I spoke to a former Speaker of the House in Canada. He said back in the day after work the politicians would go get food/beers with each other after work, since the job was what they had in common, they could bond over it.

He really did. I think he was massively overpromoted tbh, a decent guy but out of his depth. And frankly nobody could have saved the Tories post-Truss. The systemtic problems destroying our country started under Cameron and Osborne with austerity, and you can't wait 10 years and then suddenly solve that. Sunak couldn't solve that. Starmer won't be able to solve it in one term either. But I don't blame Sunak for what he did or hold any hatred or hostility to him for it. He was dealt a bad hand, and though he dealt it badly, it wasn't with outright malice like Boris or Truss.

I find them explaining policies and choices better than in my country (Finland) where many politicians tend to avoid taking positions in public to avoid backslash. Sunak could have done a truss and exited immediately in a petulant sulk. I'm firmly against what the tories have become, and more left of centre anyway, but have to say Sunak himself showed great quality in the way he left government, and since. He's a rich guy and could have gone off to do other things straight away but he still clearly feels responsibility of public service. We all need to be less hyper critical of our elected leaders. When everyone's as vitriolic as Jonathan Pie (whether you're left and right) , it just makes the country ungovernable, which hurts us all.
