Whilst kill counts are just fun entertainment, the story of how each protagonist got to survive is just outstanding… video such as this are a superb addition to what I love about Half Life. Looking forward to more content, and more games for me to kill count!!!
My headcanon is that Barney and Sheperd were used as a sort of way to navigate / resolve / calculate a butterfly effect system - they as a person don't REALLY have any big part in the grand scheme of things but they acted as the most replaceable pawns in key moments, causing some very inconsequential things to happen that end up being absolutely consequential. Like, if Barney wasn't shouting about how he's going to pull Gordon out of the malfuctioning teleporter, Kleiner may have had a moment to think and shut down the system before Breen could that see it is, in fact, Gordon Freeman - which impacts Breen's (and the combine's) response in some way that ends up working in the favor of Resistance/Gordon/Gman/Employers. Or having Adrian get promoted up and deployed replaces the one soldier that actually would have caught up to Gordon and killed him as he teleported to Xen.
good video, very nostalgic and makes nice use of the new mod assets for the background shots. i played all 3 of the expansion packs for hl. remember when they had expansion packs that were like new standalone games? those were the days. i never delved deep into the lore, but this video makes sense of all the events very nicely
Videos like this is why I come here. Wonderful video, extremely well thought out and put together. Thank you for your great high quality longform deep dives.
Realky cool and intricate video, Skyrionn! It gives some new helpful lore to Half Life. Now, if possible, we need to discuss the events of the 7 Hour War and the Combine subjugation of Earth.
i always like the way you structure and narrate your videos and even though ive played these games multiple time i always enjoy hearing about these event. would love to hear u breakdown Mark Laidlaw's "Nihilanth" and other writings. ❤
The whole Valve Gaming Universe can just be bogged down to a petty squabble between two warring factions of extra-dimensional beings with the human race being unfortunately caught up in the middle being used as pawns in a much larger game to completely control all of reality & the human race was unfortunately completely wiped out as a result..
Thank you for yet another awesome half life video❤ the amount of detail you are able to present in these videos are on a completely different level, amazing job as always! ps. any plans on doing a g-man lore in the future? would love to see how much onfo you can dig up on one of the most secretive chatacters in all of gaming :D
Half Life can't be any earlier than 2007, as that's when the V-22 officially entered service. Granted it was in development since 1989 but it had a lot of hurdles to overcome to be ready for deployment.
But considering the CRT monitors everywhere, I wouldn't say it was further beyond 2007 either. Tho I know in real life some government offices are still using windows XP, I would be surprised a state of the art facility such as Black Mesa would have kept CRT monitors for long.
These videos are absolutely brilliant! Very well written, talented narration, and superb editing skills. I can’t overstate how good these are, and the cherry on top is learning details of this Half Life universe I never knew. Outstanding! 🖖😀
As a chemist, the idea that a sample that is both larger and more pure than any inherent needing MORE power for good resolution is hilarious. If something is pure, it'll give you data way easier
As a theoretical physicist youre just straight up in the wrong here bloke. Xenian crystal samples, being from a different dimension, have unique physical and chemical properties which diverge heavily from any known material from our universe. Bit of a diddly move mate next time keep your yap shut and perhaps you wont embarrass yourself!
Escapism gamer here & also lore-lover to the bone: I did realised how more deep the lore is, even in the first minutes of this documentation we see & hear that the first contact with Xen made accidently within a team in Black Mesa. The idea is... How much was that an accident? You know what i mean. This is so freaking intense for me, even the whole lore is about fiction can sure top any real wikileaks story 😃 Imagine having such Black Mesa documents somewhere! After Half-Life Alyx few stuff are getting more & more suspect and the Combine. That was planned man, no accidents at all!! Even in politics irl stuff happen in same way cause some dude need to climb up the cooporate lader, earn more money or try to push everyone else his/her own cultural idea / lifestyle. Why not in Half-Life?
My headcanon has always been that G-Man's employers wanted to use humanity (due to our ingeneuity and tenacity) as a distraction to occupy the combine, to destabilize them so that they (the employers) could defeat them.
