    I believe that G-Man had a veeery good reason to rearm the nuke: The lambda reactor and portal system linked to it. Imagine that black mesa was just evacuated/ abandoned leaving that reactor basically intact. 20 years later you have the combine that is completely cut-off, desperately trying to find a way to reconnect and fight the rebels..just to find a portal system basically ready to be repaired and used for their needs...

      Gordon was never meant to close the citadel rift. He was meant for some future mission while Combine focuses on reconquering and exterminating earth, vortiguants did not allow that and took him out of the pocket reality. At the end of HL2E2 G-Man sends a message to Eli. But one thing is common between this one and the first one. Eli was always in the way of G-Man plan, Eli and Kleiner never wanted to go through with the test but were forced to. So G-Man punished them. Now that Eli is a problem again G-Man punishes him with abduction of Alyx as death is little to no punishment while shifting his plan.
      G-Man is beyond time, laws of physics and creation himself. He is everywhere(if he desires to) and nowhere at the same time.
      G-Man has only one goal to eradicate Combine, this or other way. Humanity is just one of his many cards to play.

  • @adrianaslund8605
    @adrianaslund8605 Рік тому +316

    G-Man is fascinating. The most believable theory is that he is associated with some kind of resistance towards the combine. A representative of some kind of interdimensional shadow group. And that his cadence and laboured speech is due to him not being entirely comfortable taking human form. Its a skinsuit that he has adopted. He can also move in and out of time. So whatever he is. He is powerful. Best case scenario is that his interests coincide with humanity. Even though he doesn't empathize with humanity in particular or anything. Like the elder gods from Lovecrafts mythos his interests doesn't necessarily conflict with humanity's survival and that's about it.

      A G-man is a colloquialism for a government agent, or "government man." Perhaps G-Man and his 'employers' are from a trans-dimensional galactic federation of sorts that is trying to either destroy or contain the Combine, a rogue slaver empire. Or, as suggested by the popular fan theory, he is a metamorphosed Shu'ulathoi that's pissed off at the Combine for enslaving his brethren and is working with an unknown group to topple the Combine, for revenge. Either way he sees the indomitable human spirit as a tool. A weapon, to point straight at the Combine.

    Very well put together. In the big picture, the Black Mesa fight was a turf battle between different factions that were manipulated into it and in the end, none of them really won anything. Just the GMan and ultimately the Combine who came and seized everything from everyone.

    I've always felt Half-Life was like playing a big game of Stellaris but from a first person perspective. The G-man just represents some unknown alien civ, using the Earth to gain control of Xen. They're clearly rivals to the Combine, as shown in the sequel. But Earth and humanity is just a pawn in both of their wars, like we're nothing but a pre-warp civ they've both stumbled across and are fighting over.

    The G-Man is from the future. His strange speech and mannerisms indicate that he is from a different society. He was sent back in time to make sure that events follow the proper order. If you look at his actions you will see that he is monitoring the situation and adjusting the events in order to maintain the timeline he is interested in preserving. When Gordon confronts the G-Man at the end of Half-Life, he puts Gordon into time suspension. It is implied that no time has passed for Gordon in Half-Life 2. It is also significant that the G-Man talks about time: the wrong man at the right time. In other words, Gordon was a man in the wrong time but brought back at the proper moment in the timeline in order to preserve the timeline that the G-Man is trying to preserve.

    • @KaiserMattTygore927

      I see where this theory is coming from but tbh I think its less “everything is all because time travel” and more just he has the ability to time travel and does so freely to achieve certain goals, I also think it kinda falls flat with the ending of half life alyx, where he changes a big part of the timeline that has already taken place, which would probably mess up the timeline even more (though I guess that could also be used to add proof to this as a theory, but eh), I also dont think valve would make a character as mysterious and enticing as gman just for his motivation to be fixing up some time travel shenanigans, though that would be funny

    The G-man is definitely an inter dimensional being that is without question, but he is also mortal in that less then a dozen Vortigaunts can stop him for a good period of time and that he can be imprisoned by the combine, that or he simply lets it happen to his benefit, he has the ability to put people in a metaphysical stasis with him giving people the allusion of choice

  • @Peluceus
    @Peluceus Рік тому +3

    My headcanon is that Barney and Sheperd were used as a sort of way to navigate / resolve / calculate a butterfly effect system - they as a person don't REALLY have any big part in the grand scheme of things but they acted as the most replaceable pawns in key moments, causing some very inconsequential things to happen that end up being absolutely consequential. Like, if Barney wasn't shouting about how he's going to pull Gordon out of the malfuctioning teleporter, Kleiner may have had a moment to think and shut down the system before Breen could that see it is, in fact, Gordon Freeman - which impacts Breen's (and the combine's) response in some way that ends up working in the favor of Resistance/Gordon/Gman/Employers. Or having Adrian get promoted up and deployed replaces the one soldier that actually would have caught up to Gordon and killed him as he teleported to Xen.

