It turns out the warranty expired by less than a week and I was informed that I could buy a new Xbox at a reduced price. I think it was £100 that they wanted.
I ended up fixing the problem myself by opening the Xbox, removing the heatsink and replacing the thermal compound, it took less than an hour and cost less than £10.
If I brought a new Xbox it would have last for a year, maybe 2 at a push. For £10 though I managed to make it last for 3 more years. It would have last longer if I didn't drop down the stairs when moving house.

I am really glad to see IFixIt to be the best company when it comes to phone tear down manuals. I repaired my Xperia ZL by watching their manuals. It was an amazing experience. It gave me a sense of fulfilment that I was able to repair my own device as an Electronics and Telecommunication Engineer. Thanks to IFixIt. All the best to you guys.

I followed an ifixit UA-cam video tutorial for how to replace the battery in my Moto X phone. Very helpful. I'm so glad people like this exist. They serve a very useful purpose.

Imagine if a car's manual was protected under a copyright and made you buy new models each year, or so, instead of having to know the issues, the features and the parts of the vehicle to learn how to fix it yourself.

And then comes the CAN bus, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and good old knowledge. It would make our lives a lot harder but it might just work only if they can see everything you do to the car.

Thats how it is for John Deere tractors, and spare parts use encryption based on serial number of tractor so you usually can't even swap parts unless they're properly programmed, which can only be done from the dealership.

The most important thing, you guys (iFixit Team) have been educated a lot of people about the stuff that they using. Not only what's inside it but also to understand how the machine working. Some people think they can't able to repair their stuff at home, i do also actually, but with all the step by step guide in iFixit, now we can do exactly what we need to do before star to repair. It's very useful information and more education on it.
Thanks to this video, I always used to think iFixit was just a tech review page. This video has taught me about their brilliant website. It's taught me that I can actually order repair kits and parts for most of the products I own at AFFORDABLE PRICES. I would spend a lot taking them to repair shops just because I never had the things required. Thank you for this incredible video!

I had to change the battery on my 6 year old iPhone 5. Where as Apple charges $70, I managed to do it by purchasing iFixit battery and battery replacements tools for under $30. Sadly my only reservation is they don't ship worldwide, so whenever I need parts, I need to bring it down through somebody. Hopefully they fix it soon.

Boss Brandon I am aware! Those are for the last two/three generations of the iPhone, not older ones. + the program you're referring is not like you just go to the Apple store to get a replacement, they still calibrate it to identify whether the battery is at fault. Only then you can get the battery replaced.
Sadly, iFixit is not to blame for the lack of worldwide shipping, it's the restrictive government regulation and customs that make shipping batteries and electronic parts a messy ordeal.

Thus Apple's decision many years ago to take chip design in-house. When they need a super-chip 12 years later, their chip engineers are ready to do it.

I love what you do. All products should be able to be repaired. I build my own computers so I can repair easily. I used your videos to replace a disk drive with an SSD, it helped a lot.

I could see how manufacturers would actually employ this team to actually do this portion of their service and maintenance side from documentation, solutions to execution as it cost quite a bit of money for this portion of a product’s R&D/manufacturing. Since they are going to do it anyways and are really reputable might as well partner and license them to do it officially.

I just went and subscribed to ifixit. I'm a huge supporter of DIY repair and electronics engineering and I completely agree and believe in ifixit's model of business. Putting the power in people's hands while making a profit. It's a win/win.

It's going to be a tough slog, particularly in the US where corruption in the form of dollars put into the reelection coffers of politicians by lobbyists, is legal. This issue is complicated, and way above the heads of just about every single politician, judge, and rank-and-file political leader, not to mention the typical citizen. Intellectual property law is way behind the times, and technology is outstripping the ability of the legislative and adjudicative processes to keep up with its advance.

cool, thank you UA-cam, I was thoroughly enjoying watching this video and then you fed a commercial right in the middle of it and all I gotta say is "wow" what an awesome job guys! thanks for the commercial!
I'm using a 5 yo Lenovo laptop and I managed to upgrade the RAM, thermal paste and even adding a second SSD by removing the DVD drive from the bay. All these were done with the help of a simple maintainance guide provided by Lenovo. I was able to buy a simple screwdriver kit (only one type of Philip screwhead was needed btw), teardown the laptop to the stage where the entire keyboard, cooling fan, and even the motherboard were removed for cleaning and new thermal paste was applied. Additional software optimisation was done and now the processor is able to playback 4K video like it would 5 years ago! RAW files can be handled by Lightroom easily and Premiere CC is also able to keep up it...
No matter how smart Manufactures are. There is always people way smarter then they are. As people want to know how things works. Then fix them or make them better! One reason manufactures are out gunned. They have a product release date to meet. The iFixit team. Is not under such restrictions.
One reason I support. The right to repair laws. It makes people smarter!

I've used Ifixit for as long as I've been using mac computers. They go through a level of detail like no other. bang bang!
To say the iphone has the most thought put into it's design out of all things we've ever created is both bizarre and completely false.

Kyle Wiens of iFixit is one of my personal heroes. I still have their Repair Manifesto on my wall. The whole first to teardown thing always struck me as a bit wankery, but the whole team has a genuine conviction about the right to repair and I commend them for that.
Mike Trieu I'm very dubious just how genuine it is. He runs a company that sells parts. The more things that you can repair the more parts they can sell. Their concern is mostly for their bottom-line, I doubt it's a genuine concern about anything else
I started disassembling my toys when i was kid, it was more fascinating than playing with them, i wanted to see how they work. Now i started to not just take apart, but assemble smartphones, all kinds of computers and seeing them turn back on it's like magic. And Ifixit is a big relief because all kinds of people come together to share knowledge from their experience. It's like the library for the tinkering geeks all over the world!