The impression I got from HL1 was that the G man and his employers intended to hijack the resonance cascade. But after seeing g man arm the nuke, I'm having doubts and think he is pulling the strings
You would think that after all this, that the G-Man and his "EMPLOYERS" would be aware and have plans for Aperture Science as they are transcended beings and should know about Black Mesa's (former) competitors. Apparently in a deleted-scene before Wheatley was called "Wheatley" the G-Man was supposed to be indirectly mentioned by him and say "Hey a man with a briefcase was just here to see you." Do any of you think that G-Man would offering Chell "employment" after making it to the surface after it cuts to black?
anyone else thinks that Gman speaks like a Nihilanth who just "is better in the language" then the "Endboss" on Xen ? I think even parts of the speech that Nihilanth gives out would be logical to this theory. Especially the weird pauses, word lengthening and general speech pattern - thats a thing what ALWAYS BOTHERED me. Btw - just found you, thanks for your very interresting and well researched Videos! Instasub!
This game still amuses me to this day It came out exactly a month after i was born and it's the first game I remembered playing (i was 3 yo and was thinking i opened a portal to real life so i unplugged the pc that's my only memory lol) I'm 25 now i lost count how many times I've beaten the whole series and still every time i discover more lore about it
Noticed this a few time but I’ve been subscribing over and over. Not sure if it’s a problem on my end but my subscription to you keep getting undone. Love the content hate missing it.
I still think that it's possible that Gman and his employers knew that humanity was the only one to possibly topple the combine empire. If so, then it's probably another kind of empire that can't go toe to toe with the combine, at least in a standing war.
I think GMan's faction has power beyond the Combine's. So much so that GMan is simply helping them play dice with entire civilizations. I mean, the combines can't teleport, yet GMan can do that + time travel & change timeline events. That's a whole different level.
@@pedrofernandes4148 I think alyx made gman too powerful. As if he can do all of that, how was he blocked by a few vortigaunts? Are they that strong? Then how were they enslaved twice? Too many plotholes
@@umadbroimatroll7918 The Vortessence is powerful, but it's not meant to be used for war and it wont help you much against a universal sized empire with highly advanced tech and weapons in a direct fight if all you can do with it is just shoot a beam of energy. The Nihilanth's mind is much more powerful than that of the Vortigaunt's and could easily overpower them (It was able to keep a whole rift in reality open just by thought alone, even after an attempt to close it from the earth side).
I love the video. Good job. Half-Life 3 concept: It follows on from Alyx’s ending, Gordon and Eli manage to get access to Adrian’s stasis dimension, free him to help them find Alyx and the G-Man once and for all.
skyronn don't change the style of making your videos because they are too good, another great video. for me the best youtuber dealing with half life and portal or various games🙏👍
I think all earth based levels should be in the original Half Life, but all Xen based levels should be in Black Mesa. This is because the Xen levels in the original failed to capture what Valve intended them to capture. But because we don't have to worry about 20GB HDs, and 64MB of VRAM anymore, we now have Black Mesa, which in my opinion captures what Valve intended the Xen based levels in Half Life to be like. But that's just my opinion, and i'm open to feedback!
Really enjoy your videos dude. Half life was my first favourite game as a kid and what had me hooked as a gamer ever since. But I could never truly grasp or piece together the entire story beyond a surface level if you get me. These lore videos are really really good! I personally accept all the recognised spin off games and laidlaws writings are canon since as a fan I want a fuller more completely story to be presented. Otherwise you’re just intentionally keeping the game franchises story vague.
One detail ive always liked is while not seeming as such, Gordon actually stops the resonance cascade in on a rail. Notice how after that point the random zen enemies rarely teleport in and the Vortiguants and Alien Grunts teleport in much more strategic places and more often. This is because the Nilihanth has taken control of the portal and is only sending his own forces now. Without him it cannot possibly stay open or send anything at all. Also at a certian point in opposing force Race X just replaces the Xen creatures because Gordon killed the Nilihanth and the portal is indeed closed.