    Really enjoy your videos dude. Half life was my first favourite game as a kid and what had me hooked as a gamer ever since. But I could never truly grasp or piece together the entire story beyond a surface level if you get me. These lore videos are really really good!
    I personally accept all the recognised spin off games and laidlaws writings are canon since as a fan I want a fuller more completely story to be presented. Otherwise you’re just intentionally keeping the game franchises story vague.

    I think all earth based levels should be in the original Half Life, but all Xen based levels should be in Black Mesa. This is because the Xen levels in the original failed to capture what Valve intended them to capture. But because we don't have to worry about 20GB HDs, and 64MB of VRAM anymore, we now have Black Mesa, which in my opinion captures what Valve intended the Xen based levels in Half Life to be like. But that's just my opinion, and i'm open to feedback!

    You know, the theory you explained in this video about Gman kinda fits the bill. He could be one of the Aliens disguised as a Human who infiltrated the government and to set the entire plan in motion to cause the resonance cascade so that the Vortigaunts can escape Xen. He could possibly be under the control of the Vortigaunts and part of their plan to escape from being under the control of the Nihilanth, and where better to do it with Humans already teleporting to and from to Xen and Earth.

    • @SSD_Penumbra
      @SSD_Penumbra Рік тому +1

      You say that, but he seems to not like the vortigaunts. He looks visably pissed when they freeze the explosion at the end of HL2 and even ends it with "We'll see about that."
      That being said, he's no fan of the Combine either, actively helping Gordon in a roundabout sort of way.
      My personal theory is that he's Gordon himself. He's a Gordon variant who got stuck in time and became omniscient, sending himself backwards in time to undo his mistakes but knows things have to play out in a certain way. Think Dr Strange in the MCU telling Iron Man that they have ONE reality where they beat Thanos, but it has to play out the way it does for that reality to actually happen.

    One detail ive always liked is while not seeming as such, Gordon actually stops the resonance cascade in on a rail. Notice how after that point the random zen enemies rarely teleport in and the Vortiguants and Alien Grunts teleport in much more strategic places and more often. This is because the Nilihanth has taken control of the portal and is only sending his own forces now. Without him it cannot possibly stay open or send anything at all. Also at a certian point in opposing force Race X just replaces the Xen creatures because Gordon killed the Nilihanth and the portal is indeed closed.

    G-Man only appears briefly in '-Blue Shift' and '-Decay' so I'm not sure he considered Barney Calhoun, Colette Green and Gina Cross important players since he didn't feel driven to keep an eye on them. And like I commented in a previous video I'm not sure Gordon Freeman initially was either. I've wondered if by the G-Man's original plan the roles of Calhoun, Green, Cross and even Freeman could have ended as far as he was concerned after the resonance cascade. His advanced interest in Adrian Shephard and his unit suggest to me that there role may have intended to have been something different than what ultimately played out and it remains a possibility that the HECU to be the implementation of Nihilanth's downfall. It didn't happen that way and as you said, G-Man adapted things as was necessary to see his plan through. But I'm not so sure Shephard's stand against RaceX and the Gene Worm was calculated by G-Man; my guess is that's more what the nuke was for. "Maybe" G-Man rescued Shephard from the rising toxic waste and blocked his departure on the Osprey because he still had hopes of him eliminating Nihilanth; only for him to be beaten to it by Freeman. Now you could argue that if that's the case there would have been no reason for him to rescue Shephard afterwards from the waste dump but "maybe" Shephard had impressed G-Man enough that he gave him a further reprieve and later chose to put him into stasis for the same reason. As for the events of '-Blue Shift' and '-Decay', my thought is that G-Man neither helped nor aided the struggles of Calhoun, Green and Cross because he didn't consider them important to his plan. I could be wrong. My theory isn't perfect either but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Hit me with your thoughts; I'm open to suggestions and criticism.

    I think G-man was more hands on during the Black Mesa incident but in subtle ways, like locking a door so personnel got trapped and died on the other side from a Bullsquid or something alike, because had they lived they might have interfered with one of the protagonists and taken them off the path G-man wanted them to be on so they could achieve what he had planned for them.
    We know he teleports and can slow time, what's to say when he enters a portal he isn't off in a dimension where time moves extremely fast, relative to earth, working on calculations to predict possible outcomes of events and personnel.
    Because every time we see that guy he's either near broken equipment/systems then just walks away, a potential exit that is locked or just out of reach forcing you to go a certain way, or jsut before a major engagement watching you. And he's never rushed just calm and cool....like he has all the time in the world.

    It is legitimately frustrating that there won't be a HL3. Like seriously, just finish the damn story. If Final Fantasy VII can get a full remake there shouldn't be anything keeping a brand new game from being made. And it's not like it wouldn't sell freaking millions in the first damn week.

    I believe Valve will release Half-Life 3 in 2025. Because we don't know in which year of the 2000s Half-Life 1 happened. But Half-Life Alex was released in 2020, 5 years before the events of episode two, also 15 years after Half-Life 1. Maybe they want to release a game which is taking place in our year. Valve has its Source 2 engine now. So? 2020+5= 2025 or in the Half-Life world 2005 + 20= 2025. And Half-Life 2 took place about 20 years after the events of Half-Life 1. Just a theory.