Dont take it the wrong way but I listen this before sleep. It fires up the imagination really good, and yet the voice is so relaxing. Keep doing that!!!! You helped me a lot!
You know, the theory you explained in this video about Gman kinda fits the bill. He could be one of the Aliens disguised as a Human who infiltrated the government and to set the entire plan in motion to cause the resonance cascade so that the Vortigaunts can escape Xen. He could possibly be under the control of the Vortigaunts and part of their plan to escape from being under the control of the Nihilanth, and where better to do it with Humans already teleporting to and from to Xen and Earth.
You say that, but he seems to not like the vortigaunts. He looks visably pissed when they freeze the explosion at the end of HL2 and even ends it with "We'll see about that." That being said, he's no fan of the Combine either, actively helping Gordon in a roundabout sort of way. My personal theory is that he's Gordon himself. He's a Gordon variant who got stuck in time and became omniscient, sending himself backwards in time to undo his mistakes but knows things have to play out in a certain way. Think Dr Strange in the MCU telling Iron Man that they have ONE reality where they beat Thanos, but it has to play out the way it does for that reality to actually happen.
The most deppressing is the Magnusson's microwave casserole that blew up because a certain "Highly trained proffesional" Was trolling or just can't use a microwave
I always feel like the Gman and the powers that “be” didn’t expect someone like Freeman. All their planning and forethought and they could not expect someone like Freeman to be such a unstoppable force. I always felt they were like who the fuck is this guy 😂.
I have a theory that idk if it's been thought before and gets complicated and doesn't really work if multiverse is viable but: The gman has seeming powers of time and space control. What if he and his employers want to make sure the events of black mesa and the rest of half life happen to ensure that the technology for such feats is discovered (be it by the technology itself making it possible or by forcing an evolutionary adaptation), meaning the gman and his employers are actually beings that came to be in what we'd consider "the future"?
It is legitimately frustrating that there won't be a HL3. Like seriously, just finish the damn story. If Final Fantasy VII can get a full remake there shouldn't be anything keeping a brand new game from being made. And it's not like it wouldn't sell freaking millions in the first damn week.
*G-man:* get this largest and purest sample of a crystal only found in another dimention (don't ask any questions) *Black Mesa personal:* wow, that's convenient
I think G-man was more hands on during the Black Mesa incident but in subtle ways, like locking a door so personnel got trapped and died on the other side from a Bullsquid or something alike, because had they lived they might have interfered with one of the protagonists and taken them off the path G-man wanted them to be on so they could achieve what he had planned for them. We know he teleports and can slow time, what's to say when he enters a portal he isn't off in a dimension where time moves extremely fast, relative to earth, working on calculations to predict possible outcomes of events and personnel. Because every time we see that guy he's either near broken equipment/systems then just walks away, a potential exit that is locked or just out of reach forcing you to go a certain way, or jsut before a major engagement watching you. And he's never rushed just calm and cool....like he has all the time in the world.

Need to play Black Mesa again. Love these long videos with deep dives. Great job!
good video, very nostalgic and makes nice use of the new mod assets for the background shots. i played all 3 of the expansion packs for hl. remember when they had expansion packs that were like new standalone games? those were the days. i never delved deep into the lore, but this video makes sense of all the events very nicely
Oh that's one I'm excited to cover!
i always like the way you structure and narrate your videos and even though ive played these games multiple time i always enjoy hearing about these event.
would love to hear u breakdown Mark Laidlaw's "Nihilanth" and other writings. ❤
this video feels like watching a documentary, great work!!
Wonderful. Love half life lore videos, this is one of the best ive seen!
Thank you!
these videos are so cool i never dont find myself insanely interested in this type of videos. keep up the good work!!
Thanks for the kind comment! I appreciate it! I do have a plan for G-Man but it won't be until the end of the year. It'll be a great one to research!
@Skyrionn sounds great! I'm looking forward to it :D
Half Life can't be any earlier than 2007, as that's when the V-22 officially entered service. Granted it was in development since 1989 but it had a lot of hurdles to overcome to be ready for deployment.
yeah that's what I was saying aswell
But considering the CRT monitors everywhere, I wouldn't say it was further beyond 2007 either. Tho I know in real life some government offices are still using windows XP, I would be surprised a state of the art facility such as Black Mesa would have kept CRT monitors for long.
If the devs of Half life knew what it was since 2000 then consider the official deployment date irrelevant.
The Seven Hours War happened on January the 2nd 2001. How the hell the Black Mesa incident could happen not before 2007 ?
💯💯💯 Another perfect video. You explained everything in detail clearly. I wish my college professors were as good as you in terms of explaining things!
These videos are absolutely brilliant! Very well written, talented narration, and superb editing skills. I can’t overstate how good these are, and the cherry on top is learning details of this Half Life universe I never knew. Outstanding! 🖖😀
Interesting how the Gman was at Black Mesa and the military base at the same time.
Time isn’t much of any issue for G Man
He has... abilities.
Such great work on the graphics - must have taken ages! Well done - so professional!
As a chemist, the idea that a sample that is both larger and more pure than any inherent needing MORE power for good resolution is hilarious. If something is pure, it'll give you data way easier
amen! still though a such great game and lore
To be fair, the crystals were some kind of exotic matter and didn't follow normal baryonic rules.
I can attest - a fair few aliens died at the hands of Calhoun, Shepherd and Freeman across the games alone!
Fantastic video!!!
I’d like to think this all happened on May 16th 2005 making this the worst Monday in history.
5 things the G-Man doesn’t want you to know!
5 G-Man in your location
The fact that in one of the multiverses, Cave Johnson prevents the Black Mesa incident.
100%
you are one of my favourite lore youtubers
You're too kind :)
Escapism gamer here & also lore-lover to the bone:
I did realised how more deep the lore is, even in the first minutes of this documentation we see & hear that the first contact with Xen made accidently within a team in Black Mesa.
The idea is... How much was that an accident? You know what i mean.
This is so freaking intense for me, even the whole lore is about fiction can sure top any real wikileaks story 😃
Imagine having such Black Mesa documents somewhere!
37:26 This is the first time I've seen someone say "dislike it" lol. Take my subscription! 🙂
My headcanon has always been that G-Man's employers wanted to use humanity (due to our ingeneuity and tenacity) as a distraction to occupy the combine, to destabilize them so that they (the employers) could defeat them.
Bro the Earth is only just a piece of dust in the network of the combine occupied worlds
@David56740 sure, but it's nice to feel special.
Great video. Definitely adds to the overall mystery around it all.
Another entertaining lore vid. Thanks Skyrionn!
anyone else thinks that Gman speaks like a Nihilanth who just "is better in the language" then the "Endboss" on Xen ?
I think even parts of the speech that Nihilanth gives out would be logical to this theory.
Especially the weird pauses, word lengthening and general speech pattern - thats a thing what ALWAYS BOTHERED me.
Btw - just found you, thanks for your very interresting and well researched Videos! Instasub!
I mean Gabe said in the 25 anniversary of half-life documentary. That he wanted a cigarette man a final villain
This game still amuses me to this day
It came out exactly a month after i was born and it's the first game I remembered playing (i was 3 yo and was thinking i opened a portal to real life so i unplugged the pc that's my only memory lol)
I'm 25 now i lost count how many times I've beaten the whole series and still every time i discover more lore about it
Man your editing of the video is great.
Man your so good at these lore stuff keep it up
Noticed this a few time but I’ve been subscribing over and over. Not sure if it’s a problem on my end but my subscription to you keep getting undone. Love the content hate missing it.
That's odd! I appreciate you coming back and searching manually for the channel!
i love your videos! i am extremely fond of the half life and portal universe. i always put your videos on when im drawing :)
Fantastic work as usual, your passion shows, I cant wait for your videos.
Great video again. You have a gift with words and stories. Good luck with new projects.
Why would it happen in may, all of the original calendar textures I saw in half life one were all on December.
Thank you!
I just can't get bored of your Valve content videos.
The only thing - G-man is the character's name in the game files. There are no mentions of his name or nickname inside the universe
I think he's been mentioned by the developers since release. And of course the community has taken hold of it!
@@Skyrionn much love meow meow)
He's called G-man in Shepard's journal in the manual for Opossing Force.
@@animekid9000 Doesn't change the fact his real name is unknown for all the BM facility. Thanks for the info anyway :)
Love the video, thanks for making it.
He looks visably pissed when they freeze the explosion at the end of HL2 and even ends it with "We'll see about that."
That being said, he's no fan of the Combine either, actively helping Gordon in a roundabout sort of way.
Thanks 4 all the hard work.
I appreciate the kind words :)
Incredible video Sky! Love these long form vids
Thank you! This was a tough one to put together but it seems to have worked out well!
This gave me a different view on the resonance cascade
Great video
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
The most deppressing is the Magnusson's microwave casserole that blew up because a certain "Highly trained proffesional" Was trolling or just can't use a microwave
I just vinge watched all your half life videos. Subbed keep it up mate
Good video! Btw Is there a video on Entropy Zeros lore in planning?
Enjoyed this greatly. Thanks for the hard work.
Great video as usual my friend. ❤❤❤❤ Thank you so much
Thanks bud!
I subbed about two weeks ago, since then I have watched every Half Life video (and some other ones also).
Woah, that's dedication! I appreciate you!
@@Skyrionn No problem! Your channel is amazing!
I always feel like the Gman and the powers that “be” didn’t expect someone like Freeman. All their planning and forethought and they could not expect someone like Freeman to be such a unstoppable force. I always felt they were like who the fuck is this guy 😂.
just some neurotic asshole who was late to work on the most important day in human history
Great video! I like how the origins, identity and motivations of the Gman and his employers is left open ended for fan theories and speculation.
07:20 What is this soundtrack you use a lot in your half life videos? I didn’t find that one in the description unfortunately 😮
6:42 The G in G-man stands for "Goverment?" I didn't know until now. I learned something new from this video.
i love this sort of video please never stop making this good videos :)
I find it fascinating how G-man and his employers are able to make intellectual moves to get what they want... THIS IS ANOTHER LEVEL
They're playing 4D chess while everyone else is just trying to stay alive.
There's really no plot like the Half Life one.
Great video for one of the greatest sci-fi stories in video game history.
Thanks for watching it!
TF2 does have a pretty great timeline and story. I will explore it properly one day!
31:07
I just realized the G Man's Employers are, the Universal Order; The Combine.
I have a theory that idk if it's been thought before and gets complicated and doesn't really work if multiverse is viable but:
The gman has seeming powers of time and space control.
Impressive work Mr Skyrionn. i will see you up ahead.
I don’t know what draws me to this type of stuff but there’s something here that just makes me feel like me
It is legitimately frustrating that there won't be a HL3. Like seriously, just finish the damn story. If Final Fantasy VII can get a full remake there shouldn't be anything keeping a brand new game from being made. And it's not like it wouldn't sell freaking millions in the first damn week.
hl3 is literally being made bloke are you bloody daft
100%
When I first played HalfLife, I have no idea what i am doing.. but after playing Black Mesa, the whole story was unfold for me..
thanks for the video, super sick!!!
*G-man:* get this largest and purest sample of a crystal only found in another dimention (don't ask any questions)
*Black Mesa personal:* wow, that's convenient
The black Mesa incident occurred on December 5, 2000. Not may 6, 200-
And there, in school, we were taught to beware of "the ides of March", yet it were the "ides of May" that brought the desaster
Imagine owning this IP, and the only thing you’ve done with it in 15 years is release a VR game.
finally...i have been waiting forever to see a legit documentary about what actually happened
Nothing will ever match the atmosphere created by both half life games and their expansions. its just stellar.
Greek bro true but not based Constantinople ;(
Insanely good work
I think G-man was more hands on during the Black Mesa incident but in subtle ways, like locking a door so personnel got trapped and died on the other side from a Bullsquid or something alike, because had they lived they might have interfered with one of the protagonists and taken them off the path G-man wanted them to be on so they could achieve what he had planned for them.
